	열왕기상 19:1-20:21 갈멜 산상의 대승으로 우상을 타파하고 야웨 신앙을 재건할 수 있으리라 기대했던 엘리야는 오히려 이세벨이 더 혹독한 보복 행위에 나서자 심히 낙심하여 도피하였다. 실의와 비탄에 잠겨 있던 엘리야는 호렙 산에서 하나님을 만나 위로를 받고 새로운 힘과 사명을 부여받았다. 한편 아람 왕 벤하닷이 사마리아를 침공했지만, 아합군은 한 선지자의 도움으로 대승을 거두었다.

	호렙 산에서 하나님을 만남(19:1-19:21)

아합이 엘리야가 행한 모든 일과 그가 어떻게 모든 선지자를 칼로 죽였는지를 이세벨에게 말하니

이세벨이 사신을 엘리야에게 보내어 이르되 내가 내일 이맘때에는 반드시 네 생명을 저 사람들 중 한 사람의 생명과 같게 하리라 그렇게 하지 아니하면 신들이 내게 벌 위에 벌을 내림이 마땅하니라 한지라

그가 이 형편을 보고 일어나 자기의 생명을 위해 도망하여 유다에 속한 브엘세바에 이르러 자기의 사환을 그 곳에 머물게 하고

자기 자신은 광야로 들어가 하룻길쯤 가서 한 로뎀 나무 아래에 앉아서 자기가 죽기를 원하여 이르되 여호와여 넉넉하오니 지금 내 생명을 거두시옵소서 나는 내 조상들보다 낫지 못하니이다 하고

로뎀 나무 아래에 누워 자더니 천사가 그를 어루만지며 그에게 이르되 일어나서 먹으라 하는지라

Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.

So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, "May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them."

Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there,

while he himself went a day's journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. "I have had enough, LORD," he said. "Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors."

Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, "Get up and eat."

본즉 머리맡에 숯불에 구운 떡과 한 병 물이 있더라 이에 먹고 마시고 다시 누웠더니

여호와의 천사가 또 다시 와서 어루만지며 이르되 일어나 먹으라 네가 갈 길을 다 가지 못할까 하노라 하는지라

이에 일어나 먹고 마시고 그 음식물의 힘을 의지하여 사십 주 사십 야를 가서 하나님의 산 호렙에 이르니라

엘리야가 그 곳 굴에 들어가 거기서 머물더니 여호와의 말씀이 그에게 임하여 이르시되 엘리야야 네가 어찌하여 여기 있느냐

그가 대답하되 내가 만군의 하나님 여호와께 열심이 유별하오니 이는 이스라엘 자손이 주의 언약을 버리고 주의 제단을 헐며 칼로 주의 선지자들을 죽였음이오며 오직 나만 남았거늘 그들이 내 생명을 찾아 빼앗으려 하나이다

He looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, "Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you."

So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

There he went into a cave and spent the night. And the word of the LORD came to him: "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too."

여호와께서 이르시되 너는 나가서 여호와 앞에서 산에 서라 하시더니 여호와께서 지나가시는데 여호와 앞에 크고 강한 바람이 산을 가르고 바위를 부수나 바람 가운데에 여호와께서 계시지 아니하며 바람 후에 지진이 있으나 지진 가운데에도 여호와께서 계시지 아니하며

또 지진 후에 불이 있으나 불 가운데에도 여호와께서 계시지 아니하더니 불 후에 세미한 소리가 있는지라

엘리야가 듣고 겉옷으로 얼굴을 가리고 나가 굴 어귀에 서매 소리가 그에게 임하여 이르시되 엘리야야 네가 어찌하여 여기 있느냐

그가 대답하되 내가 만군의 하나님 여호와께 열심이 유별하오니 이는 이스라엘 자손이 주의 언약을 버리고 주의 제단을 헐며 칼로 주의 선지자들을 죽였음이오며 오직 나만 남았거늘 그들이 내 생명을 찾아 빼앗으려 하나이다

여호와께서 그에게 이르시되 너는 네 길을 돌이켜 광야를 통하여 다메섹에 가서 이르거든 하사엘에게 기름을 부어 아람의 왕이 되게 하고

The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.

After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too."

The LORD said to him, "Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram.

너는 또 님시의 아들 예후에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘의 왕이 되게 하고 또 아벨므홀라 사밧의 아들 엘리사에게 기름을 부어 너를 대신하여 선지자가 되게 하라

하사엘의 칼을 피하는 자를 예후가 죽일 것이요 예후의 칼을 피하는 자를 엘리사가 죽이리라

그러나 내가 이스라엘 가운데에 칠천 명을 남기리니 다 바알에게 무릎을 꿇지 아니하고 다 바알에게 입맞추지 아니한 자니라

엘리야가 거기서 떠나 사밧의 아들 엘리사를 만나니 그가 열두 겨릿소를 앞세우고 밭을 가는데 자기는 열두째 겨릿소와 함께 있더라 엘리야가 그리로 건너가서 겉옷을 그의 위에 던졌더니

그가 소를 버리고 엘리야에게로 달려가서 이르되 청하건대 나를 내 부모와 입맞추게 하소서 그리한 후에 내가 당신을 따르리이다 엘리야가 그에게 이르되 돌아가라 내가 네게 어떻게 행하였느냐 하니라

Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.

Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.

Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel--all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and all whose mouths have not kissed him."

So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him.

Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. "Let me kiss my father and mother good-by," he said, "and then I will come with you." "Go back," Elijah replied. "What have I done to you?"

엘리사가 그를 떠나 돌아가서 한 겨릿소를 가져다가 잡고 소의 기구를 불살라 그 고기를 삶아 백성에게 주어 먹게 하고 일어나 엘리야를 따르며 수종 들었더라

So Elisha left him and went back. He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his attendant.

	아람과의 전쟁(20:1-20:21)

아람의 벤하닷 왕이 그의 군대를 다 모으니 왕 삼십이 명이 그와 함께 있고 또 말과 병거들이 있더라 이에 올라가서 사마리아를 에워싸고 그 곳을 치며

사자들을 성 안에 있는 이스라엘의 아합 왕에게 보내 이르기를 벤하닷이 그에게 이르되

네 은금은 내 것이요 네 아내들과 네 자녀들의 아름다운 자도 내 것이니라 하매

이스라엘의 왕이 대답하여 말하기를 내 주 왕이여 왕의 말씀 같이 나와 내 것은 다 왕의 것이니이다 하였더니

사신들이 다시 와서 이르되 벤하닷이 이르노라 내가 이미 네게 사람을 보내어 말하기를 너는 네 은금과 아내들과 자녀들을 내게 넘기라 하였거니와

Now Ben-Hadad king of Aram mustered his entire army. Accompanied by thirty-two kings with their horses and chariots, he went up and besieged Samaria and attacked it.

He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel, saying, "This is what Ben-Hadad says:

'Your silver and gold are mine, and the best of your wives and children are mine.' "

The king of Israel answered, "Just as you say, my lord the king. I and all I have are yours."

The messengers came again and said, "This is what Ben-Hadad says: 'I sent to demand your silver and gold, your wives and your children.

내일 이맘때에 내가 내 신하들을 네게 보내리니 그들이 네 집과 네 신하들의 집을 수색하여 네 눈이 기뻐하는 것을 그들의 손으로 잡아 가져가리라 한지라

이에 이스라엘 왕이 나라의 장로를 다 불러 이르되 너희는 이 사람이 악을 도모하고 있는 줄을 자세히 알라 그가 내 아내들과 내 자녀들과 내 은금을 빼앗으려고 사람을 내게 보냈으나 내가 거절하지 못하였노라

모든 장로와 백성들이 다 왕께 아뢰되 왕은 듣지도 말고 허락하지도 마옵소서 한지라

그러므로 왕이 벤하닷의 사신들에게 이르되 너희는 내 주 왕께 말하기를 왕이 처음에 보내 종에게 구하신 것은 내가 다 그대로 하려니와 이것은 내가 할 수 없나이다 하라 하니 사자들이 돌아가서 보고하니라

그 때에 벤하닷이 다시 그에게 사람을 보내어 이르되 사마리아의 부스러진 것이 나를 따르는 백성의 무리의 손에 채우기에 족할 것 같으면 신들이 내게 벌 위에 벌을 내림이 마땅하니라 하매

But about this time tomorrow I am going to send my officials to search your palace and the houses of your officials. They will seize everything you value and carry it away.' "

The king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said to them, "See how this man is looking for trouble! When he sent for my wives and my children, my silver and my gold, I did not refuse him."

The elders and the people all answered, "Don't listen to him or agree to his demands."

So he replied to Ben-Hadad's messengers, "Tell my lord the king, 'Your servant will do all you demanded the first time, but this demand I cannot meet.' " They left and took the answer back to Ben-Hadad.

Then Ben-Hadad sent another message to Ahab: "May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if enough dust remains in Samaria to give each of my men a handful."

이스라엘 왕이 대답하여 이르되 갑옷 입는 자가 갑옷 벗는 자 같이 자랑하지 못할 것이라 하라 하니라

그 때에 벤하닷이 왕들과 장막에서 마시다가 이 말을 듣고 그의 신하들에게 이르되 너희는 진영을 치라 하매 곧 성읍을 향하여 진영을 치니라

한 선지자가 이스라엘의 아합 왕에게 나아가서 이르되 여호와의 말씀이 네가 이 큰 무리를 보느냐 내가 오늘 그들을 네 손에 넘기리니 너는 내가 여호와인 줄을 알리라 하셨나이다

아합이 이르되 누구를 통하여 그렇게 하시리이까 대답하되 여호와의 말씀이 각 지방 고관의 청년들로 하리라 하셨나이다 아합이 이르되 누가 싸움을 시작하리이까 대답하되 왕이니이다

아합이 이에 각 지방 고관의 청년들을 계수하니 이백삼십이 명이요 그 외에 모든 백성 곧 이스라엘의 모든 자손을 계수하니 칠천 명이더라

The king of Israel answered, "Tell him: 'One who puts on his armor should not boast like one who takes it off.' "

Ben-Hadad heard this message while he and the kings were drinking in their tents, and he ordered his men: "Prepare to attack." So they prepared to attack the city.

Meanwhile a prophet came to Ahab king of Israel and announced, "This is what the LORD says: 'Do you see this vast army? I will give it into your hand today, and then you will know that I am the LORD.' "

"But who will do this?" asked Ahab. The prophet replied, "This is what the LORD says: 'The young officers of the provincial commanders will do it.' " "And who will start the battle?" he asked. The prophet answered, "You will."

So Ahab summoned the young officers of the provincial commanders, 232 men. Then he assembled the rest of the Israelites, 7,000 in all.

그들이 정오에 나가니 벤하닷은 장막에서 돕는 왕 삼십이 명과 더불어 마시고 취한 중이라

각 지방의 고관의 청년들이 먼저 나갔더라 벤하닷이 정탐꾼을 보냈더니 그들이 보고하여 이르되 사마리아에서 사람들이 나오더이다 하매

그가 이르되 화친하러 나올지라도 사로잡고 싸우러 나올지라도 사로잡으라 하니라

각 지방 고관의 청년들과 그들을 따르는 군대가 성읍에서 나가서

각각 적군을 쳐죽이매 아람 사람이 도망하는지라 이스라엘이 쫓으니 아람 왕 벤하닷이 말을 타고 마병과 더불어 도망하여 피하니라

They set out at noon while Ben-Hadad and the 32 kings allied with him were in their tents getting drunk.

The young officers of the provincial commanders went out first. Now Ben-Hadad had dispatched scouts, who reported, "Men are advancing from Samaria."

He said, "If they have come out for peace, take them alive; if they have come out for war, take them alive."

The young officers of the provincial commanders marched out of the city with the army behind them

and each one struck down his opponent. At that, the Arameans fled, with the Israelites in pursuit. But Ben-Hadad king of Aram escaped on horseback with some of his horsemen.

이스라엘 왕이 나가서 말과 병거를 치고 또 아람 사람을 쳐서 크게 이겼더라

The king of Israel advanced and overpowered the horses and chariots and inflicted heavy losses on the Arameans.
