- 하느님께서는 아브라함과 그의 후손들에게 세상을 물려주겠다고 약속하셨는데 그것은 아브라함이 율법을 지켰다 해서가 아니라 하느님께서 그의 믿음을 보시고 그를 올바른 사람으로 인정하셨기 때문에 하신 약속이었습니다.
- 만일 율법을 지키는 사람들만이 상속자가 될 수 있다면 믿음은 무의미하게 되고 그 약속은 무효가 됩니다.
- 법이 없으면 법을 어기는 일도 없게 됩니다. 법이 있으면 법을 어기게 되어 하느님의 진노를 사게 마련입니다.
- 그러므로 하느님께서는 사람의 믿음을 보시고 그를 상속자로 삼으십니다. 이렇게 하느님께서는 은총을 베푸시며 율법을 지키는 사람들에게만 아니라 아브라함의 믿음을 따르는 사람들에게까지, 곧 아브라함의 모든 후손들에게 그 약속을 보장해 주십니다. 아브라함은 우리 모두의 조상입니다.
- 성서에 "내가 너를 만민의 조상으로 삼았다." 하지 않았습니까? 그는 죽은 자를 살리시고 없는 것을 있게 만드시는 하느님을 믿었던 것입니다.

- It was not through law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith.
- For if those who live by law are heirs, faith has no value and the promise is worthless,
- because law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.
- Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham's offspring--not only to those who are of the law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all.
- As it is written: "I have made you a father of many nations." He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed--the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were.

- 아브라함은 절망 속에서도 희망을 잃지 않고 믿어서 마침내 "네 자손은 저렇게 번성하리라." 하신 말씀대로 "만민의 조상"이 되었습니다.
- 그의 나이가 백 세에 가까워서 이미 죽은 사람이나 다름없이 되었고 또 그의 아내 사라의 몸에서도 이제는 아기를 바랄 수 없다는 것을 알았지만 그는 믿음을 가지고 희망을 잃지 않았습니다.
- 그는 끝내 하느님의 약속을 믿고 의심하지 않았을 뿐만 아니라 더욱 굳게 믿으며 하느님을 찬양하였습니다.
- 그리고 그는 하느님께서 약속하신 것을 능히 이루어주시리라고 확신하였습니다.
- 하느님께서는 이런 믿음을 보시고 아브라함을 "올바른 사람으로 인정하셨습니다."

- Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be."
- Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead--since he was about a hundred years old--and that Sarah's womb was also dead.
- Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God,
- being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.
- This is why "it was credited to him as righteousness."

- "올바른 사람으로 인정하셨다." 하는 말씀은 비단 아브라함만을 두고 하신 것이 아니라
- 우리를 두고 하시는 말씀이기도 합니다. 곧 우리 주 예수를 죽은 자들 가운데서 다시 살리신 분을 믿는 우리들까지도 올바른 사람으로 인정해 주신다는 말씀입니다.
- 예수는 우리의 죄 때문에 죽으셨다가 우리를 하느님과 올바른 관계에 놓아주시기 위해서 다시 살아나신 분이십니다.

- The words "it was credited to him" were written not for him alone,
- but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness--for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.
- He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
