- 내가 무슨 말을 더 하겠습니까? 기드온, 바락, 삼손, 옙타, 다윗, 사무엘, 그리고 예언자들의 이야기를 일일이 다 하자면 시간이 모자랄 것입니다.
- 그들은 믿음을 가지고 여러 나라를 정복하였고 정의를 실천하였고 약속해 주신 것을 받았고 사자의 입을 막았으며
- 맹렬한 불을 껐고 칼날을 피하였고 약했지만 강해졌고 전쟁에서 용맹을 떨쳤고 외국 군대를 물리쳤습니다.
- 죽었다가 다시 살아나서 돌아오는 식구들을 만난 여자들도 있습니다. 그러나 어떤 이들은 죽었다가 다시 살아나서 더 나은 생명을 누리려고 석방도 거부하고 고문을 달게 받았습니다.
- 또 어떤 이들은 조롱을 받고 채찍으로 얻어맞고 심지어는 결박을 당하여 감옥에 갇히기까지 하였습니다.

- And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
- Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions.
- Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
- Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:
- And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:

- 또 돌에 맞아 죽고 톱질을 당하고 칼에 맞아 죽기도 했습니다. 그리고 양과 염소의 가죽을 몸에 두르고 돌아다녔으며 가난과 고난과 학대를 겪기도 했습니다.
- 이런 사람들에게는 이 세상이 살 만한 곳이 되지 못했습니다. 그래서 그들은 광야와 산과 동굴과 땅굴로 헤매며 다녔습니다.
- 이 사람들은 모두 믿음이 있었기 때문에 하느님의 인정을 받았습니다. 그러나 약속된 것을 받지는 못했습니다.
- 하느님께서 우리를 위해서 더 좋은 것을 마련해 두셨기 때문에 그들은 우리를 제쳐놓고는 결코 완성에 이르지는 못하게 되어 있었던 것입니다.

- They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;
- (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
- And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:
- God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.
