- 누구나 자기를 지배하는 권위에 복종해야 합니다. 하느님께서 주시지 않은 권위는 하나도 없고 세상의 모든 권위는 다 하느님께서 세워주신 것이기 때문입니다.
- 그러므로 권위를 거역하면 하느님께서 세워주신 것을 거스르는 자가 되고 거스르는 사람들은 심판을 받게 됩니다.
- 통치자들은 악을 행하는 자에게나 두려운 존재이지 선을 행하는 사람들에게는 두려울 것이 없습니다. 통치자를 두려워하지 않으려거든 선을 행하십시오. 그러면 그에게서 칭찬을 받을 것입니다.
- 통치자는 결국 여러분의 이익을 위해서 일하는 하느님의 심부름꾼입니다. 그러나 여러분이 잘못을 저지를 때에는 두려워해야 합니다. 그는 공연히 칼을 차고 있는 것이 아닙니다. 그는 하느님의 심부름꾼으로서 악을 행하는 자들에게 하느님의 벌을 대신 주는 사람입니다.
- 그러므로 하느님의 벌이 무서워서뿐만 아니라 자기 양심을 따르기 위해서도 권위에 복종해야 합니다.

- Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
- Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
- For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
- For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
- Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.

- 여러분이 여러 가지 세금을 내는 것도 이 때문입니다. 통치자들은 그와 같은 직무들을 수행하도록 하느님의 임명을 받은 일꾼들입니다.
- 그러므로 여러분은 그들에게 해야 할 의무를 다하십시오. 국세를 바쳐야 할 사람에게는 국세를 바치고 관세를 바쳐야 할 사람에게는 관세를 바치고 두려워해야 할 사람은 두려워하고 존경해야 할 사람은 존경하십시오.
- 남에게 해야 할 의무를 다하십시오. 그러나 아무리 해도 다할 수 없는 의무가 한 가지 있습니다. 그것은 사랑의 의무입니다. 남을 사랑하는 사람은 이미 율법을 완성했습니다.
- "간음하지 마라. 살인하지 마라. 도둑질하지 마라. 탐내지 마라." 한 계명이 있고 또 그 밖에도 다른 계명이 많이 있지만 그 모든 계명은 "네 이웃을 네 몸같이 사랑하여라." 한 이 한마디로 요약될 수 있습니다.
- 이웃을 사랑하는 사람은 이웃에게 해로운 일을 하지 않습니다. 그러므로 사랑한다는 것은 율법을 완성하는 일입니다.

- For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.
- Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
- Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
- For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
- Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

- 이렇게 살아야 하는 여러분은 지금이 어느 때인지를 알아야 합니다. 여러분이 잠에서 깨어나야 할 때가 왔습니다. 지금은 우리가 처음 믿던 때보다 우리의 구원이 더 가까이 다가왔습니다.
- 밤이 거의 새어 낮이 가까웠습니다. 그러니 어둠의 행실을 벗어버리고 빛의 갑옷을 입읍시다.
- 진탕 먹고 마시고 취하거나 음행과 방종에 빠지거나 분쟁과 시기를 일삼거나 하지 말고 언제나 대낮으로 생각하고 단정하게 살아갑시다.
- 주 예수 그리스도로 온몸을 무장하십시오. 그리고 육체의 정욕을 만족시키려는 생각은 아예 하지 마십시오.

- And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
- The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
- Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
- But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
