- 해가 바뀌는 때가 왕들이 싸움을 일으키는 때였다. 그 때가 되자 다윗은 요압에게 자기 부하 장교들과 이스라엘 전군을 맡겨 내보냈다. 그들은 암몬을 무찌르고 마침내 라빠를 포위하였다. 그러나 다윗은 예루살렘에 남아 있었다.
- 어느 날 저녁에 다윗은 침대에서 일어나 궁전 옥상을 거닐다가 목욕을 하고 있는 한 여인을 보게 되었다. 매우 아름다운 여인이었다.
- 다윗이 사령을 보내어 그 여인이 누구인지 알아보게 하니, 사령은 돌아와서 그 여인은 엘리암의 딸 바쎄바인데 남편은 헷 사람 우리야라고 보고하였다.
- 다윗은 사령을 보내어 그 여인을 데려다가 정을 통하고는 돌려 보냈다. 여인은 마침 부정을 씻고 몸이 정결한 때였다.
- 바쎄바의 몸에 태기가 있게 되었다. 그래서 다윗에게 자기가 임신했다는 것을 알렸다.

- And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.
- And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
- And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
- And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.
- And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

- 그러자 다윗은 요압에게 사람을 보내어 헷 사람 우리야를 자기에게 보내라고 하였다. 요압이 우리야를 다윗에게 보냈다.
- 우리야가 당도하자 다윗은 요압과 병사들의 안부를 묻고 싸움터의 형편도 알아보고 나서
- 집에 돌아가 푹 쉬라고 하였다. 우리야가 어전에서 물러나올 때 왕은 술상까지 딸려 보냈다.
- 그러나 우리야는 집으로 가지 아니하고 대궐 문간에서 근위병들과 함께 잤다.
- 다음날 다윗은 우리야가 집에 돌아가 자지 않았다는 말을 듣고 우리야에게 물었다. "그대는 먼 길에서 돌아온 몸이 아닌가? 그런데 어찌하여 집에 내려가 보지 않았는가?"

- And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.
- And when Uriah was come unto him, David demanded of him how Joab did, and how the people did, and how the war prospered.
- And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess of meat from the king.
- But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.
- And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then didst thou not go down unto thine house?

- 우리야가 다윗에게 대답하였다. "온 이스라엘 군과 유다 군이 야영 중입니다. 법궤도 거기에 있습니다. 제 상관 요압 장군이나 임금님의 부하들도 들판에 진을 치고 있습니다. 그런데 저만 집에 가서 편히 쉬며 먹고 마시고 아내와 더불어 밤을 지내다니, 도저히 그렇게는 할 수 없습니다."
- 다윗은 "그럼 오늘은 여기에서 지내도록 하오." 하며 우리야에게 내일은 돌아가게 해주겠다고 말했다. 우리야는 그 날도 예루살렘에서 묵었다.
- 다음날 다윗은 우리야를 불러들여 한 식탁에서 먹고 마시게 하여 그를 흠뻑 취하게 만들었다. 우리야는 그 날 저녁에도 어전에서 물러나와 집으로 돌아가지 아니하고 근위병들과 함께 잤다.
- 날이 밝자 다윗은 요압 앞으로 편지를 써서 우리야에게 주어 보냈다.
- 다윗은 그 편지에 이렇게 썼다. "우리야를 가장 전투가 심한 곳에 앞세워 내보내고 너희는 뒤로 물러나서 그를 맞아죽게 하여라."

- And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.
- And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to day also, and to morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.
- And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.
- And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
- And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.

- 요압은 성을 지켜보고 있다가 강병이 지키고 있는 데를 알아내어 그 곳으로 우리야를 보냈다.
- 그러자 그 성에서 적군이 나와 요압의 군대를 쳤다. 다윗의 부하들은 쓰러지고 헷 사람 우리야도 죽었다.
- 요압은 다윗에게 전황을 보고할 전령을 보내면서
- 이렇게 지시하였다. "이번 싸움의 보고를 드리면,
- 왕께서 화를 내시며 '어쩌자고 그렇게까지 성에 가까이 쳐들어갔었느냐? 성벽에서 화살이 날아올 줄도 몰랐느냐?

- And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were.
- And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.
- Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;
- And charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling the matters of the war unto the king,
- And if so be that the king's wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nigh unto the city when ye did fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?

- 여룹베셋의 아들 아비멜렉이 누구의 손에 죽었느냐? 데베스 성벽 위에서 어느 하잘것없는 한 계집이 내려 던진 맷돌에 맞아 죽지 않았느냐? 그런데 어찌하여 성벽 가까이 갔었느냐?' 하고 꾸짖으실 것이다. 그 때 너는 왕의 부하 헷 사람 우리야도 죽었다고 아뢰어라."
- 전령은 길을 떠나 다윗에게 와서 요압이 이른 대로 보고하였다. 그러자 다윗은 화를 내며 전령에게 호통을 쳤다. "어찌하여 그렇게까지 성에 가까이 쳐들어갔었느냐? 적군이 성벽에서 화살을 쏘아댈 줄도 몰랐더냐? 여룹베셋의 아들 아비멜렉이 누구의 손에 죽었느냐? 데베스 성벽 위에서 한 계집이 내려 던진 맷돌에 맞아 죽지 않았느냐? 그런데 어찌하여 그렇게까지 성에 가까이 갔었느냐?"
- 전령이 왕에게 대답하였다. "적군이 들에까지 나와 우리를 몰아대기에 우리도 마주나가 놈들을 쫓다 보니 성문 가까이까지 쳐들어가게 되었습니다.
- 그 때 성 위에서 활을 쏘아대는 바람에 임금님의 근위병도 몇이 죽었고 임금님의 부하인 헷 사람 우리야도 죽었습니다."
- 이 말을 듣고 다윗은 전령에게 말하였다. "요압에게 돌아가거든, '전장에서는 누구든지 죽을 수 있는 것이니, 이 일로 걱정하지 말고 힘을 다하여 기어이 그 성을 공격하여 함락시키시오.' 하고 일러라." 이런 말로 그에게 용기를 주라고 하였다.

- Who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? why went ye nigh the wall? then say thou, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
- So the messenger went, and came and shewed David all that Joab had sent him for.
- And the messenger said unto David, Surely the men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entering of the gate.
- And the shooters shot from off the wall upon thy servants; and some of the king's servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
- Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.

- 우리야가 전사했다는 전갈을 받고 그의 아내는 남편을 위하여 곡을 했다.
- 곡하는 기간이 지난 다음, 다윗은 예를 갖추어 그 여인을 궁으로 맞아들여 아내로 삼았는데, 그의 몸에서 아들이 태어났다. 다윗이 한 이 일이 야훼의 눈에 거슬렸다.

- And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.
- And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.
