- 사랑하는 자녀들이여, 여러분은 아무에게도 속지 마십시오. 올바른 일을 하는 사람은 그리스도와 마찬가지로 올바른 사람입니다.
- 언제나 죄를 짓는 자는 악마에게 속해 있습니다. 사실 죄는 처음부터 악마의 짓입니다. 악마가 저질러놓은 일을 파멸시키려고 하느님의 아들이 나타나셨던 것입니다.
- 누구든지 하느님께로부터 난 사람은 자기 안에 하느님의 본성을 지녔으므로 죄를 짓지 않습니다. 그는 하느님께로부터 난 사람이기 때문에 도대체 죄를 지을 수가 없습니다.
- 옳은 일을 하지 않거나 자기 형제를 사랑하지 않는 자는 하느님께로부터 난 자가 아닙니다. 이와 같이 하느님의 자녀와 악마의 자식은 분명히 구별됩니다.
- 여러분이 처음부터 들어온 계명의 말씀은 우리가 서로 사랑해야 한다는 것입니다.

- Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
- He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
- Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
- In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
- For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

- 그리고 우리가 카인처럼 되어서는 안 된다는 것입니다. 카인은 악마의 자식으로서 자기 동생을 죽인 자입니다. 그가 동생을 죽인 이유는 무엇이었습니까? 동생이 한 일은 옳은 일이었는데 자기가 한 일은 악한 일이었기 때문입니다.
- 형제 여러분, 세상이 여러분을 미워하더라도 이상히 여길 것 없습니다.
- 우리는 우리의 형제들을 사랑하기 때문에 이미 죽음을 벗어나서 생명의 나라에 들어와 있는 것이 분명합니다. 사랑하지 않는 사람은 죽음 속에 그대로 머물러 있는 것입니다.
- 자기 형제를 미워하는 자는 누구나 다 살인자입니다. 여러분이 아시다시피 살인자는 결코 영원한 생명을 누릴 수 없습니다.
- 그리스도께서는 우리를 위해서 당신의 목숨을 내놓으셨습니다. 이것으로 우리가 사랑이 무엇인지를 알게 되었습니다. 그러므로 우리도 형제들을 위해서 우리의 목숨을 내놓아야 합니다.

- Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.
- Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
- We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
- Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
- Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

- 누구든지 세상의 재물을 가지고 있으면서 자기의 형제가 궁핍한 것을 보고도 마음의 문을 닫고 그를 동정하지 않는다면 어떻게 그에게 하느님을 사랑하는 마음이 있다고 하겠습니까?
- 사랑하는 자녀들이여, 우리는 말로나 혀 끝으로 사랑하지 말고 행동으로 진실하게 사랑합시다.
- 우리는 이렇게 사랑함으로써 우리가 진리에 속해 있다는 것을 알게 되고 또 하느님 앞에서 확신을 가질 수 있습니다.
- 우리가 양심의 가책을 받을 때에도 그렇습니다. 하느님께서 우리의 마음보다 크시고 또 모든 것을 알고 계시기 때문입니다.
- 사랑하는 여러분, 우리가 양심의 가책을 받지 않을 때에는 하느님 앞에서 떳떳합니다.

- But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
- My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
- And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
- For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
- Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

- 그리고 우리가 무엇을 구하든지 하느님께로부터 다 받을 수 있습니다. 우리가 하느님의 계명을 지키고 있으며 하느님께서 기뻐하실 만한 일들을 하고 있기 때문입니다.
- 우리가 명령받은 대로 하느님의 아들 예수 그리스도의 이름을 믿고 서로 사랑하라는 것이 하느님의 계명입니다.
- 하느님의 계명을 지키는 사람은 하느님 안에서 살고 하느님께서도 그 사람 안에 계십니다. 하느님께서 우리 안에 계시다는 것은 우리에게 주신 성령을 보아서 알 수 있습니다.

- And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
- And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
- And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
