- 그 무렵 유다에서 몇몇 사람이 안티오키아에 내려와 교우들에게 모세의 율법이 명하는 할례를 받지 않으면 구원을 받지 못한다고 가르치고 있었다.
- 그래서 바울로와 바르나바 두 사도와 그들 사이에 격렬한 의견 충돌과 논쟁이 벌어졌다. 그러다가 결국 교회는 바울로와 바르나바와 몇몇 신도들을 예루살렘에 보내어 다른 사도들과 원로들에게 이 문제를 의논하게 하였다.
- 그들은 교회의 전송을 받고 떠나 페니키아와 사마리아를 거쳐가면서 이방인들이 개종한 이야기를 들려주었다. 그리하여 그 곳 모든 교우들에게 큰 기쁨을 주었다.
- 예루살렘에 도착한 그들은 사도들과 원로들을 비롯한 온 교회의 환영을 받았다. 그리고 하느님께서 그들을 도와 이루어주신 일들을 모두 보고하였다.
- 그런데 바리사이파에 속했다가 신도가 된 사람 몇이 나서서 "이방인들에게도 할례를 주고 모세의 율법을 지키도록 일러주어야 합니다." 하고 말하였다.

- And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved.
- When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.
- And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.
- And when they were come to Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and of the apostles and elders, and they declared all things that God had done with them.
- But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

- 사도들과 원로들은 이 문제를 검토하려고 회의를 열었다.
- 오랜 토론 끝에 베드로가 일어나서 그들에게 이렇게 말하였다. "형제 여러분, 여러분이 아시는 바와 같이 하느님께서는 내 입을 빌려 이방인들도 복음을 듣고 믿게 하시려고 일찍이 여러분 가운데서 나를 뽑아주셨습니다.
- 그리고 사람의 마음속을 아시는 하느님께서는 성령을 그들에게도 내리셔서 우리와 똑같이 인정해 주셨습니다.
- 그리고 그들의 믿음을 보시고 그들의 마음을 깨끗하게 하셔서 우리와 그들 사이에 아무런 차별도 두지 않으셨습니다.
- 그런데 지금 여러분은 왜 우리의 조상들이나 우리가 다 감당하지 못했던 멍에를 그 신도들의 목에 메워서 하느님께서 하시는 일을 간섭하려 드는 것입니까?

- And the apostles and elders came together for to consider of this matter.
- And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.
- And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us;
- And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
- Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

- 그들의 경우와 마찬가지로 우리가 구원받는 것도 주 예수의 은총으로 되는 것이라고 믿습니다."
- 이 말을 듣고 온 회중은 조용해졌다. 그리고 바르나바와 바울로가 하느님께서 자기들을 통하여 이방인들 가운데서 행하신 여러 가지 기적과 놀라운 일들에 대하여 보고하는 것을 들었다.
- 두 사도가 말을 마치자 야고보가 나서서 이렇게 말하였다. "형제 여러분, 내가 한 말씀 드리겠습니다.
- 하느님께서 이방인들을 돌보시어 그들 가운데서 처음에 당신의 백성을 뽑아주시게 된 경위를 시몬이 말해 주었습니다.
- 이 사실은 예언자들의 말과도 일치합니다. 예언서에는 이렇게 기록되어 있습니다.

- But we believe that through the grace of the LORD Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.
- Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.
- And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me:
- Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.
- And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written,

- '그 뒤에 내가 다시 돌아와 무너진 다윗의 집을 다시 지으리니 허물어진 곳을 다시 고치고 그것을 바로 세우리라.
- 그리하여 살아 남은 백성들이 다 주를 찾고 내 백성이 된 모든 이방인들까지도 모두 주를 찾게 되리라.
- 오래 전부터 이것을 알게 해주시는 주께서 이렇게 말씀하신다.'
- 그러므로 내 의견은 하느님께로 돌아오는 이방인들을 괴롭힐 것이 아니라
- 다만 우상에게 바쳐서 더러워진 것을 먹지 말고 음란한 행동을 하지 말고 목 졸라 죽인 짐승의 고기와 피를 먹지 말라고 편지를 띄웠으면 합니다.

- After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:
- That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.
- Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.
- Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:
- But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.

- 예로부터 어느 도시에나 모세의 율법을 풀이하는 사람들이 있어서 그 율법을 안식일마다 회당에서 읽어왔습니다."
- 그래서 사도들과 원로들은 교회의 모든 신도들과 의논하여 대표들을 뽑아 바울로와 바르나바와 함께 안티오키아로 보내기로 작정하였다. 거기에서 뽑힌 사람들은 교우들 가운데서 지도적인 위치에 있던 바르사빠라는 유다와 실라였다.
- 그들이 이 사람들 편에 부친 편지는 다음과 같다. "여러분과 한 형제가 된 우리 사도와 원로들은 안티오키아와 시리아와 길리기아에 있는 이방인 형제들에게 문안을 드립니다.
- 우리 신도 중 몇몇이 여러분에게 가서 엉뚱한 말로 여러분을 괴롭히고 어리둥절하게 만들었다는 이야기를 들었는데 그것은 우리가 시킨 일이 아닙니다.
- 그래서 우리는 대표 몇을 뽑아 사랑하는 바르나바와 바울로와 함께 여러분에게 보내기로 뜻을 모았습니다.

- For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.
- Then pleased it the apostles and elders with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas and Silas, chief men among the brethren:
- And they wrote letters by them after this manner; The apostles and elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia.
- Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment:
- It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

- 그런데 이 바르나바와 바울로는 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 위하여 목숨을 내어놓은 사람들입니다.
- 이제 우리 대표로 가는 유다와 실라가 이 편지의 사연을 직접 말로도 전해 드릴 것입니다마는
- 다음 몇 가지 긴요한 사항 외에는 여러분에게 다른 짐을 더 지우지 않으려는 것이 성령과 우리의 결정입니다.
- 여러분은 우상에게 바쳤던 제물을 먹지 말고 피나 목 졸라 죽인 짐승도 먹지 마시오. 그리고 음란한 행동을 하지 마시오. 여러분이 이런 몇 가지만 삼가면 다 잘될 것입니다. 안녕히 계십시오."
- 그들 일행은 길을 떠나 안티오키아로 내려가서 회중을 다 모아놓고 그 편지를 전해 주었다.

- Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by mouth.
- For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;
- That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.
- So when they were dismissed, they came to Antioch: and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the epistle:

- 회중은 그 편지를 읽고 격려를 받았으며 또한 기뻐하였다.
- 예언자인 유다와 실라도 교우들을 여러 말로 격려하며 힘을 북돋아주었다.
- 그리고 거기에서 얼마 동안 지내다가 평안을 비는 교우들의 작별 인사를 받으며 그 곳을 떠나 자기들을 파견한 사람들에게로 돌아갔다.

- 그러나 바울로와 바르나바는 계속해서 안티오키아에 머물러 있으면서 다른 여러 사람들과 함께 주님의 말씀을 가르치고 전하였다.

- Which when they had read, they rejoiced for the consolation.
- And Judas and Silas, being prophets also themselves, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.
- And after they had tarried there a space, they were let go in peace from the brethren unto the apostles.
- Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still.
- Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.
