- 내가 자유인이 아니란 말입니까? 내가 사도가 아니란 말입니까? 내가 우리 주 예수를 뵙지 못했단 말입니까? 여러분은 바로 내가 주님을 위해서 일하여 얻은 열매가 아닙니까?
- 비록 내가 다른 사람들에게는 사도가 아닐지라도 여러분에게는 사도입니다. 주님을 믿는 여러분이야말로 내가 사도라는 것을 증명해 주는 확실한 표입니다.
- 나를 비판하는 사람들에게 나는 이렇게 답변합니다.
- 도대체 우리에게 먹고 마실 권리가 없단 말입니까?
- 우리라고 해서 다른 사도들이나 주님의 형제들이나 베드로처럼 그리스도를 믿는 아내를 데리고 다닐 권리가 없단 말입니까?

- Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?
- If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.
- Mine answer to them that do examine me is this,
- Have we not power to eat and to drink?
- Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?

- 혹은 나와 바르나바에게만 노동하지 않고 먹을 권리가 없단 말입니까?
- 자기 비용을 써가면서 군인 노릇을 하는 사람이 도대체 어디 있습니까? 누가 포도밭을 만들어놓고 그 밭에서 열매를 따 먹지 않겠습니까? 또 도대체 누가 양을 친다면서 그 젖을 짜 먹지 않겠습니까?
- 내가 단순히 인간의 경험만으로 이런 말을 하는 줄 아십니까? 율법도 이렇게 말하지 않습니까?
- 모세의 율법에 "타작 마당에서 일하는 소에게 망을 씌우지 마라."라고 기록되어 있습니다. 하느님께서 소를 걱정해서 하신 말씀이겠습니까?
- 아니면 우리들을 위해서 하신 말씀이겠습니까? 물론 우리를 위해서 기록해 두신 말씀입니다. 밭을 가는 사람이 희망을 가지고 일하고, 타작하는 사람이 자기 몫을 얻으리라는 희망을 가지고 일하는 것은 당연한 일입니다.

- Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?
- Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?
- Say I these things as a man? or saith not the law the same also?
- For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?
- Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.

- 우리가 여러분에게 영적인 씨를 심어주었는데 이제 여러분에게서 물질적인 것을 거둔다고 해서 그것이 지나친 일이겠습니까?
- 다른 사람들이 여러분에게서 거두어갈 권리를 가졌다면 우리에게는 더 큰 권리가 있지 않겠습니까? 그러나 우리는 이 권리를 행사하지 않았습니다. 오히려 그리스도의 복음을 전하는 데 조금이라도 방해가 되지 않도록 모든 것을 참고 지냈습니다.
- 성전에서 일하는 사람들은 성전에서 나오는 것을 먹고 살며 제단을 맡아보는 사람들은 제단 제물을 나누어가진다는 것을 모르십니까?
- 이와 같이 복음을 전하는 사람들도 그 일로 먹고 살 수 있도록 주님께서 제정해 주셨습니다.
- 그러나 나는 이런 권리를 조금도 써본 일이 없습니다. 또 내 권리를 주장하고 싶어서 이런 말을 하는 것도 아닙니다. 그러느니 차라리 죽는 것이 낫겠습니다. 내가 보수를 받지 않고 일한다는 이 긍지만은 아무도 빼앗지 못할 것입니다.

- If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?
- If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.
- Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?
- Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.
- But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.

- 내가 복음을 전한다 해서 그것이 나에게 자랑거리가 될 수는 없습니다. 그것은 내가 마땅히 해야 할 일이기 때문입니다. 만일 내가 복음을 전하지 않는다면 나에게 화가 미칠 것입니다.
- 만일 내가 내 자유로 이 일을 택해서 하고 있다면 응당 보수를 바랄 수 있을 것입니다. 그러나 사실은 내 자유로 택한 것이 아니라 하느님께서 그 일을 내 직무로 맡겨주신 것입니다.
- 그러니 나에게 무슨 보수가 있겠습니까? 보수가 있다면 그것은 내가 복음을 전하는 사람으로서 응당 받을 수 있는 것을 요구하지 않고 복음을 거저 전할 수 있다는 사실입니다.

- For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!
- For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.
- What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.
