- 그러므로 사랑하는 형제 여러분, 우상 숭배를 멀리하십시오.
- 여러분은 사리를 분별할 수 있는 사람들이니 내 말을 잘 판단해 보십시오.
- 우리가 감사를 드리면서 그 축복의 잔을 마시는 것은 우리가 그리스도의 피를 나누어 마시는 것이 아니겠습니까? 또 우리가 그 빵을 떼는 것은 그리스도의 몸을 나누어 먹는 것이 아니겠습니까?
- 빵은 하나이고 우리 모두가 그 한 덩어리의 빵을 나누어 먹는 사람들이니 비록 우리가 여럿이지만 모두 한 몸인 것입니다.
- 이스라엘 백성의 관습을 생각해 봅시다. 제물을 나누어 먹는 사람들은 모두 하느님의 제단에 참여하는 사람들이 아닙니까?

- Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.
- I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.
- The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
- For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.
- Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?

- 여러분은 이 말을 어떻게 알아들으십니까? 우상 앞에 놓았던 제물이나 우상 자체에 어떤 가치가 있다는 말이겠습니까?
- 아닙니다. 나는 이교도들이 바치는 제물이 하느님께 드리는 것이 아니라 마귀들에게 바치는 것이라는 말을 하려는 것입니다. 나는 여러분이 마귀들과 상종하는 자가 되지 않기를 바랍니다.
- 주님의 잔을 마시는 여러분이 마귀들의 잔을 마실 수는 없습니다. 또 주님의 식탁에 참여하는 여러분이 마귀들의 식탁에 참여할 수는 없습니다.
- 우리가 주님을 질투하게 해드려서야 되겠습니까? 우리가 주님보다 강하단 말입니까?
- 누구나 "나는 무슨 일이든지 할 자유가 있다." 하고 말할 수 있습니다. 그러나 무슨 일이든지 해서 다 유익한 것은 아닙니다. "나는 무슨 일이든지 할 자유가 있다." 하고 말할 수 있지만 모든 것이 다 사람에게 도움이 되는 것은 아닙니다.

- What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?
- But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.
- Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.
- Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
- All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

- 누구든지 자신의 이익을 구하지 말고 남의 이익을 도모해야 합니다.
- 시장에 나온 고기를 사 먹을 때에는 구태여 양심을 따지지 않아도 좋습니다.
- "땅도 주님의 것이요, 그 안에 가득히 있는 것도 다 주님의 것입니다."
- 어떤 교우 아닌 사람의 초청을 받아 그 집에 가거든 구태여 양심을 따지지 말고, 차려 내온 음식은 무엇이든지 잡수십시오.
- 그러나 누가 "이것은 우상 앞에 놓았던 음식입니다." 하고 일러주거든 그 말을 한 사람과 그의 양심을 위해서 먹지 마십시오.

- Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.
- Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:
- For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.
- If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.
- But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:

- 여기에서 양심이라고 하는 것은 자기 양심이 아니라 남의 양심을 말하는 것입니다. "왜 내 자유가 남의 양심 때문에 제약을 받아야 하느냐?
- 그리고 내가 하느님께 감사를 드리고 음식을 먹는데 감사를 드린 그 음식 때문에 내가 욕을 먹어야 할 이유가 무엇이냐?" 하고 반문할 사람이 있을지도 모르겠습니다.
- 그러나 여러분은 먹든지 마시든지 그리고 무슨 일을 하든지 모든 일을 오직 하느님의 영광을 위해서 하십시오.
- 여러분은 유다인에게나 그리스인에게나 하느님의 교회에나 어느 누구에게든지 양심의 가책을 받게 하는 일을 해서는 안 됩니다.
- 나도 무슨 일을 하든지 모든 사람을 기쁘게 하려고 애씁니다. 그것은 나 자신의 이익이 아니라 많은 사람들의 이익을 구하여 결국 그들을 구원하려는 것입니다.

- Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?
- For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?
- Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
- Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:
- Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
