에스더

  본서는 아하수에로 왕의 통치 기간중 포로 귀환에 참여하지 않고 바사에 있던 유대 포로민들을 배경으로 에스더라는 한 지혜로운 유대 여인을 통하여 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들을 대적자들의 위협에서 어떻게 보호하셨는가를 밝히고 있다.

  왕후 와스디가 폐위된 후, 새로운 왕후로 간택된 에스더의 사촌 모르드개는 왕의 암살 음모를 사전에 알고 왕의 생명을 구하였다. 왕의 신임을 받던 하만은 자신에게 절하지 않은 모르드개에게 분개하여 유대 민족을 멸절시킬 것을 계획한다. 이에 에스더는 목숨을 내걸고 왕께 간청하게 되고, 모르드개의 업적과 하만의 계락이 드러나 하만은 처형되고 유대인의 승리 속에 부림절 축제가 거행된다.

 

 

에스더 1:1-2:23

 아하수에로 왕의 잔치에서 왕후 와스디는 왕의 명령을 거부함으로써 폐위되었다. 그리고 새 왕후로 에스더가 간택되었다. 모르드개는 왕을 모살하려는 두 내시의 음모를 에스더를 통해 보고하였고, 그의 이름은 궁중 일기에 기록되었다.
  
  와스디의 폐위(1:1-1:22)    
 
  1. ((1_1)아하스에로스 대왕 제이년 니산월 초하룻날 베냐민 지파에 속하는 모르드개가 꿈을 꾸었는데, 그는 야이르의 아들이며 야이르는 시므이의 아들이며 시므이는 키스의 아들이었다. (1_2)모르드개는 수사에 사는 유다인으로서 왕궁에서 높은 지위를 가진 사람이었다. (1_3)그는 바빌론 왕 느부갓네살이 유다의 왕 여고니야를 위시하여 예루살렘에서 잡아온 많은 포로들 중의 한 사람이었다. (1_4)그가 꾼 꿈이란 다음과 같은 것이었다. 울부짖는 소리와 대소동, 뇌성과 지진으로 지상은 온통 뒤죽박죽이었다. (1_5)그 때 두 마리 커다란 용이 다가서더니 금시라도 서로 싸울 기세를 보이며 크게 으르렁거렸다. (1_6)그 소리에 자극을 받아서 모든 민족들이 의로운 백성을 치려고 전쟁 준비를 하였다. 어둡고 음산한 날이 왔던 것이다. (1_7)그 날 온 땅은 고통과 번민과 불안과 대혼란으로 뒤덮였다. (1_8)의로운 백성은 자기들에게 닥쳐올 재앙을 눈앞에 보고 겁에 질려 최후의 한 사람까지 죽을 각오를 하고 하느님께 부르짖었다. (1_9)그 때에 그 부르짖는 소리에서, 마치 작은 샘에서 물이 흘러나오듯이 큰 강이 생겨나 물이 넘쳐흘렀다. (1_10)그러자 태양이 뜨고 날이 밝아지더니 그 비천한 백성이 높여져 힘센 자들을 집어삼켰다. (1_11)모르드개는 꿈에서 깨어나, 자기가 꾼 꿈과 그 속에 나타난 하느님의 계획에 대하여 생각하며 온종일 그 뜻이 무엇인가를 알아내려고 무진 애를 썼다.)
  2. 아하스에로스는 수도 수사 성에서 왕위에 올라,
  3. 나라를 다스린 지 삼 년째 되던 해에, 큰 잔치를 베풀고 고관 대작을 비롯하여 페르시아와 메대의 장군과 귀족과 각 지방 수령들을 초대하였다.
  4. 이리하여 왕은 백팔십 일이라는 오랜 시일에 걸쳐 왕실의 거창한 부귀와 눈부신 영화를 자랑하였다.
  5. 이 기간이 끝나자 왕은 다시 궁궐 안뜰 정원에다 칠 일 동안 잔치를 베풀고, 모든 수사 성민을 가리지 않고 초대하였다.
  1. Now it took place in the days of Ahasuerus, the Ahasuerus who reigned from India to Ethiopia over 127 provinces,
  2. in those days as King Ahasuerus sat on his royal throne which was at the citadel in Susa,
  3. in the third year of his reign he gave a banquet for all his princes and attendants, the army officers of Persia and Media, the nobles and the princes of his provinces being in his presence.
  4. And he displayed the riches of his royal glory and the splendor of his great majesty for many days, 180 days.
  5. When these days were completed, the king gave a banquet lasting seven days for all the people who were present at the citadel in Susa, from the greatest to the least, in the court of the garden of the king's palace.
  1. 정원에는 하얀 실과 자줏빛 털실로 짠 휘장이 쳐져 있었다. 그 휘장은 흰 대리석 기둥에 달린 은고리에 모시실과 붉은 털실로 꼰 끈으로 매어져 있었고, 반암석과 흰 대리석과 조개껍질과 갖가지 보석들을 박아 넣은 바닥에는 금은으로 만든 평상들이 마련되어 있었다.
  2. 갖가지 모양으로 된 금술잔이 나왔고, 왕이 내리는 술은 한이 없었다.
  3. 그러나 술을 마셔도 법도를 따라 억지로 마시게 하는 일은 없도록 하라는 왕의 분부가 있어 저마다 원하는 대로 마시게 하였다.
  4. 한편 와스디 왕후도 아하스에로스 왕궁에다 잔치를 베풀고 부인들을 초대하였다.
  5. 칠 일째 되는 날, 왕은 취흥이 돋아 자기를 모시는 일곱 내시 므후만, 비즈다, 하르보나, 비그다, 아박다, 제달, 가르가스에게
  1. There were hangings of fine white and violet linen held by cords of fine purple linen on silver rings and marble columns, and couches of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl and precious stones.
  2. Drinks were served in golden vessels of various kinds, and the royal wine was plentiful according to the king's bounty.
  3. The drinking was done according to the law, there was no compulsion, for so the king had given orders to each official of his household that he should do according to the desires of each person.
  4. Queen Vashti also gave a banquet for the women in the palace which belonged to King Ahasuerus.
  5. On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar and Carkas, the seven eunuchs who served in the presence of King Ahasuerus,
  1. "와스디 왕후를 화관으로 단장시켜 모셔 오너라." 하고 분부를 내렸다. 왕은 왕후의 아름다움을 백성과 고관들에게 자랑하고 싶었던 것이다.
  2. 그러나 와스디 왕후는 내시들이 전하는 말을 듣고도 나오지 않았다. 왕은 화가 치밀어올라 견딜 수가 없었다.
  3. 왕은 법에 밝은 학자들에게 이 일을 어떻게 다스리면 좋겠느냐고 물었다. 이런 일은 법학자와 법관들에게 문의하는 것이 관례가 되어 있었다.
  4. 페르시아와 메대 사람으로서 왕을 가까이 모시는 대신 일곱이 있었는데, 그들은 가르스나, 세달, 아드마다, 다르싯, 메레스, 마르스나, 므무간이었다. 그들은 높은 벼슬 자리에 앉아 왕을 가까이 모시는 사람들이었다.
  5. 왕이 그들에게 물었다. "내가 내시들을 시켜 내린 분부를 와스디 왕후가 거역했으니, 법대로 다스린다면 어떻게 해야 하겠소?"
  1. to bring Queen Vashti before the king with her royal crown in order to display her beauty to the people and the princes, for she was beautiful.
  2. But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king's command delivered by the eunuchs. Then the king became very angry and his wrath burned within him.
  3. Then the king said to the wise men who understood the times--for it was the custom of the king so to speak before all who knew law and justice
  4. and were close to him: Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media who had access to the king's presence and sat in the first place in the kingdom--
  5. "According to law, what is to be done with Queen Vashti, because she did not obey the command of King Ahasuerus delivered by the eunuchs?"
  1. 므무간이 앞으로 나서며 왕에게 이렇게 말하였다. "와스디 왕후는 임금님께만 잘못을 저지른 것이 아닙니다. 아하스에로스 왕국 각 지방에 있는 모든 신하들과 백성에게도 못할 일을 한 셈입니다.
  2. 왕후의 일은 틀림없이 모든 부녀자들에게 알려질 것입니다. 그렇게 되면, 부녀자들은 와스디 왕후가 임금님의 부르심을 받고도 어전에 나타나지 않았다더라고 하면서 남편을 업신여기게 될 것입니다.
  3. 왕후의 일은 오늘 당장 페르시아와 메대의 고관 부인들의 귀에 들어갈 것입니다. 그리고 저희들이 무엇이라고 하든지 그 말을 들으려고 하지 않을 것입니다. 저희 사내들 체면이 어떻게 되겠습니까?
  4. 그러니 임금님께서만 좋으시다면, 다시는 와스디가 어전에 나타나지 못하도록 명을 내리십시오. 그리고 이 일을 페르시아와 메대의 법령에 써 넣어 결코 뜯어 고치지 못하게 하시고 왕후의 자리는 그보다 나은 분에게 물려주십시오.
  5. 이 칙령이 이 큰 나라 방방곡곡에 공포되면, 모든 부녀자들은 위 아래 없이 남편을 공대할 것입니다."
  1. In the presence of the king and the princes, Memucan said, "Queen Vashti has wronged not only the king but also all the princes and all the peoples who are in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus.
  2. "For the queen's conduct will become known to all the women causing them to look with contempt on their husbands by saying, 'King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought in to his presence, but she did not come.'
  3. "This day the ladies of Persia and Media who have heard of the queen's conduct will speak in the same way to all the king's princes, and there will be plenty of contempt and anger.
  4. "If it pleases the king, let a royal edict be issued by him and let it be written in the laws of Persia and Media so that it cannot be repealed, that Vashti may no longer come into the presence of King Ahasuerus, and let the king give her royal position to another who is more worthy than she.
  5. "When the king's edict which he will make is heard throughout all his kingdom, great as it is, then all women will give honor to their husbands, great and small."
  1. 이 말이 왕과 대신들의 마음에 들었다. 왕은 므무간의 의견을 받아들여,
  2. 가정은 마땅히 남자가 다스려야 한다는 칙서를 각 지방의 문자와 각 민족의 말로 써서 전국에 돌렸다.
  1. This word pleased the king and the princes, and the king did as Memucan proposed.
  2. So he sent letters to all the king's provinces, to each province according to its script and to every people according to their language, that every man should be the master in his own house and the one who speaks in the language of his own people.
 
  왕후로 뽑힌 에스더(2:1-2:23)    
 
  1. 이런 일이 있은 지 얼마 뒤, 아하스에로스 왕은 노여움이 가라앉으면서 와스디 생각이 났다. 그리고 와스디에게 내린 처단이 마음에 걸렸다.
  2. 시종들이 그 낌새를 알아채고 왕에게 말했다.
  3. "이 나라 각 지방에 간선관을 두시어 아름다운 처녀들을 모두 수사 성에 모아들이십시오. 궁녀들을 맡아보는 내시 헤개에게 그들을 맡기어 몸치장을 시키신 다음
  4. 눈에 드시는 처녀를 와스디 대신 왕후로 삼으심이 좋을까 합니다." 왕은 그 말이 마음에 들어 그대로 하기로 하였다.
  5. 그 때 수사 성에는 모르드개라는 한 유다인이 살고 있었다. 그는 베냐민 지파에 속한 야이르의 아들로서, 할아버지는 시므이, 증조부는 키스였다.
  1. After these things when the anger of King Ahasuerus had subsided, he remembered Vashti and what she had done and what had been decreed against her.
  2. Then the king's attendants, who served him, said, "Let beautiful young virgins be sought for the king.
  3. "Let the king appoint overseers in all the provinces of his kingdom that they may gather every beautiful young virgin to the citadel of Susa, to the harem, into the custody of Hegai, the king's eunuch, who is in charge of the women; and let their cosmetics be given them.
  4. "Then let the young lady who pleases the king be queen in place of Vashti." And the matter pleased the king, and he did accordingly.
  5. Now there was at the citadel in Susa a Jew whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite,
  1. 모르드개는 유다 왕 여고니야가 바빌론 왕 느부갓네살에게 사로잡혀 올 때 예루살렘에서 함께 잡혀온 사람이었다.
  2. 그에게는 부모 없는 사촌 누이가 하나 있었는데 이름은 에스델이라고도 하고 하다사라고도 했다. 에스델은 몸매도 아름다웠고 용모도 단정하였다. 그는 양친을 여읜 뒤 모르드개의 양녀로 들어가 있었다.
  3. 어명이 공포되자 많은 아가씨들이 뽑히어 수사 성에 올라와 궁녀들을 맡아보는 헤개에게 맡겨졌다. 이렇게 궁궐에 불리어 와서 헤개에게 맡겨진 아가씨들 가운데 에스델도 끼여 있었다.
  4. 이 아가씨는 유난히 헤개의 눈에 들어 그의 굄을 받게 되었다. 헤개는 곧 몸치장에 쓰이는 것들과 음식을 주며 가장 좋은 궁에서 지내게 하고, 궁궐에서 시녀 일곱을 골라 그를 시중들게 하였다.
  5. 그런데 에스델은 모르드개가 일러준 대로 자기의 혈족과 인척 관계를 아무에게도 밝히지 않았다.
  1. who had been taken into exile from Jerusalem with the captives who had been exiled with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had exiled.
  2. He was bringing up Hadassah, that is Esther, his uncle's daughter, for she had no father or mother. Now the young lady was beautiful of form and face, and when her father and her mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter.
  3. So it came about when the command and decree of the king were heard and many young ladies were gathered to the citadel of Susa into the custody of Hegai, that Esther was taken to the king's palace into the custody of Hegai, who was in charge of the women.
  4. Now the young lady pleased him and found favor with him. So he quickly provided her with her cosmetics and food, gave her seven choice maids from the king's palace and transferred her and her maids to the best place in the harem.
  5. Esther did not make known her people or her kindred, for Mordecai had instructed her that she should not make them known.
  1. 한편 모르드개는 에스델의 일이 궁금하여 날마다 후궁 뜰 앞을 서성거렸다.
  2. 아가씨들은 열두 달 동안 몸을 다듬고 나서야 차례로 아하스에로스 왕 앞에 나가게 되어 있었다. 여섯 달 동안 몰약으로 몸을 다듬고 나머지 여섯 달은 부인용 향수와 화장수로 몸을 닦아야 했다.
  3. 아가씨들이 후궁에서 대궐로 들어갈 때면, 몸치장에 필요한 것은 무엇이든지 다 받을 수 있었다.
  4. 아가씨들은 하나씩 저녁에 들어갔다가 이튿날 아침에 후궁들을 돌보는 내시 사아스가즈가 관리하는 다른 궁으로 가게 되어 있었다. 그런데 왕이 그를 특별히 좋아하여 이름을 부르지 아니하면 다시는 그에게 나아가지 못하였다.
  5. 마침내 아비하일의 딸로서 사촌 오빠 모르드개의 양녀가 된 에스델의 차례가 왔다. 에스델은 궁녀를 맡아보는 내시 헤개가 정해 준 것밖에는 아무것도 달라고 하지 않았다. 그러나 에스델은 누가 보든지 아리따웠다.
  1. Every day Mordecai walked back and forth in front of the court of the harem to learn how Esther was and how she fared.
  2. Now when the turn of each young lady came to go in to King Ahasuerus, after the end of her twelve months under the regulations for the women--for the days of their beautification were completed as follows: six months with oil of myrrh and six months with spices and the cosmetics for women--
  3. the young lady would go in to the king in this way: anything that she desired was given her to take with her from the harem to the king's palace.
  4. In the evening she would go in and in the morning she would return to the second harem, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's eunuch who was in charge of the concubines. She would not again go in to the king unless the king delighted in her and she was summoned by name.
  5. Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai who had taken her as his daughter, came to go in to the king, she did not request anything except what Hegai, the king's eunuch who was in charge of the women, advised. And Esther found favor in the eyes of all who saw her.
  1. 에스델이 어전에 불려 들어간 것은 아하스에로스 칠년 시월, 곧 데벳월이었다.
  2. 왕은 다른 어느 여자보다도 에스델에게 마음이 기울었다. 그리하여 에스델은 모든 처녀를 물리치고 왕의 굄과 사랑을 독차지하게 되었다. 왕은 그의 머리에 화관을 씌우고 와스디를 대신하여 왕비로 삼았다.
  3. 그리고 왕은 고관 대작을 모두 초대하여 에스델 왕비 대관식을 크게 베풀고 전국 각 지방에 휴일을 선포하는 한편 후한 선물을 내렸다.
  4. 처녀들을 또다시 모집한 일이 있었다. 그 때 모르드개는 궁궐의 대문에서 일을 보고 있었다.
  5. 에스델은 여전히 모르드개가 일러준 대로 자기의 혈족과 인척 관계를 밝히지 않고 있었다. 모르드개의 슬하에 있을 때나 조금도 다름이 없이 그가 시키는 대로 하였다.
  1. So Esther was taken to King Ahasuerus to his royal palace in the tenth month which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.
  2. The king loved Esther more than all the women, and she found favor and kindness with him more than all the virgins, so that he set the royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.
  3. Then the king gave a great banquet, Esther's banquet, for all his princes and his servants; he also made a holiday for the provinces and gave gifts according to the king's bounty.
  4. When the virgins were gathered together the second time, then Mordecai was sitting at the king's gate.
  5. Esther had not yet made known her kindred or her people, even as Mordecai had commanded her; for Esther did what Mordecai told her as she had done when under his care.
  1. 모르드개가 궁궐 대문에서 일을 보고 있을 때, 마침 수문장이었던 내시 빅단과 테레스 둘이 왕에게 불만을 품고 암살을 꾀하고 있었다.
  2. 모르드개가 마침 이 낌새를 알아채고 에스델 왕비에게 고해 바쳤다. 왕비는 그 사실을 모르드개의 이름으로 왕에게 고했다.
  3. 조사한 결과 그것이 사실임이 드러나 두 사람은 교수형을 받았다. 이 일이 궁중실록에 기록되었다.
  1. In those days, while Mordecai was sitting at the king's gate, Bigthan and Teresh, two of the king's officials from those who guarded the door, became angry and sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus.
  2. But the plot became known to Mordecai and he told Queen Esther, and Esther informed the king in Mordecai's name.
  3. Now when the plot was investigated and found to be so, they were both hanged on a gallows; and it was written in the Book of the Chronicles in the king's presence.
