- 여러분은 무엇 때문에 서로 싸우고 분쟁을 일으킵니까? 여러분의 지체 안에서 갈등을 일으키는 욕정에서 나오는 것이 아닙니까?
- 여러분은 욕심을 내다가 얻지 못하면 살인을 하고 남을 시기하다가 뜻을 이루지 못하면 싸우고 분쟁을 일으킵니다. 여러분이 얻지 못하는 까닭은 하느님께 구하지 않기 때문입니다.
- 구해도 얻지 못한다면 그것은 욕정을 채우려고 잘못 구하기 때문입니다.
- 절조 없는 사람들! 이 세상과 짝하면 하느님을 등지게 된다는 것을 알지 못합니까? 누구든지 이 세상의 친구가 되려고 하는 사람은 하느님의 원수가 됩니다.
- "하느님께서는 우리에게 심어주신 영혼을 질투하실 만큼 사랑하신다." 하는 성서 말씀이 공연한 말씀인 줄 압니까?

- From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
- Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
- Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
- Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
- Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

- 그러나 하느님의 은총은 그것으로 그치지 않습니다. 그래서 성서에도 "하느님께서는 교만한 자를 물리치시고 겸손한 사람에게 은총을 주신다."는 말씀이 있습니다.
- 그러므로 하느님께 복종하고 악마를 대항하십시오. 그러면 악마는 여러분을 떠나 달아날 것입니다.
- 하느님께 가까이 가십시오. 그러면 하느님께서 여러분에게 가까이 오실 것입니다. 죄인들은 손을 깨끗이 씻고 두 마음을 품은 자들은 순결한 마음을 가지십시오.
- 여러분은 괴로워하고 슬퍼하며 우십시오. 웃음을 슬픔으로 바꾸고 기쁨을 근심으로 바꾸십시오.
- 주님 앞에서 스스로 낮추십시오. 그러면 주님께서 여러분을 높여주실 것입니다.

- But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
- Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
- Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
- Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
- Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

- 형제 여러분, 서로 헐뜯지 마십시오. 자기 형제를 헐뜯거나 심판하는 사람은 율법을 헐뜯고 율법을 심판하는 사람입니다. 여러분이 율법을 심판하면 율법을 지키는 사람이 아니라 심판자가 됩니다.
- 그러나 율법을 정하시고 심판하시는 분은 오직 한 분이십니다. 그분은 여러분을 구원하실 수도 있고 멸망시키실 수도 있는 분입니다. 여러분이 무엇이기에 이웃을 심판한단 말입니까?
- "오늘이나 내일쯤 아무 아무 도시로 가서 일 년 동안 거기에서 지내며 장사를 하여 돈을 벌어보겠다." 하는 사람들에게 한마디 합니다.
- 당신들은 내일 당신들의 생명이 어떻게 될는지 알지 못합니다. 당신들은 잠깐 나타났다가 사라져버리는 안개에 지나지 않습니다.
- 그러므로 당신들은 "만일 주님께서 허락해 주신다면 우리는 살아가며 이런 일 저런 일을 해보겠다." 하고 말해야 할 것입니다.

- Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
- There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?
- Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
- Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
- For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

- 그런데도 당신들은 지금 허영에 들떠서 장담을 하고 있습니다. 이런 장담은 모두 악한 것입니다.
- 사람이 제가 마땅히 해야 할 착한 일을 알면서도 하지 않으면 그것이 곧 죄가 됩니다.

- But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.
- Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
