- 이 무렵 신도들의 수효가 점점 늘어나게 되자 그리스 말을 쓰는 유다인들이 본토 유다인들에게 불평을 터뜨리게 되었다. 그것은 그들의 과부들이 그날 그날의 식량을 배급받을 때마다 푸대접을 받았기 때문이었다.
- 그래서 열두 사도가 신도들을 모두 불러놓고 이렇게 말하였다. "우리가 하느님의 말씀을 전하는 일은 제쳐놓고 식량 배급에만 골몰하는 것은 옳지 못합니다.
- 그러니 형제 여러분, 여러분 가운데서 신망이 두텁고 성령과 지혜가 충만한 사람 일곱을 뽑아내시오. 이 일은 그들에게 맡기고
- 우리는 오직 기도와 전도하는 일에만 힘쓰겠습니다."
- 모든 신도들은 이 말에 찬동하여 믿음과 성령이 충만한 사람 스데파노와 필립보와 브로코로와 니가노르와 디몬과 바르메나와 또 안티오키아 출신으로 유다교로 개종한 니골라오를 뽑아

- And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.
- Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.
- Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.
- But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.
- And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:

- 사도들 앞에 내세웠다. 사도들은 기도하고 그들에게 안수하였다.
- 하느님의 말씀이 널리 퍼지고 예루살렘에서는 신도들의 수효가 부쩍 늘어났으며 수많은 사제들도 예수를 믿게 되었다.
- 스데파노는 하느님의 은총과 성령의 힘을 가득히 받아 백성들 앞에서 놀라운 일들과 굉장한 기적들을 행하고 있었다.
- 그 때 이른바 "자유인의 회당"에 소속된 키레네와 알렉산드리아 사람들과 길리기아와 아시아에서 온 사람들이 일어나 스데파노와 논쟁을 벌였다.
- 그러나 그들은 지혜와 성령을 받아 말하는 스데파노를 당해 낼 도리가 없었다.

- Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.
- And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.
- And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.
- Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.
- And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

- 그래서 그들은 사람들을 매수하여 "우리는 스데파노가 모세와 하느님을 모독하는 것을 들었습니다." 하고 말하게 하였다.
- 그리고 백성과 원로들과 율법학자들을 선동하여 스데파노에게 몰려가서 그를 잡아 의회로 끌어오게 하였다.
- 또한 거짓 증인들을 내세워 "이 사람은 언제나 이 거룩한 곳과 율법을 거슬러 말하고 있습니다.
- 우리는 늘 이 사람에게서 나자렛 예수가 이 성전을 헐고 또 모세가 전해 준 관습을 뜯어고칠 것이라고 하는 말을 들었습니다." 하고 말하게 하였다.
- 그러자 의회에 앉았던 사람들의 시선은 모두 스데파노에게 쏠렸다. 그의 얼굴은 마치 천사와 같이 보였다.

- Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.
- And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,
- And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:
- For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.
- And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.
