- 예수께서 열두 제자에게 분부하시고 나서 그 근방 여러 마을에서 가르치시며 전도하시려고 그 곳을 떠나셨다.
- 그런데 요한은 그리스도께서 하신 일을 감옥에서 전해 듣고 제자들을 예수께 보내어
- "오시기로 되어 있는 분이 바로 선생님이십니까? 그렇지 않으면 우리가 다른 분을 기다려야 하겠습니까?" 하고 묻게 하였다.
- 예수께서는 그들에게 이렇게 대답하셨다. "너희가 듣고 본 대로 요한에게 가서 알려라.
- 소경이 보고 절름발이가 제대로 걸으며 나병환자가 깨끗해지고 귀머거리가 들으며 죽은 사람이 살아나고 가난한 사람들에게 복음이 전하여진다.

- And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.
- Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
- And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
- Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:
- The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

- 나에게 의심을 품지 않는 사람은 행복하다."
- 요한의 제자들이 물러간 뒤에 예수께서 군중에게 요한을 두고 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "너희는 무엇을 보러 광야에 나갔더냐? 바람에 흔들리는 갈대냐?
- 아니면 무엇을 보러 나갔더냐? 화려한 옷을 입은 사람이냐? 화려한 옷을 입은 사람은 왕궁에 있다.
- 그렇다면 너희는 무엇을 보러 나갔더냐? 예언자냐? 그렇다! 그런데 사실은 예언자보다 더 훌륭한 사람을 보았다. 성서에,
- '너보다 앞서 내 사자를 보내니 그가 네 갈 길을 미리 닦아놓으리라.' 하신 말씀은 바로 이 사람을 가리킨 것이다.

- And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
- And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
- But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.
- But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
- For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

- 나는 분명히 말한다. 일찍이 여자의 몸에서 태어난 사람 중에 세례자 요한보다 더 큰 인물은 없었다. 그러나 하늘 나라에서 가장 작은 이라도 그 사람보다는 크다."
- "세례자 요한 때부터 지금까지 하늘 나라는 폭행을 당해 왔다. 그리고 폭행을 쓰는 사람들이 하늘 나라를 빼앗으려고 한다.
- 그런데 모든 예언서와 율법이 예언하는 일은 요한에게서 끝난다.
- 너희가 그 예언을 받아들인다면 다시 오기로 된 엘리야가 바로 그 요한임을 알 것이다.
- 들을 귀가 있는 사람은 알아들어라."

- Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
- And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
- For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
- And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
- He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

- "이 세대를 무엇에 비길 수 있으랴?
- 마치 장터에서 아이들이 편 갈라 앉아 서로 소리지르며 '우리가 피리를 불어도 너희는 춤추지 않았고 우리가 곡을 하여도 가슴을 치지 않았다.' 하며 노는 것과 같구나.
- 요한이 나타나서 먹지도 않고 마시지도 않으니까 '저 사람은 미쳤다.' 하더니
- 사람의 아들이 와서 먹기도 하고 마시기도 하니까 '보아라, 저 사람은 즐겨 먹고 마시며 세리와 죄인하고만 어울리는구나.' 하고 말한다. 그러나 하느님의 지혜가 옳다는 것은 이미 나타난 결과로 알 수 있다."
- 예수께서 기적을 가장 많이 행하신 동네에서 회개하지 않으므로 그 동네들을 꾸짖으셨다.

- But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
- And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
- For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
- The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
- Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:

- "코라진아, 너는 화를 입으리라. 베싸이다야, 너도 화를 입으리라. 너희에게 베푼 기적들을 띠로와 시돈에서 보였더라면 그들은 벌써 베옷을 입고 재를 머리에 들쓰고 회개하였을 것이다.
- 그러니 잘 들어라. 심판 날에 띠로와 시돈이 너희보다 오히려 가벼운 벌을 받을 것이다.
- 너 가파르나움아! 네가 하늘에 오를 성싶으냐 지옥에 떨어질 것이다. 너에게 베푼 기적들을 소돔에서 보였더라면 그 도시는 오늘까지 남아 있었을 것이다.
- 그러니 잘 들어라. 심판 날에 소돔 땅이 너보다 오히려 더 가벼운 벌을 받을 것이다."

- Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
- But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
- And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
- But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
