- 르우벤의 후손과 가드의 후손에게는 양떼가 굉장히 많았다. 그들이 야젤 지방과 길르앗 지방을 둘러보니, 그 곳은 목장으로서 아주 알맞은 곳이었다.
- 그들 가드의 후손과 르우벤의 후손은 모세와 사제 엘르아잘과 회중의 대표들을 찾아와서 청하였다.
- "아다롯, 디본, 야젤, 니므라, 헤스본, 엘랄레, 스밤, 느보, 브온
- 지방들은 야훼께서 이스라엘 회중의 앞장을 서서 정복하신 곳인데, 목장으로 알맞은 곳입니다. 그런데 소인들은 목축을 하는 자들이니,
- 이 땅을 소인들에게 내려주셨으면 고맙기 이를 데 없겠습니다. 제발 요르단 강을 건너지 않게 해주십시오."

- The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for livestock.
- So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community, and said,
- "Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon-
- the land the LORD subdued before the people of Israel--are suitable for livestock, and your servants have livestock.
- If we have found favor in your eyes," they said, "let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan."

- 모세는 가드의 후손과 르우벤의 후손을 꾸짖었다. "같은 겨레가 싸우러 나가는데 너희만 여기에 머물러 있겠다는 말이냐?
- 어찌하여 너희는 이스라엘 백성의 용기를 꺾어 야훼께서 주시는 저 땅으로 건너가지 못하게 하려느냐?
- 나는 카데스바르네아에서 너희 아비들을 저 땅에 들여보내어 살펴보고 오라고 했더니 그 때 그들이 한 짓도 꼭 이 모양이었다.
- 그들은 에스골 골짜기에까지 가서 그 땅을 살피고 와서는 이스라엘 백성의 용기를 꺾어 야훼께서 주시는 땅으로 들어가지 못하게 했었다.
- 야훼께서는 그 날 화가 나시어, 이렇게 맹세하셨다.

- Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, "Shall your countrymen go to war while you sit here?
- Why do you discourage the Israelites from going over into the land the LORD has given them?
- This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look over the land.
- After they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and viewed the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the LORD had given them.
- The LORD's anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath:

- '이집트에서 나온 자들 가운데 스무 살이 넘은 자는 내 말을 따라 할 일을 다하지 않았으므로, 내가 아브라함과 이사악과 야곱에게 주겠다고 맹세한 땅을 결코 보지 못하리라.
- 그러나 여분네의 아들 크니즈인 갈렙과 눈의 아들 여호수아만은 야훼의 뜻을 따라 할 일을 다 했으므로 예외다.'
- 우리 때문에 야훼께서는 크게 노하시어 우리를 사십 년 동안 광야에서 떠돌게 하셨다. 그리하여 야훼의 눈에 거슬리는 일을 한 세대는 마침내 다 없어지고 말았다.
- 그런데 너희는 아비들을 따라 또 못할 짓을 저질러 이스라엘에 또다시 야훼의 크신 분노를 불러들이려는구나!
- 너희가 야훼께 등을 돌려 그를 따르지 않는다면, 야훼께서는 너희를 광야에 더 내버려두실 것이다. 그러면 이 온 백성이 너희 때문에 결국 망하고 말리라."

- 'Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of the men twenty years old or more who came up out of Egypt will see the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob-
- not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the LORD wholeheartedly.'
- The LORD's anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the desert forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.
- "And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the LORD even more angry with Israel.
- If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the desert, and you will be the cause of their destruction."

- 그들은 모세 앞으로 나와서 제안을 하였다. "우리는 우선 여기에 우리의 가축이 머물 우리를 만들고 식구들이 살 성들을 쌓겠습니다.
- 그리고 우리는 선발대가 되어 이스라엘 백성을 이끌고 들어가 모두 자리를 잡을 때까지 무기를 들고 앞장서겠습니다. 그 동안 우리에게 딸린 식구들은 이 땅 주민들에게 피해를 입지 않도록 튼튼한 성 안에서 지내게 해주십시오.
- 우리는 이스라엘 백성이 각자 자기의 유산을 차지할 때까지 집으로 돌아오지 않겠습니다.
- 우리는 요르단 강 이쪽 해 뜨는 곳에서 땅을 유산으로 받았기 때문에 요르단 강 저 건너편에서는 남들처럼 땅을 유산으로 받지 않을 것입니다."
- 모세가 그들에게 대답했다. "그렇게 하여라. 너희는 야훼께서 보시는 앞에서 싸우러 나서라.

- Then they came up to him and said, "We would like to build pens here for our livestock and cities for our women and children.
- But we are ready to arm ourselves and go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them to their place. Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants of the land.
- We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has received his inheritance.
- We will not receive any inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan, because our inheritance has come to us on the east side of the Jordan."
- Then Moses said to them, "If you will do this--if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for battle,

- 너희 정예부대는 모두 야훼께서 보시는 앞에서 요르단 강을 건너라. 그리하여 마침내 야훼께서 몸소 당신의 원수들을 내쫓으시어
- 야훼 앞에서 그 지방이 모두 점령된 다음에 이리로 돌아오너라. 그리하면 너희는 야훼 앞에서도, 이스라엘 앞에서도 떳떳하리라. 그리고 이 땅은 야훼 앞에서 너희의 차지가 될 것이다.
- 그대로 하지 않으면 너희는 야훼께 죄인이 되고, 그 죄가 너희 덜미를 잡으리라.
- 너희에게 딸린 식구들이 살 성을 쌓고 양떼가 머무를 우리를 만들어라. 그러나 너희가 입으로 한 말은 지켜야 한다."
- 가드 후손과 르우벤 후손이 모세에게 다짐하였다. "소인들은 나리께서 명령하신 대로 하겠습니다.

- and if all of you will go armed over the Jordan before the LORD until he has driven his enemies out before him-
- then when the land is subdued before the LORD, you may return and be free from your obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will be your possession before the LORD.
- "But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the LORD; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.
- Build cities for your women and children, and pens for your flocks, but do what you have promised."
- The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, "We your servants will do as our lord commands.

- 그러나 우리 아이들과 부녀자들과 양떼와 모든 가축떼는 길르앗에 있는 성읍들에 머물러 있게 하겠습니다.
- 소인들 정예부대는 나리께서 말씀하신 대로 야훼 앞에서 싸우러 건너가도록 하겠습니다."
- 그러자 모세는 사제 엘르아잘과 눈의 아들 여호수아와 이스라엘 각 지파의 가문 어른들에게 명령을 내려 이들에게 해줄 일을 일렀다.
- "만일 가드 후손과 르우벤 후손의 모든 정예부대가 야훼 앞에서 너희와 함께 요르단 강을 건너가 싸워서 그 지방을 점령하게 되거든, 너희는 길르앗 지방을 그들에게 주어 차지하게 하여라.
- 그러나 그들 정예부대가 너희와 함께 건너가지 않으면, 가나안 땅에서 너희와 함께 한몫 차지하게 해주어라."

- Our children and wives, our flocks and herds will remain here in the cities of Gilead.
- But your servants, every man armed for battle, will cross over to fight before the LORD, just as our lord says."
- Then Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and to the family heads of the Israelite tribes.
- He said to them, "If the Gadites and Reubenites, every man armed for battle, cross over the Jordan with you before the LORD, then when the land is subdued before you, give them the land of Gilead as their possession.
- But if they do not cross over with you armed, they must accept their possession with you in Canaan."

- 가드의 후손과 르우벤의 후손이 대답하였다. "야훼께서 소인들에게 말씀하신 것을 그대로 다 하겠습니다.
- 우리 정예부대는 모두 야훼 앞에서 가나안 땅으로 건너가겠습니다. 그러니 요르단 강 동쪽에 있는 땅을 저희에게 유산으로 주십시오."
- 모세는 가드의 후손과 르우벤의 후손과 요셉의 아들 므나쎄 지파의 반에게 아모리 왕 시혼의 영토와 바산 왕 옥의 영토, 곧 그 땅과 그들의 지경 안에 있는 성읍들과 그 땅에 널려 있는 성읍들을 주었다.
- 가드의 후손이 세운 성읍으로는 디본, 아타롯, 아로엘,
- 아트롯 소반, 야젤, 욕브하,

- The Gadites and Reubenites answered, "Your servants will do what the LORD has said.
- We will cross over before the LORD into Canaan armed, but the property we inherit will be on this side of the Jordan."
- Then Moses gave to the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan--the whole land with its cities and the territory around them.
- The Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
- Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,

- 벳니므라, 벳하란 등 견고한 성들이 있다. 그들은 또 양 우리들도 만들었다.
- 르우벤의 후손이 세운 성읍으로는 헤스본, 엘랄레, 키랴다임,
- 느보, 후에 이름이 바뀐 바알므온, 시브마가 있었다. 이 이름들은 저희가 세우고 나서 붙인 이름들이다.
- 므나쎄의 아들 마길이 길르앗으로 가서 거기에 있는 아모리인들을 쫓아내고 그 땅을 점령하였으므로,
- 모세는 길르앗을 므나쎄의 아들 마길에게 주어 살게 하였다.

- Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran as fortified cities, and built pens for their flocks.
- And the Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh and Kiriathaim,
- as well as Nebo and Baal Meon (these names were changed) and Sibmah. They gave names to the cities they rebuilt.
- The descendants of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it and drove out the Amorites who were there.
- So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites, the descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there.

- Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, captured their settlements and called them Havvoth Jair.
- And Nobah captured Kenath and its surrounding settlements and called it Nobah after himself.
