- 야곱은 마리아의 남편 요셉을 낳았고 마리아에게서 예수가 나셨는데 이분을 그리스도라고 부른다.
- 그러므로 아브라함에서 다윗까지가 십사 대이고, 다윗에서 바빌론으로 끌려갈 때까지가 십사 대이며 바빌론으로 끌려간 다음 그리스도까지가 또한 십사 대이다.
- 예수 그리스도께서 태어나신 경위는 이러하다. 예수의 어머니 마리아는 요셉과 약혼을 하고 같이 살기 전에 잉태한 것이 드러났다. 그 잉태는 성령으로 말미암은 것이었다.
- 마리아의 남편 요셉은 법대로 사는 사람이었고 또 마리아의 일을 세상에 드러낼 생각도 없었으므로 남모르게 파혼하기로 마음먹었다.
- 요셉이 이런 생각을 하고 있을 무렵에 주의 천사가 꿈에 나타나서 "다윗의 자손 요셉아, 두려워하지 말고 마리아를 아내로 맞아들이어라. 그의 태중에 있는 아기는 성령으로 말미암은 것이다.

- Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
- But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

- 마리아가 아들을 낳을 터이니 그 이름을 예수라 하여라. 예수는 자기 백성을 죄에서 구원할 것이다." 하고 일러주었다.
- 이 모든 일로써 주께서 예언자를 시켜,
- "동정녀가 잉태하여 아들을 낳으리니 그 이름을 임마누엘이라 하리라." 하신 말씀이 그대로 이루어졌다. 임마누엘은 '하느님께서 우리와 함께 계시다.'는 뜻이다.
- 잠에서 깨어난 요셉은 주의 천사가 일러준 대로 마리아를 아내로 맞아들였다.
- 그러나 아들을 낳을 때까지 동침하지 않고 지내다가 마리아가 아들을 낳자 그 아기를 예수라고 불렀다.

- She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
- All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
- "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us."
- When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.
- But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
