Mark 1 [NIV:NASB]

  1. The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
  2. It is written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way"--
  3. "a voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' "
  4. And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
  5. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
  1. The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
  2. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: "BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU, WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY;
  3. THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT.'"
  4. John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
  5. And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.

  1. John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
  2. And this was his message: "After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
  3. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
  4. At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
  5. As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
  1. John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist, and his diet was locusts and wild honey.
  2. And he was preaching, and saying, "After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals.
  3. "I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
  4. In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
  5. Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him;

  1. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."
  2. At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert,
  3. and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.
  4. After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.
  5. "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!"
  1. and a voice came out of the heavens: "You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased."
  2. Immediately the Spirit impelled Him to go out into the wilderness.
  3. And He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by Satan; and He was with the wild beasts, and the angels were ministering to Him.
  4. Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God,
  5. and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel."

  1. As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
  2. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."
  3. At once they left their nets and followed him.
  4. When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.
  5. Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
  1. As He was going along by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen.
  2. And Jesus said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men."
  3. Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.
  4. Going on a little farther, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were also in the boat mending the nets.
  5. Immediately He called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went away to follow Him.

  1. They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.
  2. The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.
  3. Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out,
  4. "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"
  5. "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!"
  1. They went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach.
  2. They were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
  3. Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
  4. saying, "What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are--the Holy One of God!"
  5. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"

  1. The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.
  2. The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching--and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him."
  3. News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
  4. As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.
  5. Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her.
  1. Throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him.
  2. They were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."
  3. Immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding district of Galilee.
  4. And immediately after they came out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
  5. Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever; and immediately they spoke to Jesus about her.

  1. So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
  2. That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.
  3. The whole town gathered at the door,
  4. and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.
  5. Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
  1. And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she waited on them.
  2. When evening came, after the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all who were ill and those who were demon-possessed.
  3. And the whole city had gathered at the door.
  4. And He healed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.
  5. In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there.

  1. Simon and his companions went to look for him,
  2. and when they found him, they exclaimed: "Everyone is looking for you!"
  3. Jesus replied, "Let us go somewhere else--to the nearby villages--so I can preach there also. That is why I have come."
  4. So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
  5. A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, "If you are willing, you can make me clean."
  1. Simon and his companions searched for Him;
  2. they found Him, and said to Him, "Everyone is looking for You."
  3. He said to them, "Let us go somewhere else to the towns nearby, so that I may preach there also; for that is what I came for."
  4. And He went into their synagogues throughout all Galilee, preaching and casting out the demons.
  5. And a leper came to Jesus, beseeching Him and falling on his knees before Him, and saying, "If You are willing, You can make me clean."

  1. Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!"
  2. Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured.
  3. Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning:
  4. "See that you don't tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them."
  5. Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
  1. Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, "I am willing; be cleansed."
  2. Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.
  3. And He sternly warned him and immediately sent him away,
  4. and He said to him, "See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."
  5. But he went out and began to proclaim it freely and to spread the news around, to such an extent that Jesus could no longer publicly enter a city, but stayed out in unpopulated areas; and they were coming to Him from everywhere.
