- 삼 년이라는 세월이 흘렀다. 야훼의 말씀이 엘리야에게 내렸다. "가서 아합을 만나거라. 내가 비를 땅 위에 내리리라."
- 그리하여 엘리야는 아합을 만나러 갔다. 가면서 보니 사마리아에 기근이 매우 심하였다.
- 아합은 궁내대신인 오바디야를 불렀다. 오바디야는 야훼를 지극히 경외하는 사람이었다.
- 그는 왕후 이세벨이 야훼의 예언자들을 학살할 때 예언자 백 명을 오십 명씩 동굴에 숨기고 먹을 것과 물을 날라다 주어 살려낸 사람이었다.
- 아합이 그 오바디야에게 말하였다. "그대는 나와 둘이서 전국을 다녀보자. 어쩌다가 풀이 있는 곳을 만날지도 모르니 모든 샘과 계곡을 샅샅이 뒤져보자. 어떻게든 말과 노새를 살려야지 그냥 죽일 수는 없지 않겠느냐?"

- After a long time, in the third year, the word of the LORD came to Elijah: "Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land."
- So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria,
- and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, who was in charge of his palace. (Obadiah was a devout believer in the LORD.
- While Jezebel was killing off the LORD's prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.)
- Ahab had said to Obadiah, "Go through the land to all the springs and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals."

- 이리하여 그들은 전 국토를 둘로 나누고 한 쪽은 아합 자신이, 다른 쪽은 오바디야가 담당하여 두루 다니면서 물을 찾기 시작하였다.
- 오바디야는 돌아다니다가 자기를 만나러 온 엘리야와 마주치게 되었다. 그는 엘리야를 알아보고 그 앞에 엎드려 인사를 하였다. "아니, 엘리야 선생님이 아니십니까?"
- 엘리야가 대답하였다. "그렇소. 가서 왕에게 엘리야가 여기에 와 있다고 전하시오."
- 그러나 오바디야는 놀라며 말하였다. "내가 무슨 잘못을 저질렀다고 나를 아합의 손에 넘겨 죽이시려는 것입니까?
- 선생님의 하느님 야훼께서 살아 계심을 두고 말씀드립니다. 왕은 선생님을 찾기 위하여 모든 나라, 모든 왕국으로 사람을 보냈었습니다. 그러나 사람들이 돌아와서는 엘리야가 없더라고 보고하였습니다. 그러면 왕은 그들에게 찾으러 갔던 그 나라와 왕국을 걸고 선생님이 없다는 것을 맹세하게 하였습니다.

- So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.
- As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized him, bowed down to the ground, and said, "Is it really you, my lord Elijah?"
- "Yes," he replied. "Go tell your master, 'Elijah is here.' "
- "What have I done wrong," asked Obadiah, "that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death?
- As surely as the LORD your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you.

- 그런데 나더러 왕에게 가서 엘리야가 여기 있다고 보고하라는 말씀입니까?
- 내가 선생님을 떠난 즉시 야훼의 영이 선생님을 알지 못하는 곳으로 옮겨 가면 어떻게 합니까? 나의 보고를 듣고 왕이 왔을 때 선생님은 여기 계시지 않겠지요. 그렇게 되면 그는 나를 죽일 것입니다. 나는 어릴 때부터 야훼를 경외한 사람입니다.
- 내가 한 일은 들어서 아시겠습니다만, 전에 이세벨이 야훼의 예언자들을 학살했을 때, 야훼의 예언자 백 명을 오십 명씩 동굴에 숨기고 먹을 것과 물을 날라다 주어 살려내었습니다.
- 그런데 선생님은 지금 나더러 왕에게 가서 엘리야가 있는 곳을 안다고 보고하라는 말씀입니까? 그러면 그는 나를 죽일 것입니다."
- 엘리야가 대답하였다. "내가 섬기는 만군의 야훼께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하오. 내가 기필코 오늘 왕을 만나리다."

- But now you tell me to go to my master and say, 'Elijah is here.'
- I don't know where the Spirit of the LORD may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn't find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped the LORD since my youth.
- Haven't you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the LORD ? I hid a hundred of the LORD's prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water.
- And now you tell me to go to my master and say, 'Elijah is here.' He will kill me!"
- Elijah said, "As the LORD Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today."

- 그러자 오바디야는 아합을 찾아 소식을 전하였다. 아합이 엘리야를 만나러 왔다.
- 아합은 엘리야를 보자 말을 건넸다. "그대가 이스라엘을 망치는 장본인인가?"
- 엘리야가 대답하였다. "내가 이스라엘을 망치는 것이 아닙니다. 이스라엘을 망하게 하는 사람은 바로 왕 자신과 왕의 가문입니다. 왕께서는 야훼의 계명을 버리고 바알을 받들어 섬겼습니다.
- 이제 온 이스라엘 백성을 가르멜 산으로 모이게 하여 나에게 보내십시오. 그리고 이세벨 왕비에게서 녹을 받아 살고 있는 바알의 예언자 사백오십 명과 아세라의 예언자 사백 명도 함께 모아주십시오."
- 아합은 모든 이스라엘 백성들을 부르고 예언자들에게 가르멜 산으로 모이라고 하였다.

- So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
- When he saw Elijah, he said to him, "Is that you, you troubler of Israel?"
- "I have not made trouble for Israel," Elijah replied. "But you and your father's family have. You have abandoned the LORD's commands and have followed the Baals.
- Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table."
- So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.

- 엘리야가 백성들 앞에 나서서 말하였다. "여러분은 언제까지 양다리를 걸치고 있을 작정입니까? 만일 야훼가 하느님이라면 그를 따르고 바알이 하느님이라면 그를 따르시오." 그러나 백성들은 아무런 대답도 하지 않았다.
- 엘리야가 백성들에게 다시 말하였다. "야훼의 예언자로서 살아 남은 사람은 나 하나요. 그러나 바알의 예언자는 사백오십 명이나 있습니다.
- 이제 우리에게 황소 두 마리를 끌어다 주시오. 그들에게 한 마리를 잡아 장작 위에 올려놓고 불을 붙이지 않은 채 그냥 두게 합시다. 나도 한 마리를 잡아 장작 위에 올려놓고 불을 붙이지 않겠습니다.
- 당신들은 당신들이 섬기는 신의 이름을 부르시오. 나는 나의 하느님 야훼의 이름을 부르겠소. 어느 쪽이든지 불을 내려 응답하는 신이 참 하느님입니다." 그러자 백성들이 모두 그렇게 하자고 하였다.
- 엘리야가 바알의 예언자들에게 말하였다. "당신들이 수가 많으니 먼저 시작하시오. 황소 한 마리를 택하여 제물로 드리고 당신들 신의 이름으로 부르시오. 그러나 불을 붙이지는 마시오."

- Elijah went before the people and said, "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him." But the people said nothing.
- Then Elijah said to them, "I am the only one of the LORD's prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.
- Get two bulls for us. Let them choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it.
- Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire--he is God." Then all the people said, "What you say is good."
- Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire."

- 그들은 준비한 황소를 받아 잡아놓고는 아침부터 한낮이 되기까지 바알의 이름을 불렀다. "오, 바알이여, 대답하소서." 그러나 대답은커녕 아무런 소리도 들리지 않았다. 그들 예언자들은 자기네가 만든 제단을 돌면서 절뚝거리는 춤을 추었다.
- 한낮이 되자 엘리야가 그들을 조롱하여 말하였다. "바알은 신이니까, 더 크게 불러보아라. 깊은 사색에 빠져 계신지도 모르지. 외출 중인지 아니면 여행 중인지 혹은 잠이 드셨는지도 모르니 어서 깨워보아라."
- 그들은 더 크게 소리쳤다. 자기네 의식을 따라 칼과 창으로 몸에 상처를 내어 피까지 흘렸다.
- 한낮이 지나 제사 시간이 될 때까지 그들은 신접한 모습으로 날뛰었다. 그러나 여전히 대답은커녕 아무 소리도, 아무 기척도 없었다.
- 그러자 엘리야가 온 백성에게 자기 앞으로 다가오라고 말하였다. 백성들이 모두 다가오자 그는 허물어진 야훼의 제단을 고쳐 쌓았다.

- So they took the bull given them and prepared it. Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. "O Baal, answer us!" they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.
- At noon Elijah began to taunt them. "Shout louder!" he said. "Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened."
- So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed.
- Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.
- Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come here to me." They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD, which was in ruins.

- 엘리야는 일찍이 야훼께서 이스라엘이라는 이름을 내려주신 야곱의 열두 아들들에게서 나온 지파의 수대로 돌을 열두 개 모았다.
- 엘리야는 그 돌 열두 개로 야훼의 제단을 쌓았다. 그리고 제단 주위에는 곡식 두 가마 정도 들어갈 만큼 큰 도랑을 팠다.
- 그는 장작을 쌓은 다음 송아지를 잡아 그 위에 올려놓았다. 그리고 나서 물을 네 동이 가득 채워다가 번제물과 장작 위에 쏟으라고 하였다. 그들이 그대로 하자
- 그는 그렇게 한 번 더 하라고 하였다. 그들이 그대로 하자 다시 한 번 더 그렇게 하라고 하였다. 세 번을 붓자
- 물이 제단 주위로 넘쳐흘렀고 옆 도랑에 가득 괴었다.

- Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying, "Your name shall be Israel."
- With the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs of seed.
- He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, "Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood."
- "Do it again," he said, and they did it again. "Do it a third time," he ordered, and they did it the third time.
- The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.

- 제사 드리는 시간이 되어 예언자 엘리야가 앞으로 나와서 외쳤다. "오, 아브라함과 이사악과 이스라엘의 하느님 야훼여, 이제 당신께서 이스라엘의 하느님이시고 제가 당신의 종이며 제가 한 모든 일이 당신의 말씀을 좇아 한 것임을 모든 사람으로 하여금 알게 하여주십시오.
- 응답해 주십시오. 야훼여, 저에게 응답해 주십시오. 그리하여 이 백성으로 하여금 야훼께서 하느님이심을 깨닫고 그들의 마음을 돌이키게 하신 분이 당신이심을 알게 하여주십시오."
- 그러자 야훼의 불길이 내려와 제물과 함께 나무와 돌과 흙을 모두 태웠고 도랑에 괴어 있던 물을 한 방울도 남기지 않고 말려버렸다.
- 온 백성이 이 광경을 보고 땅에 엎드려서 부르짖었다. "야훼께서 하느님이십니다. 야훼께서 하느님이십니다."
- 엘리야가 백성들에게 소리쳤다. "바알의 예언자들을 하나도 놓치지 말고 모조리 사로잡으시오." 엘리야는 백성들이 사로잡아 온 그 예언자들을 키손 개울로 끌고 가 거기에서 죽였다.

- At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: "O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.
- Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again."
- Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.
- When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, "The LORD -he is God! The LORD -he is God!"
- Then Elijah commanded them, "Seize the prophets of Baal. Don't let anyone get away!" They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.

- 엘리야가 아합에게 말하였다. "이젠 돌아가셔서 음식을 드십시오. 내 귀에 비오는 소리가 들립니다."
- 아합이 돌아가서 음식을 드는데 엘리야는 가르멜 산 꼭대기에 올라가 무릎을 꿇고 얼굴을 양무릎 사이에 묻었다.
- 엘리야는 그의 시종에게 올라가서 서쪽 하늘을 바라보라고 일렀다. 시종이 올라가 서쪽 하늘을 바라보고 와서는 아무것도 보이지 않는다고 대답하였다. 엘리야는 일곱 번이나 되풀이하여 가보라고 명하였다.
- 시종은 일곱 번째 보고 와서는 바다에서 손바닥만한 구름이 한 장 떠올랐다고 보고하였다. 그러자 엘리야가 시종에게 명령하였다. "아합에게 가서, 비가 쏟아져 길이 막히기 전에 어서 병거를 채비하여 내려가시라고 일러라."
- 그러는 동안 하늘이 구름으로 덮이어 캄캄해지면서 바람이 일기 시작하더니 마침내 큰 비가 쏟아지기 시작하였다. 아합이 병거를 몰아 이즈르엘을 향하여 가는데

- And Elijah said to Ahab, "Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain."
- So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.
- "Go and look toward the sea," he told his servant. And he went up and looked. "There is nothing there," he said. Seven times Elijah said, "Go back."
- The seventh time the servant reported, "A cloud as small as a man's hand is rising from the sea." So Elijah said, "Go and tell Ahab, 'Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.' "
- Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain came on and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.

- 엘리야는 야훼의 힘에 사로잡혀 옷을 걷어붙이고 아합을 앞질러 이즈르엘 어귀까지 뛰어갔다.

- The power of the LORD came upon Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
