- 하느님의 종이며 예수 그리스도의 사도인 나 바울로가 이 편지를 씁니다. 나는 하느님께서 뽑으신 사람들의 믿음을 도와주고 우리 종교의 진리를 깨우쳐주기 위해서 사도로 임명되었습니다.
- 우리 종교는 영원한 생명에 대한 희망을 가져다 줍니다. 이 영원한 생명은 거짓말을 하시지 않는 하느님께서 아득한 옛날에 벌써 약속해 주신 것입니다.
- 하느님께서는 적절한 시기에 우리의 전도를 통해서 당신의 뜻을 분명히 드러내셨으며 나는 우리 구세주 하느님의 명령으로 이 사도직을 맡았습니다.
- 나와 같은 믿음의 생활을 하는 진실된 아들 디도에게 이 편지를 씁니다. 하느님 아버지와 우리 구세주 그리스도 예수께서 은총과 평화를 그대에게 내려주시기를 빕니다.
- 내가 그대를 그레데 섬에 홀로 남겨두고 온 것은 내가 거기에서 다 하지 못한 일을 그대가 완성하고 내가 일러둔 대로 도시마다 교회의 원로들을 임명하게 하기 위한 것이었습니다.

- 원로가 될 사람은 흠잡힐 데가 없는 사람이어야 하고 한 여자만을 아내로 가진 사람이어야 합니다. 그리고 그의 자녀들은 신자라야 하고 방탕하거나 순종하지 않는다는 비난을 받아서는 안 됩니다.
- 감독자는 하느님의 집안일을 관리하는 사람으로서 흠잡힐 데가 없고 거만하지 않고 쉽사리 성내지 않고 술을 즐기지 않고 폭행을 하지 않고 부당한 이득을 탐내지 않는 사람이어야 하는 것입니다.
- 감독자는 오히려 손님 대접을 잘하고 선을 사랑하고 신중하고 올바르고 거룩하고 자기를 억제할 줄 알고
- 교회가 가르치는 진실된 말씀을 굳게 지키는 사람이어야 합니다. 그래야 그가 건전한 가르침으로 남을 가르칠 수도 있고 반대자들을 반박할 수도 있을 것입니다.

- An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient.
- Since an overseer is entrusted with God's work, he must be blameless--not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain.
- Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined.
- He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.
