- 로마 황제 티베리오가 다스린 지 십오 년째 되던 해에 본티오 빌라도가 유다 총독으로 있었다. 그리고 갈릴래아 지방의 영주는 헤로데였고 이두래아와 트라코니티스 지방의 영주는 헤로데의 동생 필립보였으며 아빌레네 지방의 영주는 리사니아였다.
- 그리고 당시의 대사제는 안나스와 가야파였다. 바로 그 무렵에 즈가리야의 아들 요한은 광야에서 하느님의 말씀을 들었다.
- 그리고는 요르단 강 부근의 모든 지방을 두루 다니며 "회개하고 세례를 받아라. 그러면 죄를 용서받을 것이다." 하고 선포하였다.
- 이것은 예언자 이사야의 책에 기록된 말씀대로였다. "광야에서 외치는 이의 소리, '너희는 주의 길을 닦고 그의 길을 고르게 하여라.
- 모든 골짜기는 메워지고 높은 산과 작은 언덕은 눕혀져 굽은 길이 곧아지며 험한 길이 고르게 되는 날,

- In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar--when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene--
- during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert.
- He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
- As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: "A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.
- Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth.

- 모든 사람이 하느님의 구원을 보리라.'"
- 요한은 자기에게 세례를 받으러 나오는 사람들에게 이렇게 말하였다. "이 독사의 족속들아, 닥쳐올 징벌을 피하라고 누가 일러주더냐?
- 너희는 회개했다는 증거를 행실로 보여라. 그리고 '아브라함이 우리의 조상이다.' 하는 말은 아예 하지도 마라. 사실 하느님은 이 돌들로도 아브라함의 자녀를 만드실 수 있다.
- 도끼가 이미 나무 뿌리에 닿았으니 좋은 열매를 맺지 않는 나무는 다 찍혀 불 속에 던져질 것이다."
- 군중은 요한에게 "그러면 우리는 어떻게 해야 하겠습니까?" 하고 물었다.

- And all mankind will see God's salvation.' "
- John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?
- Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
- The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire."
- "What should we do then?" the crowd asked.

- 요한은 "속옷 두 벌을 가진 사람은 한 벌을 없는 사람에게 주고 먹을 것이 있는 사람도 이와 같이 남과 나누어 먹어야 한다." 하고 대답하였다.
- 세리들도 와서 세례를 받고 "선생님, 우리는 어떻게 했으면 좋겠습니까?" 하고 물었다.
- 요한은 "정한 대로만 받고 그 이상은 받아내지 마라." 하였다.
- 군인들도 "저희는 또 어떻게 해야 합니까?" 하고 물었다. 요한은 "협박하거나 속임수를 써서 남의 물건을 착취하지 말고 자기가 받는 봉급으로 만족하여라." 하고 일러주었다.
- 백성들은 그리스도를 기다리고 있던 터였으므로 요한을 보고 모두들 속으로 그가 혹시 그리스도가 아닐까 하고 생각하였다.

- John answered, "The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same."
- Tax collectors also came to be baptized. "Teacher," they asked, "what should we do?"
- "Don't collect any more than you are required to," he told them.
- Then some soldiers asked him, "And what should we do?" He replied, "Don't extort money and don't accuse people falsely--be content with your pay."
- The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Christ.

- 그러나 요한은 모든 사람에게 이렇게 말하였다. "나는 너희에게 물로 세례를 베풀지만 이제 머지않아 성령과 불로 세례를 베푸실 분이 오신다. 그분은 나보다 더 훌륭한 분이어서 나는 그분의 신발끈을 풀어드릴 자격조차 없다.
- 그분은 손에 키를 들고 타작 마당의 곡식을 깨끗이 가려 알곡은 모아 곳간에 들이고 쭉정이는 꺼지지 않는 불에 태우실 것이다."
- 그 밖에도 요한은 사람들에게 여러 가지로 권하면서 복음을 선포하였다.
- 그런데 영주 헤로데는 자기 동생의 아내 헤로디아를 처로 맞아들인 일과 그 밖의 온갖 잘못을 들어 자기를 책망했다고 하여
- 요한을 감옥에 가두었다. 이리하여 헤로데는 악한 일 한 가지를 더하게 되었다.

- John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
- His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."
- And with many other words John exhorted the people and preached the good news to them.
- But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and all the other evil things he had done,
- Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.

- 사람들이 모두 세례를 받고 있을 때 예수께서도 세례를 받으시고 기도를 하고 계셨는데 홀연히 하늘이 열리며
- 성령이 비둘기 형상으로 그에게 내려오셨다. 그리고 하늘에서는 "너는 내가 사랑하는 아들, 내 마음에 드는 아들이다." 하는 소리가 들려왔다.

- When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened
- and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."
