John 4 [NASB:NIV]

  1. Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John
  2. (although Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples were),
  3. He left Judea and went away again into Galilee.
  4. And He had to pass through Samaria.
  5. So He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph;
  1. The Pharisees heard that Jesus was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John,
  2. although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples.
  3. When the Lord learned of this, he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.
  4. Now he had to go through Samaria.
  5. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

  1. and Jacob's well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
  2. There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink."
  3. For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
  4. Therefore the Samaritan woman said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
  5. Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."
  1. Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
  2. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?"
  3. (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
  4. The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
  5. Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."

  1. She said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep; where then do You get that living water?
  2. "You are not greater than our father Jacob, are You, who gave us the well, and drank of it himself and his sons and his cattle?"
  3. Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again;
  4. but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life."
  5. The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw."
  1. "Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?
  2. Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?"
  3. Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,
  4. but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
  5. The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water."

  1. He said to her, "Go, call your husband and come here."
  2. The woman answered and said, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You have correctly said, 'I have no husband';
  3. for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly."
  4. The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet.
  5. "Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship."
  1. He told her, "Go, call your husband and come back."
  2. "I have no husband," she replied. Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband.
  3. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true."
  4. "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet.
  5. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."

  1. Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.
  2. "You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.
  3. "But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.
  4. "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."
  5. The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us."
  1. Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
  2. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
  3. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
  4. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."
  5. The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us."

  1. Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am He."
  2. At this point His disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, "What do You seek?" or, "Why do You speak with her?"
  3. So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city and said to the men,
  4. "Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is it?"
  5. They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.
  1. Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he."
  2. Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, "What do you want?" or "Why are you talking with her?"
  3. Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,
  4. "Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"
  5. They came out of the town and made their way toward him.

  1. Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, "Rabbi, eat."
  2. But He said to them, "I have food to eat that you do not know about."
  3. So the disciples were saying to one another, "No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?"
  4. Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.
  5. "Do you not say, 'There are yet four months, and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest.
  1. Meanwhile his disciples urged him, "Rabbi, eat something."
  2. But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about."
  3. Then his disciples said to each other, "Could someone have brought him food?"
  4. "My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.
  5. Do you not say, 'Four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.

  1. "Already he who reaps is receiving wages and is gathering fruit for life eternal; so that he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.
  2. "For in this case the saying is true, 'One sows and another reaps.'
  3. "I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored and you have entered into their labor."
  4. From that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me all the things that I have done."
  5. So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days.
  1. Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.
  2. Thus the saying 'One sows and another reaps' is true.
  3. I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor."
  4. Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me everything I ever did."
  5. So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days.

  1. Many more believed because of His word;
  2. and they were saying to the woman, "It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world."
  3. After the two days He went forth from there into Galilee.
  4. For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.
  5. So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things that He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves also went to the feast.
  1. And because of his words many more became believers.
  2. They said to the woman, "We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world."
  3. After the two days he left for Galilee.
  4. (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)
  5. When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, for they also had been there.

  1. Therefore He came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine And there was a royal official whose son was sick at Capernaum.
  2. When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and was imploring Him to come down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.
  3. So Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you simply will not believe."
  4. The royal official said to Him, "Sir, come down before my child dies."
  5. Jesus said to him, "Go; your son lives." The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and started off.
  1. Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.
  2. When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
  3. "Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders," Jesus told him, "you will never believe."
  4. The royal official said, "Sir, come down before my child dies."
  5. Jesus replied, "You may go. Your son will live." The man took Jesus at his word and departed.

  1. As he was now going down, his slaves met him, saying that his son was living.
  2. So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. Then they said to him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him."
  3. So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, "Your son lives"; and he himself believed and his whole household.
  4. This is again a second sign that Jesus performed when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.
  1. While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living.
  2. When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, "The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour."
  3. Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." So he and all his household believed.
  4. This was the second miraculous sign that Jesus performed, having come from Judea to Galilee.
