- 나의 믿음의 자녀들이여, 여러분이 죄를 짓지 않게 하려고 나는 이 편지를 씁니다. 그러나 만일 누가 죄를 짓더라도 아버지 앞에서 우리를 변호해 주시는 의로우신 예수 그리스도가 계십니다.
- 그분은 우리 죄를 위해 화해의 제물이 되셨습니다. 우리 죄만 아니라 온 세상의 죄를 위해 그렇게 되신 것입니다.
- 우리가 하나님의 계명을 지키면 이것으로 우리는 그분을 안다는 확신을 갖게 됩니다.
- 하나님을 안다고 하면서 그분의 계명을 지키지 않는 사람은 거짓말장이며 진리가 그 속에 있지 않습니다.
- 그러나 누구든지 하나님의 말씀을 지키면 하나님의 사랑이 그에게서 완전해집니다. 이것으로 우리는 그분 안에 있다는 것을 알게 됩니다.

- My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
- He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
- We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands.
- The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
- But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him:

- 하나님 안에서 산다고 하는 사람은 예수님이 하신 것과 똑같이 살아야 합니다.
- 사랑하는 여러분, 내가 여러분에게 새 계명을 쓰는 것이 아니라 여러분이 처음부터 가졌던 옛 계명을 쓰고 있습니다. 이 옛 계명은 여러분이 이미 들은 말씀입니다.
- 그러나 내가 다시 여러분에게 새 계명을 씁니다. 어두움이 지나가고 참 빛이 벌써 비치고 있으므로 그 계명은 그리스도와 여러분에게 참된 것입니다.
- 빛 가운데 산다고 하면서 형제를 미워하면 아직도 어두움 속에 사는 사람입니다.
- 형제를 사랑하는 사람은 빛 가운데 살기 때문에 자기에게 거리낄 만한 것이 없습니다.

- Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.
- Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard.
- Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.
- Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness.
- Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble.

- 그러나 형제를 미워하는 사람은 아직도 어두움 속에 있고 어두움 속에서 살고 있는 것입니다. 어두움이 그의 눈을 멀게 했기 때문에 그는 자기가 어디로 가고 있는지 알지 못합니다.
- 자녀들이여, 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분의 죄가 예수님의 이름으로 용서를 받기 때문입니다.
- 부모들이여, 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분이 세상이 창조되기 전부터 계신 분을 알기 때문입니다. 청년들이여, 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분이 악한 자를 이겼기 때문입니다.
- 자녀들이여, 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분이 하나님 아버지를 알고 있기 때문입니다. 부모들이여, 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분이 맨 처음부터 계신 분을 알기 때문입니다. 청년들이여, 내가 이 편지를 쓰는 것은 여러분이 언제나 하나님의 말씀에 굳게 서서 마귀를 이겼기 때문입니다.
- 여러분은 세상이나 세상에 속한 것들을 사랑하지 마십시오. 누구든지 세상을 사랑하면 그 사람에게는 하나님 아버지에 대한 사랑이 없습니다.

- But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.
- I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
- I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, dear children, because you have known the Father.
- I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
- Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

- 세상에 있는 모든 것, 곧 육신의 정욕과 눈의 욕심과 삶에 대한 자랑은 모두 아버지에게서 나온 것이 아니라 세상에서 나온 것입니다.
- 이 세상도 그것에 대한 욕망도 다 지나가지만 하나님의 뜻을 행하는 사람은 영원히 삽니다.

- For everything in the world--the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world.
- The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.
