- 나는 믿음의 자녀인 여러분이 죄를 짓지 않게 하려고 여러분에게 이 편지를 씁니다. 그러나 혹 누가 죄를 짓더라도 아버지 앞에서 우리를 변호해 주시는 분이 계십니다. 그분은 의로우신 예수 그리스도이십니다.
- 그분은 우리의 죄를 용서해 주시려고 친히 제물이 되셨습니다. 우리의 죄뿐만 아니라 온 세상의 죄를 용서해 주시려고 제물이 되신 것입니다.
- 우리가 하느님의 계명을 지킬 때에 비로소 우리가 하느님을 알고 있다는 것이 확실해집니다.
- 하느님의 계명을 지키지 않으면서 하느님을 알고 있다고 말하는 자는 거짓말쟁이이고 진리를 저버리는 자입니다.
- 그러나 누구든지 하느님의 말씀을 지키면 그 사람은 진실로 하느님을 완전히 사랑하고 있는 것입니다. 이렇게 해서 우리는 우리가 하느님 안에 있다는 것을 알게 됩니다.

- My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
- And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our's only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
- And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
- He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
- But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

- 자기가 하느님 안에서 산다고 말하는 사람은 그리스도께서 사신 것처럼 살아야 합니다.
- 내가 사랑하는 여러분에게 써 보내는 것은 새로운 계명이 아니고 여러분이 처음부터 가지고 있던 옛 계명입니다. 그 옛 계명은 여러분이 줄곧 들어온 그 말씀입니다.
- 그러나 내가 여러분에게 써 보내는 것은 사실은 새 계명입니다. 어둠이 지나가고 참 빛이 이미 비치고 있기 때문입니다. 그 계명이 참되다는 것은 그리스도에게서 나타났고 또 그대들의 경험으로도 알 수 있습니다.
- 자기가 빛 속에서 산다고 말하면서 자기의 형제를 미워하는 자는 아직도 어둠 속에서 살고 있는 자입니다.
- 자기의 형제를 사랑하는 사람은 빛 속에서 살고 있는 사람이며 그는 남을 죄짓게 하는 일이 없습니다.

- He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
- Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
- Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
- He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
- He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.

- 그러나 자기 형제를 미워하는 자는 어둠 속에 있으며 어둠 속에서 살아가기 때문에 그 눈이 어둠에 가려져서 자기가 어디로 가는지 알지 못합니다.
- 사랑하는 자녀들이여, 여러분의 죄가 그리스도를 통하여 용서를 받았기 때문에 나는 이 편지를 씁니다.
- 아버지 된 사람들이여, 천지 창조 이전부터 계신 그분을 여러분이 알고 있기 때문에 나는 이 편지를 씁니다. 젊은이들이여, 여러분이 이미 악마를 이겼기 때문에 나는 이 편지를 씁니다.
- 어린 자녀들이여, 여러분이 이미 아버지를 알고 있기 때문에 나는 이 편지를 씁니다. 아버지 된 사람들이여, 천지 창조 이전부터 계신 그분을 여러분이 알고 있기 때문에 나는 이 편지를 씁니다. 젊은이들이여, 여러분은 강하고, 하느님의 말씀을 지니고 살며 악마를 이겨냈기 때문에 나는 이 편지를 씁니다.
- 여러분은 세상이나 세상에 속한 것들을 사랑하지 마십시오. 세상을 사랑하는 사람에게는 그 마음속에 아버지를 향한 사랑이 없습니다.

- But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
- I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.
- I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.
- I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
- Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

- 세상에 있는 모든 것, 곧 육체의 쾌락과 눈의 쾌락을 좇는 것이나 재산을 가지고 자랑하는 것은 아버지께로부터 나온 것이 아니고 세상에서 나온 것입니다.
- 세상도 가고 세상의 정욕도 다 지나가지만 하느님의 뜻대로 사는 사람은 영원히 살 것입니다.

- For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
- And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
