	사무엘상 20:1-21:15 요나단은 다윗에 대한 사울의 마음을 떠보기 위하여 식사 자리에 다윗을 불참시켰다. 이에 사울은 크게 분노하여 다윗을 죽이려고 했고 다윗을 변호하는 요나단마저 해하려 하였다. 사울의 살의를 확인한 요나단은 다윗과 우정 어린 맹세를 하고 그를 도피시켰다. 놉의 아히멜렉에게 도피한 다윗은 그의 도움을 받고 다시 가드 왕 아기스에게로 망명했다.

	다윗과 요나단(20:1-20:42)

다윗이 라마에 있는 나욧에서 도망하여 요나단을 찾아가 항의하였다. "내가 무슨 짓을 했단 말인가? 내가 무슨 못할 짓을 했는가? 자네 아버님께 무슨 잘못을 저질렀기에 이렇게 내 목숨을 노리신단 말인가?"

요나단은 "자네를 죽이시다니, 그럴 리가 있나? 우리 아버지는 큰일이든 작은일이든 나에게 알리지 않고 하시는 일이 없으시다네. 그런데 이 일만은 나에게 숨기실 리가 있겠는가?" 하고 말하였다.

다윗은 다시 항의하였다. "틀림없이 자네 아버님께서 자네가 나를 끔찍이 생각해 주는 것을 아시고 자네가 괴로워할까봐 이 일만은 자네에게 알리지 않기로 하신 거야. 나는 한 발만 까딱해도 영락없이 죽을 몸이야. 이것은 하느님도 아시고 자네도 아는 일 아닌가?"

"그럼 내가 어떻게 하면 좋을지 자네의 소원을 말해 보게." 요나단이 이렇게 제의하자

다윗이 부탁하였다. "내일이 초하루, 내가 임금님의 정찬에 나가는 날이 아닌가? 그러니 내가 삼일 저녁까지 들에 나가 숨어 있게 해주게나.

Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said to Jonathan, "What have I done? What is my iniquity? And what is my sin before your father, that he is seeking my life?"

He said to him, "Far from it, you shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me. So why should my father hide this thing from me? It is not so!"

Yet David vowed again, saying, "Your father knows well that I have found favor in your sight, and he has said, 'Do not let Jonathan know this, or he will be grieved ' But truly as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, there is hardly a step between me and death."

Then Jonathan said to David, "Whatever you say, I will do for you."

So David said to Jonathan, "Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I ought to sit down to eat with the king But let me go, that I may hide myself in the field until the third evening.

만일 자네 아버님께서 내가 보이지 않는다고 찾으시거든, 문중의 주년제가 있어 속히 고향 베들레헴에 다녀올 수 있도록 휴가를 청하더라고 말해 주게.

그래서 만일 좋다고 하시면 이 몸이 무사하겠지만, 화를 내신다면 나를 해치려고 결심하신 걸로 알게.

제발 우정을 지켜주게. 자네는 야훼 앞에서 나와 엄숙히 의형제를 맺지 않았는가? 만약 나에게 허물이 있다면 차라리 자네가 날 죽이게. 자네 아버님의 손을 빌 것까지는 없지 않은가?"

"천만에!" 하면서 요나단이 말하였다. "만약 우리 아버님이 자네를 해치려고 마음 잡수신 것을 알게 된다면, 내가 어찌 자네에게 알려주지 않겠는가?"

다윗이 "자네 아버님께서 역정을 내실 경우, 누가 그것을 알려주겠는가?" 하고 묻자

"If your father misses me at all, then say, 'David earnestly asked leave of me to run to Bethlehem his city, because it is the yearly sacrifice there for the whole family.'

"If he says, 'It is good,' your servant will be safe; but if he is very angry, know that he has decided on evil.

"Therefore deal kindly with your servant, for you have brought your servant into a covenant of the LORD with you But if there is iniquity in me, put me to death yourself; for why then should you bring me to your father?"

Jonathan said, "Far be it from you! For if I should indeed learn that evil has been decided by my father to come upon you, then would I not tell you about it?"

Then David said to Jonathan, "Who will tell me if your father answers you harshly?"

요나단이 "들로 나가자." 하며 다윗을 들로 데리고 나갔다.

거기에서 요나단은 다윗에게 약속하였다. "나는 이스라엘의 하느님 야훼 앞에서 맹세하겠네. 내일 이맘때 다시 아버님 마음을 떠보겠는데 나에게서 별 소식이 없거든 아버님이 아직도 자네 다윗을 좋아하시는 걸로 알게.

하지만 아버님이 자네를 해치려고 하신다면 소식을 보내겠네. 만일 내가 알려주지 않아서 자네가 무사히 도망치지 못하게 된다면 야훼께서 이 요나단에게 아무리 중한 벌을 내리셔도 달게 받겠네. 야훼께서 아버님과 함께 하셨듯이 자네와도 함께 하시기를 바라네.

그 대신 내 목숨이 붙어 있는 동안에 야훼 앞에서 맺은 우정을 저버리지 말아주게. 내가 죽은 다음에라도

내 집안과 의리를 끊지 말고 길이 지켜주게. 야훼께서 자네 다윗의 원수들을 땅 위에서 없애버리시는 날,

Jonathan said to David, "Come, and let us go out into the field." So both of them went out to the field.

Then Jonathan said to David, "The LORD, the God of Israel, be witness! When I have sounded out my father about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if there is good feeling toward David, shall I not then send to you and make it known to you?

"If it please my father to do you harm, may the LORD do so to Jonathan and more also, if I do not make it known to you and send you away, that you may go in safety And may the LORD be with you as He has been with my father.

"If I am still alive, will you not show me the lovingkindness of the LORD, that I may not die?

"You shall not cut off your lovingkindness from my house forever, not even when the LORD cuts off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth."

나 요나단의 이름이 다윗 가문에서 끊긴다면 야훼께서는 자네 원수의 손을 빌려 책임을 물으실 것일세."

요나단은 다윗을 자기 목숨처럼 아꼈다. 요나단은 다윗을 아끼는 마음에서 그에게 다시 맹세하였다.

"내일은 초하루, 자네 자리가 비면 아버님이 자네를 찾으실 걸세.

모레가 되면 자네를 몹시 찾으실 테니 저번 일이 있을 때 숨었던 그 에셀 바위 옆에 가서 숨어 있게.

내가 과녁을 맞추는 체하고 그 쪽으로 활을 세 번 쏘고

So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, "May the LORD require it at the hands of David's enemies."

Jonathan made David vow again because of his love for him, because he loved him as he loved his own life.

Then Jonathan said to him, "Tomorrow is the new moon, and you will be missed because your seat will be empty.

"When you have stayed for three days, you shall go down quickly and come to the place where you hid yourself on that eventful day, and you shall remain by the stone Ezel.

"I will shoot three arrows to the side, as though I shot at a target.

시종을 시켜 화살을 집어 오게 하면서 그 시종에게 '화살이 이 쪽에 있다. 집어 오너라.' 하면 절대로 아무 일 없을 터이니 안심하고 나오게.

그러나 내가 시종에게 '화살이 저 쪽에 있다. 더 가거라!' 하면 야훼께서 자네를 보내시는 줄로 알고 떠나가게.

야훼께서 나와 자네 사이에 언제까지나 서 계실 것일세."

이리하여 다윗은 들에 숨게 되었다. 초하루가 되어 왕이 잔치에 나와 자리를 잡았다.

왕이 관습대로 벽 쪽에 자리를 잡자 요나단이 앞에 앉고 아브넬은 사울 옆에 앉았는데 다윗의 자리는 비어 있었다.

"And behold, I will send the lad, saying, 'Go, find the arrows.' If I specifically say to the lad, 'Behold, the arrows are on this side of you, get them,' then come; for there is safety for you and no harm, as the LORD lives.

"But if I say to the youth, 'Behold, the arrows are beyond you,' go, for the LORD has sent you away.

"As for the agreement of which you and I have spoken, behold, the LORD is between you and me forever."

So David hid in the field; and when the new moon came, the king sat down to eat food.

The king sat on his seat as usual, the seat by the wall; then Jonathan rose up and Abner sat down by Saul's side, but David's place was empty.

그러나 그 날은 사울이 아무 말도 하지 않았다. 다윗이 어쩌다가 부정을 타서 몸이 깨끗하지 못해 못 나왔거니 하고 생각하였던 것이다.

초하루는 그렇게 지났으나 그 다음날도 다윗의 자리가 비어 있자, 사울은 아들 요나단에게 "이새의 아들이 어제도 오늘도 정찬에 나오지 않았으니 웬일이냐?" 하고 물었다.

요나단이 왕에게 대답하였다. "다윗이 베들레헴엘 좀 다녀오게 해달라고 청하더군요.

형들이 고향에서 지내는 문중제사에 다녀와야 하니 갔다 오게 허락해 달라고 저한테 간청했습니다. 그래서 아버님께서 베푸시는 식탁에 나오지 못한 것입니다."

이 말을 듣고 사울은 요나단에게 버럭 화를 냈다. "이 몹쓸 화냥년의 자식놈아! 그래 네가 이새의 아들놈하고 단짝이 된 것을 내가 모를 줄 아느냐? 네 망신이 어미 망신이 될 줄 알아라.

Nevertheless Saul did not speak anything that day, for he thought, "It is an accident, he is not clean, surely he is not clean."

It came about the next day, the second day of the new moon, that David's place was empty; so Saul said to Jonathan his son, "Why has the son of Jesse not come to the meal, either yesterday or today?"

Jonathan then answered Saul, "David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem,

for he said, 'Please let me go, since our family has a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to attend. And now, if I have found favor in your sight, please let me get away that I may see my brothers.' For this reason he has not come to the king's table."

Then Saul's anger burned against Jonathan and he said to him, "You son of a perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you are choosing the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother's nakedness?

이새의 아들놈이 땅 위에 살아 있는 한 너와 네 왕관은 안전하지 못하리라. 당장 그 죽일 놈을 잡아들여라."

요나단이 "죽일 놈이라구요? 다윗이 무슨 짓을 했다고 그러십니까?" 하고 아버지에게 항의하자,

사울은 창을 뽑아 들고 아들을 죽이려 하였다. 요나단은 아버지가 다윗을 죽이기로 작정했다는 것을 알아차렸다.

요나단은 화가 나서 자리를 떴다. 그리고 축제 이틀째 되는 날에는 아무것도 먹지 않았다. 아버지가 다윗을 욕하였으므로 마음이 몹시 아팠던 것이다.

이튿날 요나단은 다윗과 약속한 시간에 어린아이 하나를 데리고 들로 나갔다.

"For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, neither you nor your kingdom will be established. Therefore now, send and bring him to me, for he must surely die."

But Jonathan answered Saul his father and said to him, "Why should he be put to death? What has he done?"

Then Saul hurled his spear at him to strike him down; so Jonathan knew that his father had decided to put David to death.

Then Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and did not eat food on the second day of the new moon, for he was grieved over David because his father had dishonored him.

Now it came about in the morning that Jonathan went out into the field for the appointment with David, and a little lad was with him.

그리고 아이에게 활을 쏠 테니 뛰어가 화살을 집어 오라고 시키고는 뛰어가는 아이의 머리 위로 활을 쏘았다.

요나단은 아이가 화살이 떨어진 지점에 닿을 즈음 해서, 그 아이 뒤에다 대고 "화살은 더 나가야 있다." 하고 소리쳤다.

"왜 머뭇거리고 있느냐? 어서 빨리 집어 오너라." 요나단의 시종은 그 화살을 집어가지고 상전에게 가져오면서도

무슨 영문인지 몰랐다. 다만 요나단과 다윗만이 그 곡절을 알고 있었다.

요나단은 시종에게 자기의 무기를 주어 성 안으로 돌려보냈다.

He said to his lad, "Run, find now the arrows which I am about to shoot." As the lad was running, he shot an arrow past him.

When the lad reached the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan called after the lad and said, "Is not the arrow beyond you?"

And Jonathan called after the lad, "Hurry, be quick, do not stay!" And Jonathan's lad picked up the arrow and came to his master.

But the lad was not aware of anything; only Jonathan and David knew about the matter.

Then Jonathan gave his weapons to his lad and said to him, "Go, bring them to the city."

시종이 떠나자 다윗은 숨어 있던 등성이 뒤에서 일어나 세 번 땅에 엎드려 절을 하고는 둘이서 서로 얼싸안고 실컷 울었다.

그리고 나서 요나단이 다윗에게 말하였다. "가보게. 잘되기를 빌겠네. 우리는 서로 야훼의 이름으로 맹세한 몸이 아닌가! 그러니 야훼께서 자네와 나, 자네 후손과 내 후손 사이에 언제까지나 서주실 것일세."

When the lad was gone, David rose from the south side and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed three times And they kissed each other and wept together, but David wept the more.

Jonathan said to David, "Go in safety, inasmuch as we have sworn to each other in the name of the LORD, saying, 'The LORD will be between me and you, and between my descendants and your descendants forever.'" Then he rose and departed, while Jonathan went into the city.

	다윗과 아히멜렉(21:1-21:15)

다윗은 곧 떠나가고 요나단은 성 안으로 돌아왔다.

다윗은 놉으로 사제 아히멜렉을 찾아갔다. 아히멜렉이 당황하여 다윗을 맞아 "어떻게 아무도 없이 혼자 오시오?" 하고 묻자

다윗은 사제 아히멜렉에게 이렇게 대답하였다. "나는 왕명을 띠고 길을 떠났습니다. 그런데 왕께서 저에게 임무를 맡겨 보내시면서 아무에게도 그것을 알리지 말라고 하셨습니다. 그래서 제 부하들과 어느 지점에서 만나기로 약속하고 헤어졌습니다.

그런데 지금 사제님께 혹시 먹을 것이 없습니까? 떡 다섯 덩이라도 좋습니다. 없으면 아무것이라도 주십시오."

사제가 "보통 떡은 지금 없고, 거룩한 떡밖에 없소이다. 한데 장군의 부하들은 여인을 가까이한 일이 없는지요?" 하고 묻자,

Then David came to Nob to Ahimelech the priest; and Ahimelech came trembling to meet David and said to him, "Why are you alone and no one with you?"

David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king has commissioned me with a matter and has said to me, 'Let no one know anything about the matter on which I am sending you and with which I have commissioned you; and I have directed the young men to a certain place.'

"Now therefore, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever can be found."

The priest answered David and said, "There is no ordinary bread on hand, but there is consecrated bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women."

David answered the priest and said to him, "Surely women have been kept from us as previously when I set out and the vessels of the young men were holy, though it was an ordinary journey; how much more then today will their vessels be holy?"

다윗이 대답하였다. "나는 이번 길을 떠날 즈음 해서 며칠 동안은 여자를 가까이하지 않았습니다. 내 부하들의 그것도 부정을 타지 않았습니다. 이번 길이 예삿일로 가는 길이긴 하지만, 오늘만은 절대로 깨끗합니다."

그제야 사제는 거룩한 떡을 그에게 주었다. 야훼께 바친 제사 떡밖에는 아무것도 없었기 때문이다. 그 날이 마침 더운 떡을 갈아놓는 날이었다.

그런데 그 날 거기에서 사울의 신하 하나가 야훼 앞에 들어가지 못하고 있었다. 그는 에돔 출신으로서 이름은 도엑이었는데 사울의 목자들 중에서 가장 힘센 사람이었다.

다윗이 아히멜렉에게 "왕명이 너무 급해서 칼은 물론 아무 무기도 가지고 오지 못했는데, 여기 창이나 칼이 없습니까?" 하고 물었다.

사제가 대답하였다. "장군이 느티나무 골짜기에서 죽인 불레셋 장수 골리앗의 칼밖에 없소이다. 보자기에 싸서 에봇 뒤에 두었는데 그것이라도 가질 생각이 있으면 가지시오. 이 곳에 다른 무기라곤 없소이다." 다윗은 "그만한 것이 어디 또 있겠습니까?" 하며 그것을 받아 가졌다.

So the priest gave him consecrated bread; for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence which was removed from before the LORD, in order to put hot bread in its place when it was taken away.

Now one of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the LORD; and his name was Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul's shepherds.

David said to Ahimelech, "Now is there not a spear or a sword on hand? For I brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's matter was urgent."

Then the priest said, "The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the valley of Elah, behold, it is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod; if you would take it for yourself, take it. For there is no other except it here." And David said, "There is none like it; give it to me."

Then David arose and fled that day from Saul, and went to Achish king of Gath.

사울을 피하여 도망치던 다윗은 그 날로 갓 나라 왕 아기스를 찾아갔다.

아기스의 신하들이 왕에게 보고하였다. "그 나라의 왕 다윗임에 틀림없습니다. 사람들이 춤추며, '사울은 수천을 치셨고, 다윗은 수만을 치셨다네.' 하며 찬양하던 바로 그 사람입니다."

이 말에 다윗은 가슴이 뜨끔했다. 그는 갓 나라 왕 아기스가 몹시 두려워

사람들 앞에서 일부러 미친 시늉을 하다가 사람들에게 붙잡혀서는 발작을 일으키고 성문짝에 글자를 되는 대로 써갈기기도 하며 수염에 침을 흘리기도 하였다.

이것을 보고 아기스가 신하들을 꾸짖었다. "미친놈이 아니냐? 어쩌자고 이런 자를 나에게 끌어 왔느냐?

But the servants of Achish said to him, "Is this not David the king of the land? Did they not sing of this one as they danced, saying, 'Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands'?"

David took these words to heart and greatly feared Achish king of Gath.

So he disguised his sanity before them, and acted insanely in their hands, and scribbled on the doors of the gate, and let his saliva run down into his beard.

Then Achish said to his servants, "Behold, you see the man behaving as a madman. Why do you bring him to me?

"Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this one to act the madman in my presence? Shall this one come into my house?"
