- 바리사이파 사람들 가운데 니고데모라는 사람이 있었다. 그는 유다인들의 지도자 중 한 사람이었는데
- 어느 날 밤에 예수를 찾아와서 "선생님, 우리는 선생님을 하느님께서 보내신 분으로 알고 있습니다. 하느님께서 함께 계시지 않고서야 누가 선생님처럼 그런 기적들을 행할 수 있겠습니까?" 하고 말하였다.
- 그러자 예수께서는 "정말 잘 들어두어라. 누구든지 새로 나지 아니하면 아무도 하느님의 나라를 볼 수 없다." 하고 말씀하셨다.
- 니고데모는 "다 자란 사람이 어떻게 다시 태어날 수 있겠습니까? 다시 어머니 뱃속에 들어갔다가 나올 수야 없지 않습니까?" 하고 물었다.
- "정말 잘 들어두어라. 물과 성령으로 새로 나지 않으면 아무도 하느님 나라에 들어갈 수 없다.

- There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
- The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
- Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
- Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
- Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

- 육에서 나온 것은 육이며 영에서 나온 것은 영이다.
- 새로 나야 된다는 내 말을 이상하게 생각하지 마라.
- 바람은 제가 불고 싶은 대로 분다. 너는 그 소리를 듣고도 어디서 불어와서 어디로 가는지를 모른다. 성령으로 난 사람은 누구든지 이와 마찬가지다." 예수께서 이렇게 대답하시자
- 니고데모는 다시 "어떻게 그런 일이 있을 수가 있겠습니까?" 하고 물었다.
- 예수께서는 다시 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "너는 이스라엘의 이름난 선생이면서 이런 것들을 모르느냐?

- That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
- Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
- The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
- Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
- Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?

- 정말 잘 들어두어라. 우리는 우리가 알고 있는 것을 말하고, 우리의 눈으로 본 것을 증언하는 것이다. 그런데도 너희는 우리의 증언을 받아들이지 않는다.
- 너희는 내가 이 세상 일을 말하는데도 믿지 않으면서 어떻게 하늘의 일을 두고 하는 말을 믿겠느냐?
- 하늘에서 내려온 사람의 아들 외에는 아무도 하늘에 올라간 일이 없다.
- 구리뱀이 광야에서 모세의 손에 높이 들렸던 것처럼 사람의 아들도 높이 들려야 한다.
- 그것은 그를 믿는 사람은 누구나 영원한 생명을 누리게 하려는 것이다.

- Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
- If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
- And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
- And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
- That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

- 하느님은 이 세상을 극진히 사랑하셔서 외아들을 보내주시어 그를 믿는 사람은 누구든지 멸망하지 않고 영원한 생명을 얻게 하여주셨다.
- 하느님이 아들을 세상에 보내신 것은 세상을 단죄하시려는 것이 아니라 아들을 시켜 구원하시려는 것이다.
- 그를 믿는 사람은 죄인으로 판결받지 않으나 믿지 않는 사람은 이미 죄인으로 판결을 받았다. 하느님의 외아들을 믿지 않았기 때문이다.
- 빛이 세상에 왔지만 사람들은 자기들의 행실이 악하여 빛보다 어둠을 더 사랑했다. 이것이 벌써 죄인으로 판결받았다는 것을 말해 준다.
- 과연 악한 일을 일삼는 자는 누구나 자기 죄상이 드러날까봐 빛을 미워하고 멀리한다.

- For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
- For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
- He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
- And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
- For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

- 그러나 진리를 따라 사는 사람은 빛이 있는 데로 나아간다. 그리하여 그가 한 일은 모두 하느님의 뜻을 따라 한 일이라는 것이 드러나게 된다."

- But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
