	사무엘상 11:1-13:23 왕으로 선출되었으나 명목상의 왕에 불과하던 사울은 길르앗 야베스 전투에서 승리함으로 왕권을 확립하였다. 사무엘은 백성들에게 고별 설교를 통해 그들의 잘못을 지적하며, 오직 하나님을 경외할 것을 권고했다. 블레셋과의 전투에 임한 사울이 전세가 위급한 가운데 하나님께 잘못된 제사를 드리자 사무엘은 그의 왕권이 길지 못할 것을 예고했다.

	사울의 야베스 구원(11:1-11:15)

한 달쯤 지나 암몬 사람 나하스가 야베스 길르앗을 공격, 포위하였다. 그러자 야베스 사람들이 나하스에게 "그러지 말고 우리와 조약을 맺읍시다. 우리가 당신을 섬기겠습니다." 하고 제의하였다.

그러나 암몬 사람 나하스는 "조약을 맺는 데 한 가지 조건이 있다. 내가 너희의 오른쪽 눈알을 빼내어 온 이스라엘을 욕보일 터인데 그래도 좋으냐?" 하고 퉁기었다.

야베스의 장로들이 사정하였다. "우리가 이스라엘 곳곳에 전갈을 보낼 수 있도록 칠 일간만 여유를 주십시오. 그래도 우리를 구하러 오는 자가 없으면 항복하겠습니다."

이리하여 그 전갈은 사울이 사는 기브아에도 다다랐다. 소식을 전해 들은 사람들은 모두 목놓아 울었다.

마침 사울이 소를 몰고 들에서 들어오다가 그 광경을 보고 우는 이유를 묻자, 사람들이 야베스에서 온 전갈을 들려주었다.

Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.

Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.

이 말을 듣는 순간 하느님의 기운이 임하여 사울은 크게 분기가 치솟았다.

사울은 겨릿소 한 쌍을 끌어다가 각을 떠 이스라엘 전지역에 보내면서 "누구든지 사울과 사무엘을 따라 나서지 않는 자는 이 모양이 되리라." 하고 전하게 하였다. 그러자 백성들은 주를 두려워하며 일제히 따라 나섰다.

사울이 베젝에서 그들을 점호해 보니 이스라엘 사람이 삼십만, 유다 사람이 삼만이었다.

사울이 야베스 길르앗에서 전갈을 가지고 왔던 사람들에게 일렀다. "가서 사람들에게, 햇볕이 한창 내리쬘 때까지는 승리의 개가를 올리리라고 전하여라." 이 전갈을 받고 야베스 사람들은 매우 기뻐하였다.

그리고 나하스에게는 이렇게 말해 두었다. "내일 당신들한테 항복하러 나가겠습니다. 그 때에 가서 우리를 마음대로 하십시오."

And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.

이튿날 새벽녘에 사울은 군인들을 삼군으로 나누어, 적의 진지 한복판으로 곧장 쳐들어가서 햇볕이 내리쬘 때까지 암몬 군을 무찔렀다. 살아 남은 자들은 뿔뿔이 흩어져 도망쳤다.

백성들이 사무엘에게 "사울 따위가 우리 임금이 되겠느냐고 하던 자들이 누군지, 그런 자들은 죽여버리겠습니다. 허락해 주십시오." 하고 요구하였다.

그러나 사울은 "안 될 말이오. 야훼께서 이스라엘에 승리를 안겨주신 이 날에 사형이 웬 말이오?" 하며 허락하지 않았다.

사무엘이 백성에게 "자, 길갈로 가서 즉위식을 올립시다." 하고 말하자

백성들은 모두 길갈로 올라가 사울을 야훼 앞에서 왕으로 모시고 거기에서 야훼께 친교제를 드렸다. 사울과 이스라엘 모든 사람이 크게 기뻐하였다.

And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.

Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

	사무엘의 고별사(12:1-12:25)

사무엘이 이스라엘 사람들에게 말하였다. "보아라, 나는 너희가 원하는 대로 너희를 다스릴 임금을 세웠다.

이제부터는 이분이 임금으로서 너희를 이끄실 것이다. 나는 이렇게 늙어 백발이 되었고 내 아들들도 너희와 함께 있다. 나는 젊어서부터 이 날까지 너희를 이끌어왔다.

이제 나에게 무슨 불만이 있거든 야훼께서 계시는 이 자리, 그가 세우신 임금 앞에서 털어놓아라. 내가 누구의 소를 빼앗은 적이 있느냐? 누구의 나귀를 빼앗은 적이 있느냐? 내가 누구를 억압하고 누구를 착취한 일이 있느냐? 누구에게 뇌물을 받고 눈감아준 일이 있느냐? 그런 일이 있으면 다 갚으리라."

그들이 "우리를 억압하신 적도, 착취하신 적도 없습니다. 아무에게서도 무엇 하나 빼앗으신 적이 없습니다." 하고 대답하자

사무엘이 그들에게 다짐하였다. "너희는 내 손에서 아무런 부정도 찾지 못했다고 하였다. 이 날 야훼께서 이 일의 증인이 되셨고, 그가 기름 부어 세우신 임금도 증인이 되셨다." 백성들이 "그렇습니다." 하고 대답하였다.

And Samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king over you.

And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day.

Behold, here I am: witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.

And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man's hand.

And he said unto them, The LORD is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found ought in my hand. And they answered, He is witness.

사무엘이 백성에게 말하였다. "그렇다. 모세와 아론을 내세워 너희 조상을 이집트에서 이끌어내신 야훼께서 증인이시다.

그러니 이제 나서거라. 내가 야훼께서 너희와 너희 조상들에게 해주신 고마운 일을 낱낱이 들어 야훼 앞에서 너희와 따질 일이 있다.

야곱이 그의 후손들을 거느리고 이집트로 내려간 뒤, 너희 조상인 그들이 이집트인의 학대에 못 이겨 야훼께 울부짖자 야훼께서는 모세와 아론을 보내시어 이집트에서 너희 조상을 이끌어내시어 이 곳에 정착시키셨다.

그러나 그들은 자기 하느님 야훼를 저버렸기 때문에 야훼께서는 그들을 하솔 왕 야빈의 사령관 시스라와 불레셋 사람들과 모압 왕에게 공격을 받도록 하셨다.

그러자 너희 조상은 야훼께 호소하였다. '우리가 죄를 지었습니다. 우리는 야훼를 저버리고 바알과 아스다롯을 섬겼습니다. 이제 우리를 원수들의 손아귀에서 건져주십시오. 그러면 우리가 당신을 섬기겠습니다.'

And Samuel said unto the people, It is the LORD that advanced Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.

Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the LORD of all the righteous acts of the LORD, which he did to you and to your fathers.

When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers cried unto the LORD, then the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place.

And when they forgat the LORD their God, he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.

And they cried unto the LORD, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken the LORD, and have served Baalim and Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.

그래서 야훼께서는 여룹바알, 바락, 입다, 삼손을 보내시어 에워싼 원수들의 손아귀에서 너희를 건져내시고 안심하고 살게 해주셨다.

그런데 너희는 암몬 왕 나하스가 너희를 치러 오는 것을 보고는 야훼 너희 하느님께서 너희 왕이신데도 나에게 '안 되겠습니다. 차라리 왕을 세워 우리를 다스리게 해주십시오.' 하고 요구하였다.

이제 너희가 요구하던 왕, 너희가 뽑아 세운 왕이 여기 있다. 야훼께서 너희를 다스리도록 세우신 왕이다.

만일 너희가 야훼를 두려워하여 그를 섬기며 그의 말씀을 듣고 그의 명령을 거역하지 아니하고 또 너희뿐 아니라 너희를 다스리는 왕이 야훼 너희 하느님의 뒤를 따르면 좋으려니와

너희가 야훼의 말씀을 듣지 않고 그의 명령을 거역한다면 야훼께서 손을 들어 너희와 너희 왕을 치실 것이다.

And the LORD sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelled safe.

And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the LORD your God was your king.

Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired! and, behold, the LORD hath set a king over you.

If ye will fear the LORD, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the LORD your God:

But if ye will not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall the hand of the LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers.

이제 너희는 서서 야훼께서 너희 눈앞에 해보이시는 놀라운 일을 지켜보아라.

지금은 밀을 거두는 때가 아니냐? 내가 야훼를 불러 아뢰면 야훼께서 천둥과 함께 비를 내리시리라. 너희가 그것을 보고 야훼 앞에서 왕을 세워달라고 한 일이 얼마나 큰 죄인지 깨닫게 될 것이다."

사무엘이 야훼께 아뢰자 그 날로 야훼께서 천둥과 함께 비를 내리셨다. 온 백성이 야훼와 사무엘을 매우 두려워하게 되었다.

온 백성이 사무엘에게 호소하였다. "당신의 하느님 야훼께 기도드려, 당신의 종인 우리들로 하여금 죽지 않게 해주십시오. 우리가 이미 저지른 죄도 모자라 왕을 세워달라는 못된 짓을 더하였습니다."

사무엘이 백성에게 일렀다. "두려워하지 마라. 비록 너희가 못할 일을 했지만, 앞으로는 야훼를 떠나지 말고 성심껏 야훼를 섬기도록 하여라.

Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which the LORD will do before your eyes.

Is it not wheat harvest to day? I will call unto the LORD, and he shall send thunder and rain; that ye may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking you a king.

So Samuel called unto the LORD; and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.

And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.

And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart;

허수아비들을 따르지 마라. 그것들은 너희를 도울 수도, 건져줄 수도 없는 헛된 것들이다.

야훼께서는 너희를 당신의 백성으로 삼기로 하셨다. 당신의 높으신 이름에 욕이 돌아가지 않게 하기 위하여 너희를 버리시지 않으실 것이다.

나도 너희를 위하여 기도하리라. 기도하지 않는 죄를 야훼께 짓는 일은 결코 없으리라. 나는 너희에게 무엇이 좋고 바른 일인지를 가르쳐주리라.

야훼께서 너희에게 놀라운 일을 해보이셨으니, 너희는 야훼를 두려워하며 거짓 없이 성심으로 그를 섬겨야 한다.

그러나 만일 여전히 못된 짓을 한다면 너희와 너희 임금이 모두 망할 것이다."

And turn ye not aside: for then should ye go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain.

For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name's sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his people.

Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:

Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.

But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye and your king.

	사무엘의 책망(13:1-13:23)

사울은 이스라엘에서 삼천 명을 뽑아 그 가운데서 이천 명은 자기가 몸소 거느려 믹마스와 베델 산악 지대에 주둔하고, 천 명은 요나단에게 맡겨 베냐민 지방 게바에 주둔시켰다. 나머지 군대는 모두 집으로 돌려보냈다.

요나단은 기브아에 있는 불레셋 수비대를 쳤다. 그리하여 불레셋 사람들 사이에 히브리인들이 반기를 들었다는 소문이 퍼졌다. 한편 사울은 나팔을 불어 방방곡곡에 소집령을 내렸다.

이스라엘 온 국민은 사울이 불레셋 수비대를 쳐서 불레셋 사람들의 원한을 사게 되었다는 말을 듣고 길갈로 모여와 사울과 합세하였다.

불레셋 군도 이스라엘과 싸우려고 모였다. 그들은 병거가 삼천, 기마가 육천이나 되었고 보병은 바닷가의 모래알처럼 셀 수 없이 많았다. 그들은 베다웬 동편 믹마스에 올라가 거기에 진을 쳤다.

Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,

Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.

And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.

And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.

And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Bethaven.

이스라엘 군은 전세가 불리한 것을 보고 저마다 굴이나 바위틈이나 구덩이나 웅덩이를 찾아 몸을 숨겼고,

더러는 요르단 여울을 건너 가드와 길르앗 지방으로 달아났다. 사울은 길갈에 남아 있었는데 그를 따르는 군대는 모두 떨고 있었다.

사울은 사무엘을 만나려고 칠 일을 기다렸으나 사무엘은 길갈에 나타나지 않았다. 군인들은 하나 둘 사울 곁을 떠나기 시작하였다.

사울은 기다리다 못하여 번제물과 친교제물을 가져오라고 하여 번제를 드렸다.

사울이 번제를 막 드리고 나자 사무엘이 왔다. 사울이 마중나가 인사하자 사무엘은

When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.

And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.

And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.

And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.

"이게 도대체 무슨 일이오?" 하며 꾸짖었다. 사울이 대답하였다. "군인들은 하나 둘 도망치고 선생님은 정하신 때에 오지 않으시는데다가 불레셋 군은 믹마스에 집결해 있어

야훼의 노여움을 풀어드리기도 전에 불레셋 군이 길갈로 쳐 내려올 것 같아서 부득이 번제를 드렸습니다."

사무엘이 다시 사울을 꾸짖었다. "그대는 어리석은 짓을 하였소. 어찌하여 그대의 하느님 야훼께서 내리신 분부를 지키지 않았소? 지키기만 했더라면 야훼께서 이스라엘을 다스릴 그대의 왕조를 길이 길이 세워주실 터인데,

이제 그대의 대는 더 이어가지 못할 것이오. 그대가 야훼의 분부를 지키지 않았으니, 야훼께서는 당신의 마음에 드는 사람을 다시 찾아 당신의 백성을 다스릴 수령으로 세우실 것이오."

그리고 나서 사무엘은 일어나 길갈을 등지고 산 쪽으로 올라가 버렸다. 사울은 나머지 군대를 이끌고 길갈에서 적군 쪽으로 이동하였다. 사울이 베냐민 지방 게바로 올라가 병력을 점검하여 보니 육백 명밖에 되지 않았다.

And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;

Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.

And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.

But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.

사울과 그의 아들 요나단이 거느린 군대는 베냐민 지방 게바에서 믹마스에 진을 친 불레셋 군과 대진하였다.

불레셋 진영에서는 기습부대가 셋으로 나뉘어 출동하였다. 한 부대는 수알 지방 오브라 쪽으로 향하고

다른 한 부대는 벳호론 쪽으로, 나머지 한 부대는 스보임 골짜기를 굽어보고 광야가 바라보이는 지역으로 향하였다.

그 당시 이스라엘에는 대장장이가 한 명도 없었다. 불레셋이 히브리인들에게 칼이나 창 같은 것을 만들지 못하게 했던 것이다.

그래서 이스라엘 사람들은 보습이나 곡괭이나 도끼나 낫을 벼리려면 불레셋 사람이 사는 데로 내려가지 않으면 안 되었다.

And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.

And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:

And another company turned the way to Bethhoron: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:

But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.

보습이나 곡괭이를 벼리는 값은 삼분의 이 세겔이었고 도끼를 벼리고 낫을 가는 값은 십분의 일 세겔이었다.

그래서 그 전쟁이 터졌을 때 사울과 요나단을 따르는 무리에게는 칼도 창도 없었다. 무기를 가진 사람은 사울과 그의 아들 요나단뿐이었다.

불레셋 군의 전초부대는 믹마스로 건너가는 길목까지 나와 있었다.

Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.

So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.

And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.
