1 Corinthians 10 [NASB:NIV]

  1. For I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that our fathers were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea;
  2. and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
  3. and all ate the same spiritual food;
  4. and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.
  5. Nevertheless, with most of them God was not well-pleased; for they were laid low in the wilderness.
  1. For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea.
  2. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.
  3. They all ate the same spiritual food
  4. and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.
  5. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert.

  1. Now these things happened as examples for us, so that we would not crave evil things as they also craved.
  2. Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, "THE PEOPLE SAT DOWN TO EAT AND DRINK, AND STOOD UP TO PLAY."
  3. Nor let us act immorally, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day.
  4. Nor let us try the Lord, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the serpents.
  5. Nor grumble, as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer.
  1. Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.
  2. Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: "The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in pagan revelry."
  3. We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did--and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.
  4. We should not test the Lord, as some of them did--and were killed by snakes.
  5. And do not grumble, as some of them did--and were killed by the destroying angel.

  1. Now these things happened to them as an example, and they were written for our instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
  2. Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.
  3. No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.
  4. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
  5. I speak as to wise men; you judge what I say.
  1. These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come.
  2. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!
  3. No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
  4. Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.
  5. I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.

  1. Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ?
  2. Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread.
  3. Look at the nation Israel; are not those who eat the sacrifices sharers in the altar?
  4. What do I mean then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything?
  5. No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers in demons.
  1. Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?
  2. Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.
  3. Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?
  4. Do I mean then that a sacrifice offered to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?
  5. No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons.

  1. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.
  2. Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not stronger than He, are we?
  3. All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable All things are lawful, but not all things edify.
  4. Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor.
  5. Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions for conscience' sake;
  1. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord's table and the table of demons.
  2. Are we trying to arouse the Lord's jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
  3. "Everything is permissible"--but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"--but not everything is constructive.
  4. Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.
  5. Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,

  1. FOR THE EARTH IS THE LORD'S, AND ALL IT CONTAINS.
  2. If one of the unbelievers invites you and you want to go, eat anything that is set before you without asking questions for conscience' sake.
  3. But if anyone says to you, "This is meat sacrificed to idols," do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for conscience' sake;
  4. I mean not your own conscience, but the other man's; for why is my freedom judged by another's conscience?
  5. If I partake with thankfulness, why am I slandered concerning that for which I give thanks?
  1. for, "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it."
  2. If some unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience.
  3. But if anyone says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, both for the sake of the man who told you and for conscience' sake--
  4. the other man's conscience, I mean, not yours. For why should my freedom be judged by another's conscience?
  5. If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?

  1. Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
  2. Give no offense either to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God;
  3. just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit but the profit of the many, so that they may be saved.
  1. So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
  2. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God--
  3. even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.
