Matthew 17 [NIV:NASB]

  1. After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
  2. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.
  3. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
  4. Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."
  5. While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"
  1. Six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves.
  2. And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light.
  3. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.
  4. Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, I will make three tabernacles here, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
  5. While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, "This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!"

  1. When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified.
  2. But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid."
  3. When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
  4. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, "Don't tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."
  5. The disciples asked him, "Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?"
  1. When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground and were terrified.
  2. And Jesus came to them and touched them and said, "Get up, and do not be afraid."
  3. And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus Himself alone.
  4. As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, "Tell the vision to no one until the Son of Man has risen from the dead."
  5. And His disciples asked Him, "Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"

  1. Jesus replied, "To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things.
  2. But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands."
  3. Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.
  4. When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him.
  5. "Lord, have mercy on my son," he said. "He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.
  1. And He answered and said, "Elijah is coming and will restore all things;
  2. but I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wished. So also the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands."
  3. Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist.
  4. When they came to the crowd, a man came up to Jesus, falling on his knees before Him and saying,
  5. "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is a lunatic and is very ill; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water.

  1. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him."
  2. "O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me."
  3. Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.
  4. Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"
  5. He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."
  1. "I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not cure him."
  2. And Jesus answered and said, "You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him here to Me."
  3. And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured at once.
  4. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not drive it out?"
  5. And He said to them, "Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.

  1. When they came together in Galilee, he said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.
  2. They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life." And the disciples were filled with grief.
  3. After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, "Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax?"
  4. "Yes, he does," he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. "What do you think, Simon?" he asked. "From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes--from their own sons or from others?"
  1. ["But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."]
  2. And while they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men;
  3. and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day." And they were deeply grieved.
  4. When they came to Capernaum, those who collected the two-drachma tax came to Peter and said, "Does your teacher not pay the two-drachma tax?"
  5. He said, "Yes." And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect customs or poll-tax, from their sons or from strangers?"

  1. "From others," Peter answered. "Then the sons are exempt," Jesus said to him.
  2. "But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours."
  1. When Peter said, "From strangers," Jesus said to him, "Then the sons are exempt.
  2. "However, so that we do not offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for you and Me."
