- 이 무렵 헤로데 왕이 교회의 어떤 사람들에게 박해의 손을 뻗쳐
- 우선 요한의 형 야고보를 잘라 죽였다.
- 유다인들이 좋아하는 것을 보고 이번에는 또 베드로를 잡아오라고 하였다. 그 때는 바로 무교절 기간이었다.
- 그는 베드로를 잡아서 감옥에 가두고 네 사람으로 편성된 네 패의 경비병에게 맡겨 지키게 하였다. 과월절이 지나면 그를 유다인들 앞에 끌어낼 속셈이었던 것이다.
- 이렇게 되어 베드로는 감옥에 갇혀 있었고 교회는 그를 위하여 하느님께 줄곧 기도를 드렸다.

- Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.
- And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.
- And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)
- And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.
- Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

- 헤로데가 베드로를 유다인들 앞에 끌어내려고 하던 그 전날 밤의 일이었다. 베드로는 두 개의 쇠사슬에 묶인 채 군인 두 사람 사이에서 잠을 자고 있었고 감옥 문 앞에는 경비병들이 지키고 있었다.
- 그런데 갑자기 주의 천사가 나타나 베드로 앞에 서자 환한 빛이 감방을 비추었다. 천사가 베드로의 옆구리를 찔러 깨우며 "빨리 일어나라." 하고 재촉하였다. 그러자 곧 쇠사슬이 그의 두 손목에서 벗겨졌다.
- "허리띠를 띠고 신을 신어라." 하는 천사의 말을 듣고 베드로는 그대로 하였다. 그랬더니 천사는 "겉옷을 걸치고 나를 따라오너라." 하였다.
- 베드로는 천사를 따라 나가면서도 천사가 하는 일이 현실이 아니고 환상이려니 하였다.
- 그들이 첫째 초소와 둘째 초소를 지나 거리로 통하는 철문 앞에 다다르자 문이 저절로 열렸다. 그래서 천사와 함께 밖으로 나와 거리의 한 구간을 지나자 천사는 어느새 사라져버렸다.

- And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.
- And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.
- And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.
- And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.
- When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.

- 그제야 베드로가 정신이 나서 "나는 이제야 사실을 알았다. 주께서 천사를 보내셔서 헤로데의 손에서 나를 건지시고 유다 백성들이 잔뜩 꾸민 흉계에서 나를 벗어나게 하셨다." 하고 말하였다.
- 이 사실을 깨달은 베드로는 마르코라고도 불리는 요한의 어머니 마리아의 집으로 갔다. 거기에는 많은 사람이 모여 기도를 드리고 있었다.
- 베드로가 대문을 두드리자 로데라는 어린 여종이 문간으로 나왔다.
- 그 여종은 베드로의 목소리를 알아듣고 너무 기뻐서 문을 열어줄 생각도 않고 안으로 달려 들어가 베드로가 대문 밖에 와 있다고 알려주었다.
- 그 말을 듣고 모두 그 여종에게 "너 미쳤구나!" 하였지만 로데는 베드로가 정말 대문 밖에 와 있다고 우겼다. 그래도 사람들은 "베드로를 지켜주는 천사겠지." 하고 말하였다.

- And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the LORD hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.
- And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.
- And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.
- And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.
- And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.

- 베드로가 계속해서 문을 두드리자 그들은 문을 열어보고 정말 베드로가 온 것을 알고는 깜짝 놀랐다.
- 베드로는 그들에게 조용히 하라고 손짓을 한 다음 주께서 자기를 감옥에서 인도해 내신 경위를 말해 주었다. 그리고 이 소식을 야고보와 다른 교우들에게 알리라고 하고는 다른 곳으로 떠나갔다.
- 날이 밝자 군인들 사이에는 베드로가 없어졌기 때문에 큰 소동이 일어났다.
- 헤로데는 부하들을 풀어 베드로를 찾다가 끝내 못 찾게 되자 경비병들을 문초한 다음 그들을 대신 처형시켰다. 이 일이 있은 뒤에 헤로데는 유다를 떠나 가이사리아에 가서 얼마 동안 머물러 있었다.
- 한편 띠로와 시돈 사람들은 헤로데에게 몹시 미움을 사고 있었다. 그러나 그들의 지방은 헤로데의 영토에서 식량을 공급받고 있었기 때문에 뜻을 모아 헤로데를 찾아갔다. 우선 그의 시종 블라스토를 설득한 다음 그 힘을 빌려 헤로데에게 화평을 청하였다.

- But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.
- But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.
- Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.
- And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.
- And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king's country.

- 헤로데는 정한 날에 용포를 두르고 옥좌에 앉아 사람들에게 연설을 하였다.
- 그 때에 사람들이 "이것은 사람의 소리가 아니라 신의 소리다." 하고 외쳤다.
- 그러나 헤로데가 그 영광을 하느님께 돌리지 않았기 때문에 주의 천사가 곧 헤로데를 내리쳤다. 이리하여 그는 벌레에게 먹혀 죽어버리고 말았다.

- And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.
- And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.
- And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.
