- 한편 예루살렘 사람들 중에서 더러는 "유다인들이 죽이려고 찾는 사람이 바로 이 사람이 아닌가?
- 저렇게 대중 앞에서 거침없이 말하고 있는데도 말 한마디 못하는 것을 보면 혹시 우리 지도자들이 그를 정말 그리스도로 아는 것이 아닐까?
- 그러나 그리스도가 오실 때에는 어디서 오시는지 아무도 모를 터인데 우리는 이 사람이 어디에서 왔는지 다 알고 있지 않은가?" 하고 말하였다.
- 그 때 예수께서는 성전에서 가르치시면서 큰소리로 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "너희는 나를 알고 있으며 내가 어디에서 왔는지도 알고 있다. 그러나 나는 내 마음대로 온 것이 아니다. 나를 보내신 분은 정녕 따로 계신다. 너희는 그분을 모르지만
- 나는 알고 있다. 나는 그분에게서 왔고 그분은 나를 보내셨다."

- Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?
- But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?
- Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.
- Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that sent me is true, whom ye know not.
- But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.

- 그러자 그들은 예수를 잡고 싶었으나 그에게 손을 대는 사람은 하나도 없었다. 예수의 때가 아직 이르지 않았던 것이다.
- 그러나 군중 가운데는 "그리스도가 정말 온다 해도 이분보다 더 많은 기적을 보여줄 수 있겠는가?" 하며 예수를 믿는 사람이 많았다.
- 사람들이 예수를 두고 이렇게 수군거리는 소리를 바리사이파 사람들이 들었다. 그래서 그들과 사제들은 예수를 잡아오라고 성전 경비병들을 보냈다.
- 그 때 예수께서는 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "내가 아직 얼마 동안은 너희와 같이 있겠지만 결국 나를 보내신 분에게 돌아가야 한다.
- 너희는 나를 찾아다녀도 찾지 못할 것이다. 내가 가 있는 곳에는 올 수가 없다."

- Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.
- And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?
- The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.
- Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.
- Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.

- 유다인들은 이 말씀을 듣고 "우리가 자기를 찾아내지 못하리라고 하는데 도대체 어디로 가겠다는 말인가? 이방인들 사이에 흩어져 사는 유다인들에게 가서 이방인들을 가르칠 셈인가?
- 우리가 자기를 찾아도 찾아내지 못한다느니 또는 자기가 있는 곳에는 올 수 없다느니 하는 말은 대관절 무슨 뜻일까?" 하고 수군거렸다.
- 그 명절의 고비가 되는 마지막 날에 예수께서는 일어서서 이렇게 외치셨다. "목마른 사람은 다 나에게 와서 마셔라.
- 나를 믿는 사람은 성서의 말씀대로 그 속에서 샘솟는 물이 강물처럼 흘러 나올 것이다."
- 이것은 예수께서 당신을 믿는 사람들이 받을 성령을 가리켜 하신 말씀이었다. 그 때는 예수께서 영광을 받지 않으셨기 때문에 성령이 아직 사람들에게 와 계시지 않으셨던 것이다.

- Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?
- What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?
- In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
- He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
- (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

- 이 말씀을 들은 사람들 중에는 "저분은 분명히 그 예언자이시다."
- 또는 "저분은 그리스도이시다." 하고 말하는 사람들이 있는가 하면 어떤 사람들은 "그리스도가 갈릴래아에서 나올 리가 있겠는가?
- 성서에도 그리스도는 다윗의 자손으로 다윗이 살던 동네 베들레헴에서 태어나리라고 하지 않았느냐?" 하고 말했다.
- 이렇게 군중은 예수 때문에 서로 갈라졌다.
- 몇 사람은 예수를 잡아가고 싶어하였지만 예수께 손을 대는 사람은 하나도 없었다.

- Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is the Prophet.
- Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come out of Galilee?
- Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?
- So there was a division among the people because of him.
- And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.

- 성전 경비병들이 그대로 돌아온 것을 보고 대사제들과 바리사이파 사람들은 "어찌하여 그를 잡아오지 않았느냐?" 하고 물었다.
- 경비병들은 "저희는 이제까지 그분처럼 말하는 사람은 본 적이 없습니다." 하고 대답하였다.
- 이 말을 들은 바리사이파 사람들은 "너희마저 속아 넘어갔느냐?
- 우리 지도자들이나 바리사이파 사람들 중에 단 한 사람이라도 그를 믿는 사람을 보았느냐?
- 도대체 율법도 모르는 이 따위 무리는 저주받을 족속이다." 하고 말하였다.

- Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?
- The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.
- Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?
- Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?
- But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.

- 그 자리에는 전에 예수를 찾아왔던 니고데모도 끼여 있었는데 그는
- "도대체 우리 율법에 먼저 그 사람의 말을 들어보거나 그가 한 일을 알아보지도 않고 죄인으로 단정하는 법이 어디 있소?" 하고 한마디 하였다.
- 그러자 그들은 "당신도 갈릴래아 사람이란 말이오? 성서를 샅샅이 뒤져보시오. 갈릴래아에서 예언자가 나온다는 말은 없소." 하고 핀잔을 주었다.
- (그리고 나서 사람들은 모두 집으로 돌아갔고

- Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,)
- Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?
- They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.
- And every man went unto his own house.
