- 한번은 어떤 사람이 예수께 와서 "선생님, 제가 무슨 선한 일을 해야 영원한 생명을 얻겠습니까?" 하고 물었다.
- 예수께서는 "왜 너는 나에게 와서 선한 일에 대하여 묻느냐? 참으로 선하신 분은 오직 한 분뿐이시다. 네가 생명의 나라로 들어가려거든 계명을 지켜라." 하고 대답하셨다.
- 그 젊은이가 "어느 계명입니까?" 하고 묻자 예수께서는 "'살인하지 마라. 간음하지 마라. 도둑질하지 마라. 거짓 증언하지 마라.
- 부모를 공경하여라.' 그리고 '네 이웃을 네 몸같이 사랑하여라.' 하는 계명이다." 하고 대답하셨다.
- 그 젊은이가 "저는 그 모든 것을 다 지켰습니다. 그런데 아직도 무엇을 더 해야 되겠습니까?" 하고 다시 묻자

- Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?"
- "Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments."
- "Which ones?" the man inquired. Jesus replied, " 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony,
- honor your father and mother,' and 'love your neighbor as yourself.'"
- "All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?"

- 예수께서는 "네가 완전한 사람이 되려거든 가서 너의 재산을 다 팔아 가난한 사람들에게 나누어주어라. 그러면 하늘에서 보화를 얻게 될 것이다. 그러니 내가 시키는 대로 하고 나서 나를 따라오너라." 하셨다.
- 그러나 그 젊은이는 재산이 많았기 때문에 이 말씀을 듣고 풀이 죽어 떠나갔다.
- 예수께서는 제자들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "나는 분명히 말한다. 부자는 하늘 나라에 들어가기가 어렵다.
- 거듭 말하지만 부자가 하느님 나라에 들어가는 것보다는 낙타가 바늘귀로 빠져 나가는 것이 더 쉬울 것이다."
- 제자들이 이 말씀을 듣고 깜짝 놀라서 "그러면 구원받을 사람이 어디 있겠습니까?" 하고 물었다.

- Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
- When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
- Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
- Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
- When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, "Who then can be saved?"

- 예수께서는 그들을 똑바로 보시며 "그것은 사람의 힘으로 할 수 없는 일이다. 그러나 하느님께서는 무슨 일이든 하실 수 있다." 하고 말씀하셨다.

- Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
