- 엘리사벳은 달이 차서 아들을 낳았다.
- 이웃과 친척들은 주께서 엘리사벳에게 놀라운 자비를 베푸셨다는 소식을 듣고 엘리사벳과 함께 기뻐하였다.
- 아기가 태어난 지 여드레가 되던 날, 그들은 아기의 할례식에 왔다. 그리고 아버지의 이름을 따서 아기를 즈가리야라고 부르려 하였다.
- 그러나 아기 어머니가 나서서 "안됩니다. 이 아이의 이름은 요한이라고 해야 합니다." 하였다.
- 사람들은 "당신 집안에는 그런 이름을 가진 사람이 없지 않습니까?" 하며

- Now the time had come for Elizabeth to give birth, and she gave birth to a son.
- Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had displayed His great mercy toward her; and they were rejoicing with her.
- And it happened that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to call him Zacharias, after his father.
- But his mother answered and said, "No indeed; but he shall be called John."
- And they said to her, "There is no one among your relatives who is called by that name."

- 아기 아버지에게 아기의 이름을 무엇이라 하겠느냐고 손짓으로 물었다.
- 즈가리야는 작은 서판을 달라 하여 "아기 이름은 요한."이라고 썼다. 이것을 보고 사람들이 모두 이상하게 생각하였다.
- 바로 그 순간에 즈가리야는 입이 열리고 혀가 풀려서 말을 하게 되어 하느님을 찬미하였다.
- 모든 이웃 사람들은 무서운 생각마저 들었다. 이 일은 유다 산골에 두루 퍼져 이야깃거리가 되었고
- 이 말을 들은 사람들은 모두 이것을 마음에 새기고 "이 아기가 장차 어떤 사람이 될까?" 하고 말하였다. 주님의 손길이 그 아기를 보살피고 계신 것이 분명했기 때문이다.

- And they made signs to his father, as to what he wanted him called.
- And he asked for a tablet and wrote as follows, "His name is John." And they were all astonished.
- And at once his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he began to speak in praise of God.
- Fear came on all those living around them; and all these matters were being talked about in all the hill country of Judea.
- All who heard them kept them in mind, saying, "What then will this child turn out to be?" For the hand of the Lord was certainly with him.

- 아기 아버지 즈가리야는 성령을 가득히 받아 예언의 노래를 불렀다.
- "찬미하여라, 이스라엘의 주 하느님을! 당신의 백성을 찾아와 해방시키셨으며,
- 우리를 구원하실 능력 있는 구세주를 당신의 종 다윗의 가문에서 일으키셨다.
- 예로부터 거룩한 예언자들의 입을 빌려 주님께서 말씀하신 대로
- 원수들의 손아귀에서 또 우리를 미워하는 모든 사람들의 손에서 우리를 구해 주려 하심이요,

- And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:
- "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people,
- And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of David His servant--
- As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from of old--
- Salvation FROM OUR ENEMIES, And FROM THE HAND OF ALL WHO HATE US;

- 우리 조상들에게 자비를 베푸시며 당신의 거룩한 계약을 기억하시고
- 우리 조상 아브라함에게 맹세하신 대로
- 우리를 원수들의 손아귀에서 구해 내시어
- 떳떳하게 주님을 섬기며 주님 앞에 한 평생을 거룩하고 올바르게 살게 하심이라.
- 아가야, 너는 지극히 높으신 하느님의 예언자 되어 주님보다 앞서 와서 그의 길을 닦으며

- To show mercy toward our fathers, And to remember His holy covenant,
- The oath which He swore to Abraham our father,
- To grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, Might serve Him without fear,
- In holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.
- "And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; For you will go on BEFORE THE LORD TO PREPARE HIS WAYS;

- 죄를 용서받고 구원받는 길을 주의 백성들에게 알리게 되리니
- 이것은 우리 하느님의 지극한 자비의 덕분이라. 하늘 높은 곳에 구원의 태양을 뜨게 하시어
- 죽음의 그늘 밑 어둠 속에 사는 우리에게 빛을 비추어주시고 우리의 발걸음을 평화의 길로 이끌어주시리라."
- 아기는 날로 몸과 마음이 굳세게 자라났으며 이스라엘 백성들 앞에 나타날 때까지 광야에서 살았다.

- To give to His people the knowledge of salvation By the forgiveness of their sins,
- Because of the tender mercy of our God, With which the Sunrise from on high will visit us,
- TO SHINE UPON THOSE WHO SIT IN DARKNESS AND THE SHADOW OF DEATH, To guide our feet into the way of peace."
- And the child continued to grow and to become strong in spirit, and he lived in the deserts until the day of his public appearance to Israel.
