- 원로인 나는 선택받은 귀부인과 그 자녀들에게 이 편지를 씁니다. 나는 여러분을 진정으로 사랑합니다. 나뿐만 아니라 진리를 아는 모든 사람들이 여러분을 사랑합니다.
- 지금 우리 안에 있고 또 영원히 우리와 함께 있을 진리 때문에 우리는 여러분을 사랑합니다.
- 진리와 사랑으로 살아가는 우리에게 하느님 아버지와 그 아들 예수 그리스도께서 은총과 자비와 평화를 내려주시기를 빕니다.
- 당신의 자녀들 가운데 아버지께서 우리에게 명령하신 대로 진리를 좇아서 사는 사람들이 있다는 것을 알고 나는 매우 기뻤습니다.
- 내가 지금 귀부인께 청하는 것은 우리가 서로 사랑하자는 것입니다. 내가 지금 써 보내는 것은 새로운 계명이 아니라 우리가 처음부터 받은 계명입니다.

- The elder to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth; and not only I, but also all who know the truth,
- for the sake of the truth which abides in us and will be with us forever:
- Grace, mercy and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
- I was very glad to find some of your children walking in truth, just as we have received commandment to do from the Father.
- Now I ask you, lady, not as though I were writing to you a new commandment, but the one which we have had from the beginning, that we love one another.

- 하느님의 계명을 따르는 것이 곧 사랑입니다. 그리고 그 계명은 여러분이 처음부터 들은 대로 사랑을 따라서 살라는 것입니다.
- 내가 이 말을 하는 것은 속이는 자들이 세상에 많이 나타났기 때문입니다. 그들은 예수 그리스도께서 사람의 몸으로 오셨다는 것을 인정하지 않습니다. 이런 자는 속이는 자이고 그리스도의 적입니다.
- 스스로 조심하십시오. 여러분이 수고해서 얻은 것을 잃지 말고 상을 남김없이 받도록 하십시오.
- 그리스도의 교훈을 지키지 않고 지나치게 앞서 나가는 자는 누구든지 하느님을 모시지 않는 자입니다. 그리스도의 교훈을 지키는 사람은 하느님 아버지와 그 아들을 함께 모시는 사람입니다.
- 만일 누가 여러분을 찾아가서 이 교훈과 다른 것을 전하거든 그를 집 안으로 받아들이지도 말고 인사도 하지 마십시오.

- And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments This is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.
- For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh This is the deceiver and the antichrist.
- Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward.
- Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son.
- If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting;

- 그런 자에게 인사를 하면 그의 악한 사업에 참여하는 것이 됩니다.
- 여러분에게 쓰고 싶은 말이 많지만, 그것을 잉크로 종이에다 적어 보내고 싶지는 않습니다. 내가 여러분에게 가서 직접 대면하고 이야기를 나누고 싶습니다. 그러면 우리는 충만한 기쁨을 누리게 될 것입니다.
