- 예수께서는 이 모든 말씀을 사람들에게 들려주신 뒤에 가파르나움으로 가셨다.
- 마침 그 때 어떤 백인대장의 종이 중병으로 거의 죽게 되었는데 그는 주인이 대단히 아끼는 종이었다.
- 백인대장이 예수의 이야기를 듣고 유다인의 원로 몇 사람을 예수께 보내어, 집에 오셔서 자기 종을 살려주십사 하고 간청하게 하였다.
- 그래서 그들은 예수께 와서 간곡히 부탁 드리기를 "그 백인대장은 도와주실 만한 사람입니다.
- 그는 우리 민족을 사랑할 뿐만 아니라 우리에게 회당까지 지어주었습니다." 하였다.

- Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum.
- And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.
- And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.
- And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:
- For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.

- 이 말을 들으시고 예수께서는 그들과 함께 가셨다. 백인대장의 집에서 그리 멀지 않은 곳에 이르렀을 때에 백인대장은 친구들을 시켜 예수께 전갈을 보냈다. "주님, 수고롭게 오실 것까지 없습니다. 저는 주님을 제 집에 모실 만한 사람이 못 되며
- 감히 주님을 나가 뵐 생각을 못하고 있습니다. 그저 한 말씀만 하십시오. 그러면 제 종이 낫겠습니다.
- 저도 남의 밑에 있는 사람입니다만 제 밑에도 부하들이 있어서 제가 이 사람더러 가라 하면 가고 또 저 사람더러 오라 하면 옵니다. 또 제 종에게 이것을 하라 하면 합니다."
- 예수께서 이 말을 들으시고 감탄하시며 따라오는 군중을 돌아다 보시고 "잘 들어두어라. 나는 이런 믿음을 이스라엘 사람에게서도 본 일이 없다." 하고 말씀하셨다.
- 심부름 왔던 사람들이 집에 돌아가 보니 종은 이미 깨끗이 나아 있었다.

- Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:
- Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.
- For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
- When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
- And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick.
