	창세기 42:1-43:15 가나안 땅에 흉년이 들어 애굽에 곡물을 사러 온 요셉의 형들은 요셉과 첫 대면을 하게 되었다. 요셉은 형들을 시험해 보기 위해 형들을 정탐꾼으로 몰아 그들 중 한 사람을 인질로 잡아 두고 베냐민을 데리고 다시 오라고 명령하였다. 야곱은 베냐민을 보내려 하지 않았으나 유다가 자신을 담보로 야곱을 설득하였다. 결국 야곱은 전능하신 하나님을 의지하고 베냐민을 보내기로 결단을 내렸다.

	요셉과 형들의 1차 대면(42:1-42:25)

야곱은 이집트에 곡식이 있다는 것을 알고 아들들에게 말하였다. "왜 서로 얼굴들만 쳐다보고 있느냐?

내가 들으니 이집트엔 곡식이 있다더라. 그러니 내려가 곡식을 사오너라. 어떻게든지 살아야지 이러고 있다가 그냥 죽을 수야 없지 않느냐?"

그래서 요셉의 열 형은 이집트로 밀을 사러 떠났다.

그러나 야곱은 요셉의 아우 베냐민만은 형들과 함께 보내지 않았다. 베냐민이 무슨 변이라도 당하면 어떻게 하나 걱정스러웠던 것이다.

가나안 땅에도 기근이 들었기 때문에 이스라엘의 아들들도 다른 사람들 틈에 끼여 곡식을 사러 내려가지 않을 수 없었다.

Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, "Why are you staring at one another?"

He said, "Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down there and buy some for us from that place, so that we may live and not die."

Then ten brothers of Joseph went down to buy grain from Egypt.

But Jacob did not send Joseph's brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, "I am afraid that harm may befall him."

So the sons of Israel came to buy grain among those who were coming, for the famine was in the land of Canaan also.

그 때에 요셉은 이미 그 땅의 통치자가 되어 있었다. 그가 바로 그 땅 온 백성에게 곡식을 파는 책임자였다. 요셉의 형들은 도착하는 길로 얼굴을 땅에 대고 그에게 절을 했다.

요셉은 형들을 보자 곧 알아보면서도 남을 대하듯이 거칠게 말하였다. "너희는 어디서 온 자들이냐?" 그들이 대답하였다. "가나안 땅에서 양식을 사러 왔습니다."

형들은 요셉을 알아보지 못했으나, 요셉은 형들을 알아보고

형들이 이렇게 되리라 꾸었던 꿈을 생각하면서 을러메었다. "너희들은 간첩이지? 이 땅의 허점을 살피러 왔지?"

그러자 형들은 변명을 늘어놓았다. "아닙니다. 나리, 소인들은 그저 양식을 사러 왔을 뿐입니다.

Now Joseph was the ruler over the land; he was the one who sold to all the people of the land And Joseph's brothers came and bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.

When Joseph saw his brothers he recognized them, but he disguised himself to them and spoke to them harshly. And he said to them, "Where have you come from?" And they said, "From the land of Canaan, to buy food."

But Joseph had recognized his brothers, although they did not recognize him.

Joseph remembered the dreams which he had about them, and said to them, "You are spies; you have come to look at the undefended parts of our land."

Then they said to him, "No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food.

우리는 모두 한 아버지의 자식입니다. 우리는 거짓말할 줄 모르는 사람입니다. 절대로 간첩이 아닙니다."

그가 말하였다. "그럴 리가 없다. 너희는 틀림없이 이 땅의 허점을 살피러 왔어."

그들이 대답하였다. "소인들은 본래 열두 형제였습니다. 우리는 한 아버지의 아들들인데, 아버지는 지금 가나안 땅에 계십니다. 막내 동생은 지금도 아버지와 함께 있습니다. 동생 하나는 없어졌습니다."

"내 말이 틀림없다. 너희는 간첩이야." 하고 요셉은 을러메었다.

"너희를 시험해 봐야겠다. 너희 막내 동생을 이리로 데려오지 않고서는, 파라오가 살아 계시는 한, 여기에서 절대로 나갈 수 없다.

"We are all sons of one man; we are honest men, your servants are not spies."

Yet he said to them, "No, but you have come to look at the undefended parts of our land!"

But they said, "Your servants are twelve brothers in all, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is with our father today, and one is no longer alive."

Joseph said to them, "It is as I said to you, you are spies;

by this you will be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your youngest brother comes here!

너희 가운데서 한 사람을 보내어 동생을 데려오너라. 그 동안 너희는 옥에서 기다리고 있어야 한다. 너희 말이 참말인지 시험해 봐야겠다. 만일 데려오지 못하면 그 때엔 파라오가 살아 계시는 것처럼 너희가 간첩이라는 것이 틀림없는 것이다."

그리고서 사흘 동안 그들을 감옥에 가두어두었다.

사흘째 되던 날, 요셉은 그들에게 이렇게 말하였다. "나도 하느님 두려운 줄 아는 사람이다. 그러니 너희는 이렇게 하여라. 그래야 살 수 있다.

만일 너희가 정직한 사람이라면, 너희 형제 중 한 사람만 감옥에 남겨두고 나머지는 너희 집안 식구들이 굶어 죽지 않도록 곡식을 가지고 가거라.

그리고서 너희 막내 동생을 나에게로 데려오너라. 그렇게 하면 너희 말이 참말이라는 것이 밝혀지고 너희는 죽음을 면할 것이다." 그들은 그대로 하기로 하고

"Send one of you that he may get your brother, while you remain confined, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you. But if not, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies."

So he put them all together in prison for three days.

Now Joseph said to them on the third day, "Do this and live, for I fear God:

if you are honest men, let one of your brothers be confined in your prison; but as for the rest of you, go, carry grain for the famine of your households,

and bring your youngest brother to me, so your words may be verified, and you will not die." And they did so.

서로들 수군거리기 시작하였다. "사실이지, 우리가 동생에게 그 짓을 하고 어떻게 벌을 면하겠니? 그렇게 가슴 아프게 애원하는 것을 보면서도 못 들은 체했는데! 그 때문에 우리가 이런 곤경에 빠진 거야."

그러는데 르우벤이 그들에게 한마디 했다. "그 애에게 못할 짓을 하지 말자고 내가 너희에게 말하지 않았더냐? 그런데 너희는 내 말을 들으려 하지 않았다. 이제 그의 피가 앙갚음을 하는 것이다."

그들은 자기들과 요셉 사이에 통역이 서 있었기 때문에 요셉이 자기들의 말을 듣고 있는 줄은 몰랐다.

요셉은 듣다 말고 물러가서 울었다. 다시 돌아와서 말을 주고받다가 요셉은 그들 중 시므온을 불러내어 그들이 보는 앞에서 묶었다.

그리고는 그들의 그릇에 밀을 채우고 그들의 돈을 자루 하나하나에 다시 넣고 그리고 돌아가는 도중에 먹을 양식까지 주라고 지시하였다. 그대로 되었다.

Then they said to one another, "Truly we are guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the distress of his soul when he pleaded with us, yet we would not listen; therefore this distress has come upon us."

Reuben answered them, saying, "Did I not tell you, 'Do not sin against the boy'; and you would not listen? Now comes the reckoning for his blood."

They did not know, however, that Joseph understood, for there was an interpreter between them.

He turned away from them and wept But when he returned to them and spoke to them, he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.

Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain and to restore every man's money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. And thus it was done for them.

	야곱의 결단(42:26-43:15)

그들은 곡식을 나귀에 싣고 길을 떠났다.

밤에 묵을 곳에 이르러 그들 중 하나가 나귀에게 먹이를 먹이려고 자루를 풀다가 그 아귀에 자기의 돈이 그대로 있는 것을 보았다.

"내 돈이 도로 돌아왔다. 아, 여기 내 자루 속에 있어!" 이렇게 외치는 소리를 듣고 형제들은 얼빠진 사람처럼 떨면서 서로 아우성을 쳤다. "하느님 맙소사. 이게 어찌 된 일이냐?"

그러면서 그들은 가나안 땅으로 아버지 야곱에게 돌아왔다. 돌아오는 길로 그 동안 겪은 모든 일을 보고하였다.

"그 나라의 어른이 우리를 보고 자기네 땅을 살피러 온 간첩이라면서 심한 말로 몰아 세웠습니다.

So they loaded their donkeys with their grain and departed from there.

As one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at the lodging place, he saw his money; and behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.

Then he said to his brothers, "My money has been returned, and behold, it is even in my sack." And their hearts sank, and they turned trembling to one another, saying, "What is this that God has done to us?"

When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them, saying,

"The man, the lord of the land, spoke harshly with us, and took us for spies of the country.

그래서 우리는 거짓말이라고는 통 모르는 사람으로서 간첩질하러 온 것이 아니라고 변명했지요.

우리는 본래 열두 형제인데 한 아버지의 자식이고 동생 하나는 이미 없어졌고 막내는 지금도 가나안 땅에 아버지와 함께 있다고 했습니다.

그랬더니 그 나라 어른이 이러이러하게 하면 우리가 정직한 사람인 줄 알겠다면서, 우리들 중 한 사람만 남기고 나머지는 집안 식구들이 굶어 죽지 않도록 곡식을 가지고 길을 떠나라고 하더군요.

그리고 막내를 데려와야 우리가 간첩이 아니고 거짓말하는 사람이 아닌 줄 알겠다는 것이었습니다. 그러면 형제를 도로 내주고 마음대로 그 땅에 드나들게 해주겠다고 하였습니다."

그들은 자루를 비우다가 자루마다 돈 주머니가 그대로 들어 있는 것을 보았다. 그들은 아버지와 함께 그 돈 주머니를 보고는 겁이 덜컥 났다.

"But we said to him, 'We are honest men; we are not spies.

'We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no longer alive, and the youngest is with our father today in the land of Canaan.'

"The man, the lord of the land, said to us, 'By this I will know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me and take grain for the famine of your households, and go.

'But bring your youngest brother to me that I may know that you are not spies, but honest men. I will give your brother to you, and you may trade in the land.'"

Now it came about as they were emptying their sacks, that behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were dismayed.

아버지 야곱이 그들에게 말하였다. "너희는 나에게서 자식을 하나하나 빼앗아가는구나. 요셉도 없어졌고 시므온도 없어졌는데 이제 와서 베냐민마저 데려가겠다는 거냐? 엎친 데 덮친 격으로."

르우벤이 다짐하며 말하였다. "만일 제가 베냐민을 아버지께로 다시 데려오지 못한다면 제 두 아들을 죽이셔도 좋습니다. 저에게 그 애를 맡기십시오. 어떤 일이 있어도 그를 아버지께 다시 데려오겠습니다."

그러나 그는 막무가내였다. "이 애만은 데리고 가지 못한다. 그 형은 죽었고 이 애 하나 남았는데 가는 길에서 무슨 변이라도 당하면 어떻게 할 셈이냐? 너희들은 이 늙은 것이 백발이 성성해 가지고 슬퍼하며 지하로 내려가는 꼴을 보고 싶으냐?"

Their father Jacob said to them, "You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and you would take Benjamin; all these things are against me."

Then Reuben spoke to his father, saying, "You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring him back to you; put him in my care, and I will return him to you."

But Jacob said, "My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone is left If harm should befall him on the journey you are taking, then you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow."

그러나 땅에 기근은 심해만 갔다.

그들이 이집트에서 가져온 곡식은 떨어져 가고 있었다. 하는 수 없이 그들의 아버지는 다시 가서 양식을 좀 더 사오라고 하였다.

그러나 유다가 아버지에게 이렇게 말하였다. "그 어른이 우리들에게 분명히 경고했습니다. 동생을 데리고 오지 않으면 당신의 얼굴을 볼 수 없으리라고 말입니다.

만일 아버지께서 동생을 우리와 함께 보내신다면, 내려가 양식을 아버지께 사다 드리겠지만,

그 애를 보내시지 않는다면 우리는 내려가지도 못합니다. 그 어른 말씀이 동생을 데리고 오지 않으면 당신의 얼굴을 볼 수 없으리라고 했습니다."

Now the famine was severe in the land.

So it came about when they had finished eating the grain which they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, "Go back, buy us a little food."

Judah spoke to him, however, saying, "The man solemnly warned us, 'You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.'

"If you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.

"But if you do not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, 'You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.'"

이스라엘이 "동생이 또 하나 있다는 소리는 왜 해서 나를 이리도 괴롭히느냐?" 하고 걱정하자

그들은 이렇게 변명하였다. "그 어른이 우리와 우리의 일가에 어떤 사람이 있는지, 아버지가 아직도 살아 계시는지, 또 다른 동생은 없는지 낱낱이 캐물었습니다. 그가 묻는 대로 대답하다 보니 그런 것까지 털어놓게 되었습니다. 그가 우리더러 동생을 데려오라고 할 줄이야 어찌 알았겠습니까?"

유다가 나서서 아버지 이스라엘에게 다짐하였다. "그 애를 저에게 맡겨 보내주십시오. 그러면 우리가 곧 떠나가겠습니다. 아버지나 우리 자식들이나 우리나 다 살아야지 이대로 죽을 수는 없지 않습니까?

제가 그 애를 책임지겠습니다. 그 애를 저에게서 찾으십시오. 만일 그 애를 다시 데려다가 아버지 앞에 세우지 못하는 일이라도 생긴다면 제 평생에 아버지께 죄인이 될 것입니다.

이렇게 꾸물거리지만 않았더라면, 지금쯤 두 번은 갔다 왔겠습니다."

Then Israel said, "Why did you treat me so badly by telling the man whether you still had another brother?"

But they said, "The man questioned particularly about us and our relatives, saying, 'Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?' So we answered his questions. Could we possibly know that he would say, 'Bring your brother down'?"

Judah said to his father Israel, "Send the lad with me and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, we as well as you and our little ones.

"I myself will be surety for him; you may hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame before you forever.

"For if we had not delayed, surely by now we could have returned twice."

"정 그렇다면 이렇게들 하여라." 하고 아버지 이스라엘이 아들들에게 일렀다. "이 땅에서 난 가장 좋은 소출을 그릇에 담고, 또 그 어른에게 드릴 선물로 유향과 꿀을 얼마쯤, 그리고 향고무, 몰약, 유향나무 열매, 감복숭아를 가지고 내려가거라.

돈은 갑절 해서 가지고 가거라. 너희 자루 아귀에 들어 돌아왔던 그 돈도 도로 가져가거라. 아마 그것은 잘못된 것이었을 게다.

너희 동생도 데리고 어서 그 어른에게로 돌아가거라.

전능하신 하느님께서 그 어른으로 하여금 너희에게 자비를 베풀게 해주시기 바란다. 그래서 남기고 온 그 아이와 베냐민을 돌려보내 준다면 오죽이나 좋겠니! 하지만 자식을 잃어야 한다면 잃었지 별수 있겠느냐?"

그리하여 그들은 선물을 마련하고 돈을 갑절로 준비하여 베냐민을 데리고 길을 떠나 이집트로 내려가 요셉 앞에 섰다.

Then their father Israel said to them, "If it must be so, then do this: take some of the best products of the land in your bags, and carry down to the man as a present, a little balm and a little honey, aromatic gum and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds.

"Take double the money in your hand, and take back in your hand the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks; perhaps it was a mistake.

"Take your brother also, and arise, return to the man;

and may God Almighty grant you compassion in the sight of the man, so that he will release to you your other brother and Benjamin And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved."

So the men took this present, and they took double the money in their hand, and Benjamin; then they arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.
