- 발람은 이스라엘에게 복을 빌어주는 것을 야훼께서 기뻐하신다는 것을 알고는, 전처럼 징조를 찾아 나서지를 아니하고 그대로 광야 쪽으로 얼굴을 돌렸다.
- 발람의 눈에 이스라엘 백성이 지파별로 자리잡고 있는 것이 보였다. 그 때 하느님의 영이 그에게 내렸다.
- 그는 푸념하듯이 이렇게 읊었다. "브올의 아들 발람의 말이다. 천리안을 가진 사내의 말이다.
- 하느님의 말씀을 듣고 하는 말이다. 전능하신 하느님을 환상으로 뵙고 엎어지며 눈이 열려 하는 말이다.
- 야곱아, 너의 천막들이 과연 좋구나! 이스라엘아, 네가 머문 곳이 참으로 좋구나!

- Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he did not resort to sorcery as at other times, but turned his face toward the desert.
- When Balaam looked out and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came upon him
- and he uttered his oracle: "The oracle of Balaam son of Beor, the oracle of one whose eye sees clearly,
- the oracle of one who hears the words of God, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:
- "How beautiful are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places, O Israel!

- 굽이굽이 뻗은 계곡과 같고 강물을 끼고 꾸며진 동산 같구나. 야훼께서 손수 심으신 느티나무와 같고 물가에서 자라는 송백 같구나.
- 물통에서는 물이 넘쳐나 땅에 뿌린 씨가 물을 듬뿍 먹는구나. 임금은 아각을 누르리니 국위를 널리 떨치겠구나.
- 이집트에서 고생하던 것들을 이끌어내신 하느님께서 들소 뿔처럼 지켜주시어 적국을 집어삼키고 그 뼈들을 짓부수고 옆구리를 찌르는구나.
- 사자처럼 웅크리고 있는데 그 사자 같은 자들을 누가 감히 건드리랴! 누구든지 너에게 복을 빌어주면 복을 받고 너를 저주하면 저주를 받으리라."
- 발락은 울화가 치밀어올라 주먹을 치며 발람에게 말하였다. "나는 원수들을 저주해 달라고 너를 불러왔는데, 너는 이렇게 세 번씩이나 그들에게 복을 빌어주었다.

- "Like valleys they spread out, like gardens beside a river, like aloes planted by the LORD, like cedars beside the waters.
- Water will flow from their buckets; their seed will have abundant water. "Their king will be greater than Agag; their kingdom will be exalted.
- "God brought them out of Egypt; they have the strength of a wild ox. They devour hostile nations and break their bones in pieces; with their arrows they pierce them.
- Like a lion they crouch and lie down, like a lioness--who dares to rouse them? "May those who bless you be blessed and those who curse you be cursed!"
- Then Balak's anger burned against Balaam. He struck his hands together and said to him, "I summoned you to curse my enemies, but you have blessed them these three times.

- 당장 너 살던 데로 물러가거라. 내가 너를 잘 대우해 주겠다고 했지만, 너는 야훼 때문에 부귀를 누리지 못하게 되었다."
- 발람이 발락에게 말하였다. "당신이 나에게 보낸 사절들에게 내가 분명히 말해 두지 않았습니까?
- 발락이 궁궐에 가득 찬 은과 금을 준다고 하여도 나는 그것이 좋든 싫든 간에 야훼께서 몸소 주시는 말씀을 어기면서까지 내 마음대로 할 수는 없다고 하지 않았습니까? 야훼께서 말씀해 주시는 것 외에는 아무 말도 할 수 없다고 하지 않았습니까?
- 이제 내 백성에게로 돌아가는 마당에, 후일 이 백성이 당신의 백성에게 어떻게 할지나 알려드리리다."
- 그리고 나서 그는 푸념하듯이 읊었다. "브올의 아들 발람의 말이다. 천리안을 가진 사내의 말이다.

- Now leave at once and go home! I said I would reward you handsomely, but the LORD has kept you from being rewarded."
- Balaam answered Balak, "Did I not tell the messengers you sent me,
- 'Even if Balak gave me his palace filled with silver and gold, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the LORD -and I must say only what the LORD says'?
- Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you of what this people will do to your people in days to come."
- Then he uttered his oracle: "The oracle of Balaam son of Beor, the oracle of one whose eye sees clearly,

- 하느님의 말씀을 듣고 하는 말이다. 지존하신 이의 생각을 깨치고 하는 말이다. 전능하신 하느님의 환상을 뵙고 엎어지며 눈이 열려 하는 말이다.
- 이 눈에 한 모습이 떠오르는구나. 그러나 당장 있을 일은 아니다. 그 모습이 환히 보이는구나. 그러나 눈앞에 다가온 일은 아니다. 야곱에게서 한 별이 솟는구나. 이스라엘에게서 한 왕권이 일어나는구나. 그가 모압 사람들의 관자놀이를 부수고 셋의 후손의 정수리를 모조리 부수리라.
- 에돔은 그의 속국이 되고 세일은 그의 차지가 되리라. 이스라엘은 힘이 뻗치고
- 야곱은 원수들을 지배하며 아르에서 빠져 나온 피난민을 멸절시키리라."
- 그는 아말렉을 바라보며 푸념하듯이 읊었다. "아말렉은 민족들 가운데 첫째라더니, 결국은 아주 망하고 말겠구나."

- the oracle of one who hears the words of God, who has knowledge from the Most High, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:
- "I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the sons of Sheth.
- Edom will be conquered; Seir, his enemy, will be conquered, but Israel will grow strong.
- A ruler will come out of Jacob and destroy the survivors of the city."
- Then Balaam saw Amalek and uttered his oracle: "Amalek was first among the nations, but he will come to ruin at last."

- 또 그는 켄족을 바라보며 푸념하듯이 읊었다. "네가 사는 곳은 견고하건만, 바위틈에 보금자리를 틀어올렸건만,
- 카인은 타 죽고 말리라. 끝내 아시리아에게 털리고 말리라."
- 그는 또 푸념하듯이 읊었다. "아, 누가 과연 살아 남으랴!
- 함대가 기띰 쪽에서 온다. 그들은 아시리아를 누르고 에벨을 누르겠지만 그들도 결국 망하고 말리라."
- 그리고 발람은 길을 떠나 자기 고장으로 갔다. 발락도 자기 길을 갔다.

- Then he saw the Kenites and uttered his oracle: "Your dwelling place is secure, your nest is set in a rock;
- yet you Kenites will be destroyed when Asshur takes you captive."
- Then he uttered his oracle: "Ah, who can live when God does this?
- Ships will come from the shores of Kittim; they will subdue Asshur and Eber, but they too will come to ruin."
- Then Balaam got up and returned home and Balak went his own way.
