- 가이사리아에 고르넬리오라는 사람이 있었는데 그는 이탈리아 부대라는 로마 군대의 백인대장이었다.
- 그는 경건한 사람이어서 온 가족과 함께 하느님을 공경하고 유다인들에게 많은 자선을 베풀며 하느님께 늘 기도를 드리고 있었다.
- 어느 날 오후 세 시쯤 그는 신비로운 영상 가운데 나타난 하느님의 천사를 똑똑히 보았다. 천사는 집에 들어와서 "고르넬리오!" 하고 불렀다.
- 그는 천사를 바라보자 겁에 질려서 "주님, 무슨 일이십니까?" 하고 물었다. 천사는 "하느님께서 너의 기도와 자선을 받아들이시고 너를 기억하고 계신다.
- 이제 사람을 요빠로 보내어 베드로라고도 하는 시몬을 데려오너라.

- Now there was a man at Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian cohort,
- a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, and gave many alms to the Jewish people and prayed to God continually.
- About the ninth hour of the day he clearly saw in a vision an angel of God who had just come in and said to him, "Cornelius!"
- And fixing his gaze on him and being much alarmed, he said, "What is it, Lord?" And he said to him, "Your prayers and alms have ascended as a memorial before God.
- "Now dispatch some men to Joppa and send for a man named Simon, who is also called Peter;

- 베드로는 바닷가에 있는 피장이 시몬의 집에 머물고 있다." 하고 일러주었다.
- 천사가 이 말을 남기고 사라지자 고르넬리오는 하인 두 사람과 가까이 데리고 있는 경건한 병사 하나를 불러서
- 모든 일을 다 이야기해 준 다음 요빠로 보냈다.
- 길을 가던 일행이 그 이튿날 요빠 근처에 이르렀을 즈음에 베드로는 기도를 드리러 옥상에 올라가 있었다. 때는 낮 열두 시쯤이었다.
- 아래서는 점심을 준비하고 있었는데 베드로는 시장기가 들어 무엇을 좀 먹었으면 하는 생각을 하다가 무아지경에 빠져 들어갔다.

- he is staying with a tanner named Simon, whose house is by the sea."
- When the angel who was speaking to him had left, he summoned two of his servants and a devout soldier of those who were his personal attendants,
- and after he had explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.
- On the next day, as they were on their way and approaching the city, Peter went up on the housetop about the sixth hour to pray.
- But he became hungry and was desiring to eat; but while they were making preparations, he fell into a trance;

- 그러자 하늘이 열리고 큰 보자기와 같은 그릇이 네 귀퉁이에 끈이 달려서 땅으로 내려오는 것이 보였다.
- 그 속에는 온갖 네 발 가진 짐승과 땅을 기어 다니는 짐승과 하늘의 날짐승이 들어 있었다.
- 그 때 "베드로야, 어서 잡아먹어라." 하는 음성이 들려왔다.
- 베드로가 "절대로 안 됩니다, 주님. 저는 일찍이 속된 것이나 더러운 것은 한 번도 입에 대어본 적이 없습니다." 하고 대답하자
- "하느님께서 깨끗하게 만드신 것을 속되다고 하지 마라." 하는 음성이 다시 들려왔다.

- and he saw the sky opened up, and an object like a great sheet coming down, lowered by four corners to the ground,
- and there were in it all kinds of four-footed animals and crawling creatures of the earth and birds of the air.
- A voice came to him, "Get up, Peter, kill and eat!"
- But Peter said, "By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything unholy and unclean."
- Again a voice came to him a second time, "What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy."

- 이와 같은 말이 세 번 오고 간 뒤에 그 그릇은 갑자기 하늘로 들려 올라갔다.
- 베드로는 자기가 본 영상이 도대체 무슨 뜻일까 하고 혼자 어리둥절해 있었는데 마침 고르넬리오가 보낸 사람들이 시몬의 집을 찾아와 문 앞에 서 있었다.
- 그들은 사람을 불러내어 베드로라는 시몬이 거기에 머물러 있는지 물어보았다.
- 베드로는 아직도 자기가 본 일을 곰곰이 생각하고 있었는데 성령께서 베드로에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "지금 사람들이 와서 너를 찾고 있으니
- 어서 내려가서 주저하지 말고 그들과 함께 가거라. 그들은 내가 보낸 사람들이다."

- This happened three times, and immediately the object was taken up into the sky.
- Now while Peter was greatly perplexed in mind as to what the vision which he had seen might be, behold, the men who had been sent by Cornelius, having asked directions for Simon's house, appeared at the gate;
- and calling out, they were asking whether Simon, who was also called Peter, was staying there.
- While Peter was reflecting on the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Behold, three men are looking for you.
- "But get up, go downstairs and accompany them without misgivings, for I have sent them Myself."

- 베드로가 그들에게 내려가서 "당신들이 찾고 있는 사람이 바로 나요. 어떻게 오셨소?" 하고 묻자
- 그들은 "고르넬리오라는 백인대장의 심부름으로 왔습니다. 그는 의로운 사람이며 하느님을 공경하며 모든 유다인에게 존경을 받고 있습니다. 그는 거룩한 천사에게서 선생님을 집에 모셔다가 말씀을 들으라는 지시를 받고 우리를 보낸 것입니다." 하고 대답하였다.
- 베드로는 그들을 맞아들여 그 날 밤을 거기에서 묵게 했다. 이튿날 베드로는 채비를 차리고 그들과 함께 길을 떠났는데 요빠에 있는 몇몇 신도도 같이 갔다.

- Peter went down to the men and said, "Behold, I am the one you are looking for; what is the reason for which you have come?"
- They said, "Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous and God-fearing man well spoken of by the entire nation of the Jews, was divinely directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and hear a message from you."
- So he invited them in and gave them lodging. And on the next day he got up and went away with them, and some of the brethren from Joppa accompanied him.
