- 예수께서 하루는 어떤 곳에서 기도를 하고 계셨다. 기도를 마치셨을 때 제자 하나가 "주님, 요한이 자기 제자들에게 가르쳐준 것같이 저희에게도 기도를 가르쳐주십시오." 하고 말하였다.
- 예수께서는 이렇게 가르쳐주셨다. "너희는 기도할 때 이렇게 하여라. 아버지, 온 세상이 아버지를 하느님으로 받들게 하시며 아버지의 나라가 오게 하소서.
- 날마다 우리에게 필요한 양식을 주시고
- 우리가 우리에게 잘못한 이를 용서하오니 우리의 죄를 용서하시고 우리를 유혹에 빠지지 않게 하소서."
- 예수께서는 그들에게 또 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "너희 중 한 사람에게 어떤 친구가 있다고 하자. 한밤중에 그 친구를 찾아가서 '여보게, 빵 세 개만 꾸어주게.

- It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, "Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples."
- And He said to them, "When you pray, say: 'Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come.
- 'Give us each day our daily bread.
- 'And forgive us our sins, For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.'"
- Then He said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and goes to him at midnight and says to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves;

- 내 친구 하나가 먼 길을 가다가 우리 집에 들렀는데 내어놓을 것이 있어야지.' 하고 사정을 한다면
- 그 친구는 안에서 '귀찮게 굴지 말게. 벌써 문을 닫아걸고 아이들도 나도 다 잠자리에 들었으니 일어나서 줄 수가 없네.' 하고 거절할 것이다.
- 잘 들어라. 이렇게 우정만으로는 일어나서 빵을 내어주지 않겠지만 귀찮게 졸라대면 마침내는 자리에서 일어나 그의 청을 들어주지 않겠느냐?
- 그러므로 나는 말한다. 구하여라, 받을 것이다. 찾아라, 얻을 것이다. 문을 두드려라, 열릴 것이다.
- 누구든지 구하면 받고 찾으면 얻고 문을 두드리면 열릴 것이다.

- for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him';
- and from inside he answers and says, 'Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.'
- "I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs.
- "So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
- "For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened.

- 생선을 달라는 자식에게 뱀을 줄 아비가 어디 있겠으며
- 달걀을 달라는데 전갈을 줄 사람이 어디 있겠느냐?
- 너희가 악하면서도 자녀에게 좋은 것을 줄 줄 알거든 하늘에 계신 아버지께서야 구하는 사람에게 더 좋은 것 곧 성령을 주시지 않겠느냐?"

- "Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he?
- "Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he?
- "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"
