Matthew 14 [NIV:NASB]

  1. At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,
  2. and he said to his attendants, "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him."
  3. Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife,
  4. for John had been saying to him: "It is not lawful for you to have her."
  5. Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered him a prophet.
  1. At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the news about Jesus,
  2. and said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him."
  3. For when Herod had John arrested, he bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip.
  4. For John had been saying to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."
  5. Although Herod wanted to put him to death, he feared the crowd, because they regarded John as a prophet.

  1. On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for them and pleased Herod so much
  2. that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
  3. Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."
  4. The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted
  5. and had John beheaded in the prison.
  1. But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod,
  2. so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
  3. Having been prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."
  4. Although he was grieved, the king commanded it to be given because of his oaths, and because of his dinner guests.
  5. He sent and had John beheaded in the prison.

  1. His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother.
  2. John's disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
  3. When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.
  4. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
  5. As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food."
  1. And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
  2. His disciples came and took away the body and buried it; and they went and reported to Jesus.
  3. Now when Jesus heard about John, He withdrew from there in a boat to a secluded place by Himself; and when the people heard of this, they followed Him on foot from the cities.
  4. When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick.
  5. When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, "This place is desolate and the hour is already late; so send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves."

  1. Jesus replied, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat."
  2. "We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish," they answered.
  3. "Bring them here to me," he said.
  4. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
  5. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
  1. But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!"
  2. They said to Him, "We have here only five loaves and two fish."
  3. And He said, "Bring them here to Me."
  4. Ordering the people to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds,
  5. and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets.

  1. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
  2. Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.
  3. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone,
  4. but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
  5. During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
  1. There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.
  2. Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away.
  3. After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone.
  4. But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary.
  5. And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea.

  1. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.
  2. But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
  3. "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."
  4. "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
  5. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"
  1. When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out in fear.
  2. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid."
  3. Peter said to Him, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water."
  4. And He said, "Come!" And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus.
  5. But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!"

  1. Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"
  2. And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.
  3. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
  4. When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.
  5. And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him
  1. Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"
  2. When they got into the boat, the wind stopped.
  3. And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, "You are certainly God's Son!"
  4. When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.
  5. And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent word into all that surrounding district and brought to Him all who were sick;

  1. and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.
  1. and they implored Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched it were cured.
