- 하루는 사울의 아들 요나단이 자기의 무기 당번에게 "우리끼리 저 건너 불레셋 초소로 가자." 하고 일렀다. 그러나 아버지에게는 알리지 않았다.
- 그 때 사울은 육백 명 가량 되는 군인을 거느리고 게바 변두리 미그론에 있는 석류나무 아래 진을 치고 있었다.
- 실로에서 야훼의 사제로 있던 엘리의 증손이요, 비느하스의 손자요, 이가봇의 조카며 아히툽의 아들인 아히야가 에봇을 모셔 왔다. 그런데 요나단이 자리를 뜬 줄은 아무도 몰랐다.
- 불레셋 진영으로 건너가는 길목 양쪽에는 날카로운 돌기둥이 둘 있었는데, 하나는 보세스라 하고 다른 하나는 세네라고 하였다.
- 하나는 북쪽에서 믹마스를 향하고 다른 하나는 남쪽에서 게바를 향하여 서 있었다.

- Now the day came that Jonathan, the son of Saul, said to the young man who was carrying his armor, "Come and let us cross over to the Philistines' garrison that is on the other side." But he did not tell his father.
- Saul was staying in the outskirts of Gibeah under the pomegranate tree which is in Migron And the people who were with him were about six hundred men,
- and Ahijah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the priest of the LORD at Shiloh, was wearing an ephod. And the people did not know that Jonathan had gone.
- Between the passes by which Jonathan sought to cross over to the Philistines' garrison, there was a sharp crag on the one side and a sharp crag on the other side, and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.
- The one crag rose on the north opposite Michmash, and the other on the south opposite Geba.

- 요나단이 자기 무기 당번에게 일렀다. "자! 오랑캐 놈들의 초소로 들어가자. 야훼께서 손을 써주실 것이다. 야훼께서 우리를 도와만 주신다면 적의 수가 많든 적든 무슨 상관이겠느냐?"
- "생각대로 하십시오. 어떤 결정을 내리시든지 저는 그대로 따를 뿐입니다." 무기 당번이 이렇게 말하자
- 요나단은 입을 열었다. "그럼 좋다. 놈들이 볼 수 있는 데로 건너가자.
- 그리고 만약 저쪽에서 '우리가 갈 때까지 꼼짝 말고 게 섰거라.' 하고 소리치면 그 자리에 선 채 놈들한테로 올라가지 말고,
- 만약 자기들한테로 올라오라고 하면 올라가 치자. 바로 이것으로 야훼께서 이미 놈들을 우리 손에 부치셨다는 징조를 삼자."

- Then Jonathan said to the young man who was carrying his armor, "Come and let us cross over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; perhaps the LORD will work for us, for the LORD is not restrained to save by many or by few."
- His armor bearer said to him, "Do all that is in your heart; turn yourself, and here I am with you according to your desire."
- Then Jonathan said, "Behold, we will cross over to the men and reveal ourselves to them.
- "If they say to us, 'Wait until we come to you'; then we will stand in our place and not go up to them.
- "But if they say, 'Come up to us,' then we will go up, for the LORD has given them into our hands; and this shall be the sign to us."

- 그리고 나서 두 사람이 불레셋 초소에서 보이는 자리로 나서자 불레셋 사람들이, "저 봐라. 히브리 놈들이 숨어 있던 구멍에서 기어 나왔다!" 하면서
- 요나단과 그의 무기 당번을 건너다 보고 "이리로 올라오너라. 알려줄 게 있다." 하고 외쳤다. 이 말을 듣고 요나단은 무기 당번에게 "나만 따라 올라오너라. 야훼께서 놈들을 이스라엘 손에 부치셨다." 하고는
- 손과 발로 기어 올라갔다. 그의 무기 당번도 뒤를 바싹 따랐다. 요나단은 앞으로 걸어나오는 불레셋 군인들을 쳐죽였다. 무기 당번도 뒤따라 가며 쳐죽였다.
- 이렇게 요나단과 그의 무기당번은 첫 대전에서 하루갈이 밭을 반 이랑 갈아 젖히듯, 이십 명 가량 죽였다.
- 진지 안에 있는 군대, 전장에 있는 군대, 초소에 있는 군대, 기습부대 할 것 없이 모든 군대가 겁에 질려 벌벌 떨었다. 온 땅이 뒤흔들리고 무시무시한 공포가 내리덮쳤다.

- When both of them revealed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines, the Philistines said, "Behold, Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden themselves."
- So the men of the garrison hailed Jonathan and his armor bearer and said, "Come up to us and we will tell you something " And Jonathan said to his armor bearer, "Come up after me, for the LORD has given them into the hands of Israel."
- Then Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet, with his armor bearer behind him; and they fell before Jonathan, and his armor bearer put some to death after him.
- That first slaughter which Jonathan and his armor bearer made was about twenty men within about half a furrow in an acre of land.
- And there was a trembling in the camp, in the field, and among all the people. Even the garrison and the raiders trembled, and the earth quaked so that it became a great trembling.

- 베냐민 지방 게바에서 보초를 서던 사울의 군인들은 불레셋 군이 갈팡질팡하는 것을 보았다.
- 그러자 사울이 함께 있던 군인들에게 "인원을 점호하여 우리 가운데서 누가 빠져 나갔는지 알아내어라." 하고 명령하였다. 조사해 보니 요나단과 그의 무기 당번이 보이지 않았다.
- 사울이 아히야에게 에봇을 내오라고 일렀다. 그때 에봇은 이스라엘 앞에서 아히야가 모시고 있었다.
- 사울이 사제에게 말하고 있는 사이에도 불레셋 진영은 점점 더 소란해졌다. 그래서 사울은 사제에게 "그만두어라." 하고는
- 전군을 거느리고 소리치며 싸움터에 다다라보니, 적군은 제 편끼리 칼로 치고 찌르며 수라장을 이루고 있었다.

- Now Saul's watchmen in Gibeah of Benjamin looked, and behold, the multitude melted away; and they went here and there.
- Saul said to the people who were with him, "Number now and see who has gone from us." And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armor bearer were not there.
- Then Saul said to Ahijah, "Bring the ark of God here." For the ark of God was at that time with the sons of Israel.
- While Saul talked to the priest, the commotion in the camp of the Philistines continued and increased; so Saul said to the priest, "Withdraw your hand."
- Then Saul and all the people who were with him rallied and came to the battle; and behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, and there was very great confusion.

- 이제껏 불레셋에 붙어 그들과 같이 싸우러 나왔던 히브리인들이 반란을 일으켜 사울과 요나단이 이끄는 이스라엘 군에 가담하여 싸웠다.
- 에브라임 산악 지대에 숨었던 온 이스라엘 군도 불레셋 군이 도망친다는 말을 듣고 합세하여 쫓아가며 그들을 무찔렀다.
- 이렇게 그 날 야훼께서 이스라엘을 도와주셨으므로 싸움은 벳호론 건너편까지 번져갔다.
- 그 날 이스라엘 군이 하나 둘 모여왔을 때 사울은 전군에 맹세를 시켰다. "해 떨어질 때까지는 원수를 갚아야 할 터이니 그 때까지 무엇이든지 먹는 사람은 저주를 받는다." 그래서 전군은 아무것도 먹지를 못했다.
- 마침 거기 들에는 꿀이 든 벌집이 있었는데

- Now the Hebrews who were with the Philistines previously, who went up with them all around in the camp, even they also turned to be with the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.
- When all the men of Israel who had hidden themselves in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines had fled, even they also pursued them closely in the battle.
- So the LORD delivered Israel that day, and the battle spread beyond Beth-aven.
- Now the men of Israel were hard-pressed on that day, for Saul had put the people under oath, saying, "Cursed be the man who eats food before evening, and until I have avenged myself on my enemies." So none of the people tasted food.
- All the people of the land entered the forest, and there was honey on the ground.

- 군인들은 벌집 가까이 와서 꿀이 뚝뚝 떨어지는 것을 보고도 손가락으로 찍어다 입에 대는 자가 없었다. 맹세한 일이 무서웠던 것이다.
- 그러나 요나단은 아버지가 전군에게 다짐을 준 말을 듣지 못한 터이라, 손에 든 막대기를 내밀어 그 끝으로 벌집에서 꿀을 찍어 먹으니 눈이 번쩍 뜨였다.
- 군인 중의 하나가 요나단에게 "당신의 아버님께서 오늘 안으로 무엇이든지 먹는 사람은 저주를 받는다고 전군에 맹세를 시키셨습니다. 그래서 이렇게 군인들이 지쳐 있습니다." 하고 알려주었다.
- 그러자 요나단은 투덜댔다. "아버지께서 이 지역은 손도 못 대게 하시다니, 꿀 한 번 찍어 먹고 나는 이렇게 눈이 다 번쩍 뜨였는데
- 오늘 적군한테서 닥치는 대로 빼앗아 먹었던들 지금쯤은 불레셋 군을 더 죽일 수도 있었을 것이다."

- When the people entered the forest, behold, there was a flow of honey; but no man put his hand to his mouth, for the people feared the oath.
- But Jonathan had not heard when his father put the people under oath; therefore, he put out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.
- Then one of the people said, "Your father strictly put the people under oath, saying, 'Cursed be the man who eats food today.'" And the people were weary.
- Then Jonathan said, "My father has troubled the land. See now, how my eyes have brightened because I tasted a little of this honey.
- "How much more, if only the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies which they found! For now the slaughter among the Philistines has not been great."

- 그 날 이스라엘 군은 불레셋을 믹마스에서 아얄론에 이르기까지 따라가며 쳐죽였다. 그런데 군인들은 허기진 나머지
- 약탈에 나서 양, 소, 송아지 할 것 없이 마구 잡아다 맨 땅에서 잡고 고기를 피째 먹어버렸다.
- 사울은 군인들이 고기를 피째로 먹어 야훼께 죄를 짓고 있다는 말을 전해 듣고 "하느님을 배반하였구나." 하면서 큰 돌을 굴려오라고 명하였다.
- 그리고는 전군에 흩어져 나가, 소와 양을 가져다 거기에서 잡아먹되 고기를 피째로 먹어 야훼께 죄를 지어서는 안 된다고 전하게 하였다. 그래서 사람들은 날이 어두워지자 저마다 소를 몰고 와 거기에서 잡았다.
- 이리하여 사울은 야훼께 제단을 세워드렸는데 이것이 그가 야훼께 처음으로 세워드린 제단이다.

- They struck among the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon. And the people were very weary.
- The people rushed greedily upon the spoil, and took sheep and oxen and calves, and slew them on the ground; and the people ate them with the blood.
- Then they told Saul, saying, "Behold, the people are sinning against the LORD by eating with the blood." And he said, "You have acted treacherously; roll a great stone to me today."
- Saul said, "Disperse yourselves among the people and say to them, 'Each one of you bring me his ox or his sheep, and slaughter it here and eat; and do not sin against the LORD by eating with the blood.'" So all the people that night brought each one his ox with him and slaughtered it there.
- And Saul built an altar to the LORD; it was the first altar that he built to the LORD.

- 사울이 이렇게 말하였다. "우리 일제히 오늘 밤 사이에 추격해 내려가 불레셋을 해 뜨기 전에 한 놈도 남기지 말고 쳐부수자." 그러자 군인들은 "좋으실 대로 하십시오." 하고 대답했으나, 아히야 사제는 우선 하느님께 여쭈어보자고 제의하였다.
- 사울이 하느님께 여쭈었다. "불레셋을 추격해 내려갈까요? 그들을 이스라엘 손에 부치시겠습니까?" 그런데 이번에는 아무런 응답도 내리시지 않았다.
- 그러자 사울이 선언하였다. "군대 지휘관들은 앞으로 나서거라. 오늘 이 죄가 누구에게 있는지 알아보리라.
- 이스라엘을 구원하시는 야훼, 살아 계시는 야훼 앞에서 나는 맹세한다. 그 죄가 내 자식 요나단에게 있다 하여도 마땅히 죽이리라." 그러나 군인들 가운데 입을 여는 사람은 하나도 없었다.
- 사울이 온 이스라엘 군에게 외쳤다. "너희는 모두 한편에 서라. 나와 내 아들 요나단은 다른 편에 서리라." 군인들이 모두 사울에게 "좋으실 대로 하십시오." 하고 대답하자

- Then Saul said, "Let us go down after the Philistines by night and take spoil among them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them." And they said, "Do whatever seems good to you." So the priest said, "Let us draw near to God here."
- Saul inquired of God, "Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will You give them into the hand of Israel?" But He did not answer him on that day.
- Saul said, "Draw near here, all you chiefs of the people, and investigate and see how this sin has happened today.
- "For as the LORD lives, who delivers Israel, though it is in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die." But not one of all the people answered him.
- Then he said to all Israel, "You shall be on one side and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side." And the people said to Saul, "Do what seems good to you."

- 사울이 이스라엘의 하느님 야훼께 아뢰었다. "오늘 소인에게 응답하지 않으시니, 웬일이십니까? 이스라엘의 하느님 야훼여, 만약 그 허물이 저나 제 자식 요나단에게 있다면 우림이 나오게 하시고, 그 허물이 당신의 백성 이스라엘에게 있다면 둠밈이 나오게 하십시오." 그러자 요나단과 사울이 걸리고 백성은 풀려났다.
- 사울이 말하였다. "나와 요나단 사이에 주사위를 던져라." 그러자 요나단이 걸렸다.
- 사울이 요나단에게 물었다. "네가 무엇을 했느냐? 말해 보아라." 요나단이 대답하였다. "사실대로 말씀드리겠습니다. 막대기 끝으로 꿀을 좀 찍어 맛보았을 뿐입니다. 그러나 죽을 각오는 되어 있습니다."
- 사울이 "어떤 일이 있어도 너 요나단은 사형이다." 하고 선언하였다.
- 그러자 군인들이 사울에게 간하였다. "이스라엘에 이번 대승을 안겨준 요나단을 죽이시다니 안 될 말씀입니다. 살아 계신 야훼를 두고 맹세합니다. 그의 머리카락 하나라도 결코 땅에 떨어뜨릴 수 없습니다. 그는 오늘 하느님과 함께 이 일을 해냈습니다." 이렇게 해서 군인들은 요나단을 살려내어 죽지 않게 하였다.

- Therefore, Saul said to the LORD, the God of Israel, "Give a perfect lot." And Jonathan and Saul were taken, but the people escaped.
- Saul said, "Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son." And Jonathan was taken.
- Then Saul said to Jonathan, "Tell me what you have done " So Jonathan told him and said, "I indeed tasted a little honey with the end of the staff that was in my hand. Here I am, I must die!"
- Saul said, "May God do this to me and more also, for you shall surely die, Jonathan."
- But the people said to Saul, "Must Jonathan die, who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Far from it! As the LORD lives, not one hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for he has worked with God this day." So the people rescued Jonathan and he did not die.

- 사울은 불레셋 군을 더 추격하지 아니하고 돌아갔다. 불레셋 군도 자기 고장으로 물러갔다.
- 사울은 모압, 암몬 백성, 에돔, 소바 왕, 불레셋 등 사방에 있는 원수들과 싸울 때마다 승리를 거두어 이스라엘 왕위를 굳혔다.
- 특히 그는 아말렉을 쳐부수고 침략받던 이스라엘을 구출하여 용명을 떨쳤다.
- 사울에게는 세 아들, 요나단, 이스위, 말기수아와 큰딸 메랍과 작은딸 미갈이 있었다.
- 사울의 아내는 아히마스의 딸 아히노암이었다. 그의 사령관은 삼촌 넬의 아들 아브넬이었다.

- Then Saul went up from pursuing the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their own place.
- Now when Saul had taken the kingdom over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, the sons of Ammon, Edom, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines; and wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment.
- He acted valiantly and defeated the Amalekites, and delivered Israel from the hands of those who plundered them.
- Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan and Ishvi and Malchi-shua; and the names of his two daughters were these: the name of the firstborn Merab and the name of the younger Michal.
- The name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam the daughter of Ahimaaz. And the name of the captain of his army was Abner the son of Ner, Saul's uncle.

- Now the war against the Philistines was severe all the days of Saul; and when Saul saw any mighty man or any valiant man, he attached him to his staff.
