- 형제 여러분, 세상의 관례를 들어서 말해 봅시다. 사람들이 맺은 계약도 한번 맺은 다음에는 아무도 그것을 무효로 만들거나 무엇을 덧붙이거나 할 수 없는 것입니다.
- 하느님께서는 아브라함과 그의 후손에게 약속하실 때에 많은 사람을 가리키는 "후손들에게"라는 말 대신 한 사람만을 가리키는 "네 후손에게"라는 말을 쓰셨습니다. 한 사람이란 그리스도를 가리킵니다.
- 내가 말하려는 것은 이것입니다. 하느님께서 미리 맺어주신 계약이 사백삼십 년 후에 율법이 생겼다 해서 소멸되거나 그 약속이 무효가 될 수는 없다는 것입니다.
- 만일 법을 근거로 해서 상속을 받는 것이라면 그것은 벌써 약속된 것을 받는 것은 아닙니다. 그러나 하느님께서는 약속에 따라 아브라함에게 상속의 선물을 주신 것입니다.
- 그러면 율법은 무엇 때문에 있게 되었습니까? 그것은 약속된 그 후손이 오실 때까지 죄가 무엇인지 알게 하시려고 덧붙여주신 것입니다. 그리고 이 율법은 천사들을 통하여 중재자의 손을 거쳐 제정된 것입니다.

- Brethren, I speak in terms of human relations: even though it is only a man's covenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds conditions to it.
- Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed He does not say, "And to seeds," as referring to many, but rather to one, "And to your seed," that is, Christ.
- What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise.
- For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise.
- Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made.

- 그러나 하느님의 약속은 중재자를 내세우지 않고 하느님 한 분의 생각으로 하신 것입니다.
- 그렇다면 율법은 하느님의 약속과 반대되는 것이겠습니까? 절대로 그렇지 않습니다. 만일 사람에게 주어진 율법이 사람을 살릴 수 있는 것이었다면 사람은 율법에 의해서 하느님과 올바른 관계를 맺을 수 있었을 것입니다.
- 그러나 성서는 온 세상이 죄에 갇혀 있다고 말합니다. 따라서 예수 그리스도를 믿는 사람들만이 그 믿음으로 약속된 선물을 받을 수 있게 되었습니다.
- 믿음의 시대가 오기 전에는 우리가 율법의 감시를 받았으며 믿음이 나타날 때까지 갇혀 있었습니다.
- 율법은 그리스도께서 오실 때까지 우리의 후견인 구실을 하였습니다. 그러나 그리스도께서 오신 뒤에는 우리가 믿음을 통하여 하느님과 올바른 관계를 맺게 되었습니다.

- Now a mediator is not for one party only; whereas God is only one.
- Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law.
- But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
- But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed.
- Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.

- 이렇게 믿음의 때가 이미 왔으니 우리에게는 이제 후견인이 필요하지 않습니다.
- 여러분은 모두 믿음으로 그리스도 예수와 함께 삶으로써 하느님의 자녀가 되었습니다.
- 세례를 받아서 그리스도 안으로 들어간 여러분은 모두 그리스도를 옷 입듯이 입었습니다.
- 유다인이나 그리스인이나 종이나 자유인이나 남자나 여자나 아무런 차별이 없습니다. 그리스도 예수 안에서 여러분은 모두 한 몸을 이루었기 때문입니다.
- 여러분이 그리스도에게 속했다면 여러분은 아브라함의 자손이며 따라서 약속에 의한 상속자들입니다.

- But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.
- For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
- For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
- There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
- And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise.
