- 예수께서 요한보다 더 많은 제자를 얻으시고 세례를 베푸신다는 소문이 바리사이파 사람들의 귀에 들어갔다.
- (사실은 예수께서 세례를 베푸신 것이 아니라 제자들이 베푼 것이었다.)
- 예수께서는 그것을 아시고 유다를 떠나 다시 갈릴래아로 가기로 하셨는데
- 그 곳으로 가자면 사마리아를 거쳐야만 하였다.
- 예수께서 사마리아 지방의 시카르라는 동네에 이르셨다. 이 동네는 옛날에 야곱이 아들 요셉에게 준 땅에서 가까운 곳인데

- The Pharisees heard that Jesus was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John,
- although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples.
- When the Lord learned of this, he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.
- Now he had to go through Samaria.
- So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

- 거기에는 야곱의 우물이 있었다. 먼 길에 지치신 예수께서는 그 우물가에 가 앉으셨다. 때는 이미 정오에 가까웠다.
- 마침 그 때에 한 사마리아 여자가 물을 길으러 나왔다. 예수께서 그를 보시고 물을 좀 달라고 청하셨다.
- 제자들은 먹을 것을 사러 시내에 들어가고 없었다.
- 사마리아 여자는 예수께 "당신은 유다인이고 저는 사마리아 여자인데 어떻게 저더러 물을 달라고 하십니까?" 하고 말하였다. 유다인들과 사마리아인들은 서로 상종하는 일이 없었던 것이다.
- 예수께서는 그 여자에게 "하느님께서 주시는 선물이 무엇인지, 또 너에게 물을 청하는 내가 누구인지 알았더라면 오히려 네가 나에게 청했을 것이다. 그러면 내가 너에게 샘솟는 물을 주었을 것이다." 하고 대답하시자

- Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
- When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?"
- (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
- The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
- Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."

- 그 여자는 "선생님, 우물이 이렇게 깊은데다 선생님께서는 두레박도 없으시면서 어디서 그 샘솟는 물을 떠다 주시겠다는 말씀입니까?
- 이 우물물은 우리 조상 야곱이 마셨고 그 자손들과 가축까지도 마셨습니다. 선생님께서는 이러한 우물을 우리에게 주신 야곱보다 더 훌륭하시다는 말씀입니까?" 하고 물었다.
- 예수께서는 "이 우물물을 마시는 사람은 다시 목마르겠지만
- 내가 주는 물을 마시는 사람은 영원히 목마르지 않을 것이다. 내가 주는 물은 그 사람 속에서 샘물처럼 솟아올라 영원히 살게 할 것이다." 하셨다.
- 이 말씀을 듣고 그 여자는 "선생님, 그 물을 저에게 좀 주십시오. 그러면 다시는 목마르지도 않고 물을 길으러 여기까지 나오지 않아도 되겠습니다." 하고 청하였다.

- "Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?
- Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?"
- Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,
- but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
- The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water."

- 예수께서 그 여자에게 가서 남편을 불러오라고 하셨다.
- 그 여자가 남편이 없다고 대답하자 예수께서는 "남편이 없다는 말은 숨김없는 말이다.
- 너에게는 남편이 다섯이나 있었고 지금 함께 살고 있는 남자도 사실은 네 남편이 아니니 너는 바른 대로 말하였다." 하고 말씀하셨다.
- 그랬더니 그 여자는 "과연 선생님은 예언자이십니다.
- 그런데 우리 조상은 저 산에서 하느님께 예배 드렸는데 선생님네들은 예배 드릴 곳이 예루살렘에 있다고 합니다." 하고 말하였다.

- He told her, "Go, call your husband and come back."
- "I have no husband," she replied. Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband.
- The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true."
- "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet.
- Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."

- 예수께서는 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "내 말을 믿어라. 사람들이 아버지께 예배를 드릴 때에 '이 산이다.' 또는 '예루살렘이다.' 하고 굳이 장소를 가리지 않아도 될 때가 올 것이다.
- 너희는 무엇인지도 모르고 예배하지만 우리는 우리가 예배 드리는 분을 잘 알고 있다. 구원은 유다인에게서 오기 때문이다.
- 그러나 진실하게 예배하는 사람들이 영적으로 참되게 아버지께 예배를 드릴 때가 올 터인데 바로 지금이 그 때이다. 아버지께서는 이렇게 예배하는 사람들을 찾고 계신다.
- 하느님은 영적인 분이시다. 그러므로 예배하는 사람들은 영적으로 참되게 하느님께 예배 드려야 한다."
- 그 여자가 "저는 그리스도라 하는 메시아가 오실 것을 알고 있습니다. 그분이 오시면 저희에게 모든 것을 다 알려주시겠지요." 하자

- Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
- You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
- Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
- God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."
- The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us."

- 예수께서는 "너와 말하고 있는 내가 바로 그 사람이다." 하고 말씀하셨다.

- Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he."
