	사무엘상 11:1-13:23 왕으로 선출되었으나 명목상의 왕에 불과하던 사울은 길르앗 야베스 전투에서 승리함으로 왕권을 확립하였다. 사무엘은 백성들에게 고별 설교를 통해 그들의 잘못을 지적하며, 오직 하나님을 경외할 것을 권고했다. 블레셋과의 전투에 임한 사울이 전세가 위급한 가운데 하나님께 잘못된 제사를 드리자 사무엘은 그의 왕권이 길지 못할 것을 예고했다.

	사울의 야베스 구원(11:1-11:15)

그 후에 암몬 사람 나하스가 길르앗의 야베스성을 치기 위해 군대를 이끌고 와서 포진하자 야베스 사람들은 나하스에게 '우리와 조약을 맺읍시다. 그러면 우리가 당신들의 종이 되겠소.' 하였다.

그때 나하스는 '좋다. 하지만 한 가지 조건에 있다. 내가 너희 오른눈을 모조리 뽑아 온 이스라엘의 치욕거리로 삼겠다.' 하고 대답하였다.

그래서 야베스 지도자들은 다시 간청하였다. '우리가 이스라엘 전역에 사자를 보낼 수 있도록 일 주일간만 여유를 주시오. 그래도 우리를 도울 자가 없으면 우리가 당신의 조건에 응하겠소.'

사자들이 사울의 고향인 기브아에 달려가서 백성들에게 이 소식을 전하자 모든 사람들이 통곡하기 시작하였다.

바로 그때 밭을 갈다가 집에 돌아온 사울은 곳곳에서 들려오는 울음소리를 듣고 '무슨 일이오? 어째서 모두 이렇게 울고 있소?' 하고 물었다. 그래서 백성들은 그에게 야베스 사람들이 말한 것을 그대로 일러 주었다.

Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.

Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.

사울은 그들의 말을 들을 때에 하나님의 성령에 크게 감동되어 강한 분노를 느꼈다

그래서 그는 소 두 마리를 끌어다가 여러 토막으로 잘라 사자들에게 주면서 이것을 이스라엘 전 지역으로 들고 다니며 이렇게 외치라고 지시하였다. '누구든지 사울과 사무엘을 따라 나서지 않는 자는 그의 소들에게도 이렇게 하겠다!' 그러자 백성들은 여호와를 두려워하여 하나같이 달려 나왔다.

사울이 그들을 베섹에 집결시키고 인원을 점검한 결과 이스라엘 사람이 300,000명이며 유다 사람이 30,000명이었다.

그런 다음 사울은 사자들을 길르앗의 야베스로 돌려보내며 '내일 정오까지 우리가 당신들을 구출하겠소.' 하였다. 사자들이 돌아가서 이 소식을 전하자 야베스 사람들은 무척 기뻐하였다.

그리고 그들은 나하스에게 '항복합니다. 내일 우리가 당신들에게 나갈 테니 당신들이 좋을 대로 하시오.' 하였다.

And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.

다음 날 새벽 사울은 병력을 세 부대로 나누고 암몬군을 기습하여 그들을 정오까지 쳐죽였다. 그래서 살아 남은 자들은 뿔뿔이 흩어져 단 두 사람도 함께 남은 자가 없었다.

그러자 백성들은 '사울이 우리의 왕이 되어서는 안 된다고 말한 자가 누구입니까? 그들을 끌어내십시오. 우리가 죽여 버리겠습니다.' 하고 사무엘에게 말하였다.

그러나 사울이 그들에게 '오늘은 여호와께서 이스라엘을 구출한 날이므로 아무도 사람을 죽여서는 안 됩니다.' 하였다.

그때 사무엘이 백성들에게 '자, 우리 모두 길갈로 가서 다시 한번 사울을 우리의 왕으로 선포합시다!' 하고 외치자

모든 백성은 길갈로 가 여호와 앞에서 사울을 왕으로 선포하고 그를 왕위에 앉혔다. 그런 다음 그들은 여호와께 화목제를 드리고 사울과 함께 거기서 크게 기뻐하였다.

And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.

Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

	사무엘의 고별사(12:1-12:25)

그때 사무엘이 백성들에게 다시 말하였다. '나는 여러분의 요구대로 여러분에게 왕을 세워 주었습니다.

보십시오. 지금 왕은 여러분 앞에 있습니다. 이제 나는 늙어 백발이 되었고 내 아들들은 여러분과 함께 있습니다. 나는 어릴 때부터 지금까지 여러분의 지도자로 일해 왔습니다.

지금 내가 여호와 앞과 그의 택할 왕 앞에 섰으니 내가 잘못한 것이 있으면 말해 보십시오. 내가 누구의 소나 나귀를 뺏은 일이 있습니까? 여러분을 속이거나 못 살게 군 일이 있습니까? 뇌물을 받은 적이 있습니까? 내가 잘못한 것이 있으면 무엇이든지 말하십시오. 그러면 모든 것을 갚아 드리겠습니다.'

그러자 백성들이 대답하였다. '당신은 우리를 속이거나 못 살게 군 일이 없으며 단 한 번도 뇌물을 받은 일이 없습니다.'

'여러분이 내게서 아무 죄도 찾아내지 못한 이 일에 대해서 여호와와 그 분의 택한 왕이 증인입니다.' '그렇습니다. 여호와께서 우리의 증인이 되셨습니다.'

And Samuel said unto all Israel, Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king over you.

And now, behold, the king walketh before you: and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day.

Behold, here I am: witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.

And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken ought of any man's hand.

And he said unto them, The LORD is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found ought in my hand. And they answered, He is witness.

그러자 사무엘이 백성들에게 이렇게 말하였다. '모세와 아론을 세우시고 여러분의 조상들을 이집트에서 인도해내신 분은 바로 여호와이십니다.

이제 여러분은 여기 조용히 서 계십시오. 여호와께서 여러분과 여러분의 조상들을 위해 행하신 모든 선한 일에 대하여 내가 여호와 앞에서 여러분과 하나하나 따져가며 말씀드리겠습니다.

여러분의 조상들이 이집트에서 도와 달라고 여호와께 부르짖자 여호와께서는 모세와 아론을 보내 그들을 이 땅으로 인도해 내셨습니다.

그러나 그들은 곧 그들의 하나님 여호와를 잊어버렸습니다. 그래서 여호와께서는 하솔 왕의 군대 총사령관 시스라와 블레셋 사람과 모압 왕에게 그들을 넘겨 주셨습니다.

그때 백성들은 다시 여호와께 부르짖으며 '우리가 여호와를 버리고 이방 우상 바알과 아스다롯을 섬겨 범죄하였습니다. 이제 우리를 원수들의 손에서 구해 주소서. 그러면 우리가 당신을 섬기겠습니다.' 하고 애원하였습니다.

And Samuel said unto the people, It is the LORD that advanced Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.

Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the LORD of all the righteous acts of the LORD, which he did to you and to your fathers.

When Jacob was come into Egypt, and your fathers cried unto the LORD, then the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, which brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and made them dwell in this place.

And when they forgat the LORD their God, he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.

And they cried unto the LORD, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken the LORD, and have served Baalim and Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.

그래서 여호와께서는 기드온과 바락과 입다와 나 사무엘을 보내 여러분을 원수들의 손에서 구출하여 안전하게 살 수 있도록 해 주셨습니다.

그러나 여러분은 암몬 왕 나하스를 두려워하여 여호와 하나님이 여러분의 왕인데도 불구하고 나에게 와서 여러분을 다스릴 왕을 세워 달라고 요구하였습니다.

보십시오. 이제 여러분이 택한 왕이 여기 있습니다. 여러분이 왕을 요구하였으므로 여호와께서 여러분의 요구를 들어주셨습니다.

만일 여러분이 여호와를 두려운 마음으로 섬기고 그분이 명령하신 것을 거역하지 않고 그대로 순종하며 또 여러분과 여러분의 왕이 여러분의 하나님 여호와를 따르면 모든 일이 순조로울 것입니다.

그러나 만일 여러분이 여호와의 명령을 거역하고 순종하지 않으면 그 때는 여호와께서 여러분의 조상을 벌하신 것처럼 여러분을 무섭게 벌하실 것입니다.

And the LORD sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelled safe.

And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the LORD your God was your king.

Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have desired! and, behold, the LORD hath set a king over you.

If ye will fear the LORD, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the LORD your God:

But if ye will not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall the hand of the LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers.

이제 여러분은 여호와께서 행하시는 놀라운 일을 지켜보십시오.

여러분도 알겠지만 밀을 추수하는 이맘때는 비 오는 계절이 아닙니다. 그러나 내가 기도하면 여호와께서 우뢰와 비를 보내실 것입니다. 이제 여러분은 왕을 요구한 그 죄가 얼마나 크다는 것을 알게 될 것입니다.'

그리고서 사무엘이 기도하자 여호와께서 우뢰와 비를 보내셨다. 그러자 모든 백성이 이것을 보고 여호와와 사무엘을 몹시 두려워하며

사무엘에게 이렇게 말하였다. '우리를 위해서 당신의 하나님 여호와께 기도하여 제발 우리가 죽지 않게 해 주십시오. 우리는 우리가 지은 모든 죄 외에도 왕을 요구하여 또 하나의 다른 죄를 범했습니다.'

그러자 사무엘은 '두려워하지 마십시오.' 하고 백성들을 안심시키며 다시 말을 이었다. '여러분이 지금까지는 그런 악한 짓을 하였으나 이제는 여호와를 떠나지 말고 그분을 진심으로 섬기십시오.

Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which the LORD will do before your eyes.

Is it not wheat harvest to day? I will call unto the LORD, and he shall send thunder and rain; that ye may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking you a king.

So Samuel called unto the LORD; and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.

And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.

And Samuel said unto the people, Fear not: ye have done all this wickedness: yet turn not aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart;

여러분은 거짓 신들을 좇아서는 안 됩니다. 그들은 무익하므로 여러분을 도와 줄 수도 없고 구원할 수도 없습니다.

여호와께서는 여러분을 자기 백성으로 삼으신 것을 기뻐하시기 때문에 그분의 위대하신 이름을 생각해서도 여러분을 버리지 않으실 것입니다.

그리고 나는 여러분을 위해 기도하는 일을 중단함으로 여호와께 범죄하지 않을 것이며 계속 선하고 옳은 것을 여러분에게 가르칠 것입니다.

여러분은 여호와를 두려워하고 마음을 다하여 진심으로 그분을 섬기십시오. 그리고 그분이 여러분을 위해 행하신 그 모든 놀라운 일들도 잊어서는 안 됩니다.

그러나 만일 여러분이 계속 죄를 범하면 여러분과 여러분의 왕이 다 멸망할 것입니다.'

And turn ye not aside: for then should ye go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain.

For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name's sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his people.

Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:

Only fear the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he hath done for you.

But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye and your king.

	사무엘의 책망(13:1-13:23)

사울은 왕이 되어 이스라엘을 다스린 지 2년째에 이스라엘 백성을 모으고 그 중에서 3,000명을 골라 2,000명은 자기와 함께 믹마스와 벧엘산에 있게 하고 나머지 1,000명은 그의 아들 요나단과 함께 베냐민 지파의 땅 기브아에 있게 하였으며 남은 백성은 모두 집으로 돌려보냈다.

(1절과 같음)

그때 요나단이 게바에 있는 블레셋 사람의 주둔군을 쳐서 죽이자 이 소식이 순식간에 블레셋 땅에 전해졌다. 그래서 사울은 전국 각처에 나팔을 불게하여 그가 블레셋 주둔군을 죽여 이스라엘 사람이 블레셋 사람에게 증오의 대상이 되었다는 것을 알리도록 하였다. 그러자 이스라엘 백성들은 이 소식을 듣고 길갈에 모여 사울을 따랐다

한편 블레셋 사람들은 이스라엘과 싸우려고 막강한 군대를 이끌고 올라와 벧-아웬 동쪽의 믹마스에 진을 쳤는데 전차 30,000대와 마병 6,000명을 가진 그들의 병력은 해변의 모래알처럼 많았다.

Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,

Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.

And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.

And all Israel heard say that Saul had smitten a garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel also was had in abomination with the Philistines. And the people were called together after Saul to Gilgal.

And the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the sea shore in multitude: and they came up, and pitched in Michmash, eastward from Bethaven.

이때 적의 어마어마한 병력을 보고 사태가 다급해진 이스라엘 사람들은 완전히 전의를 상실하고 굴과 수풀과 바위틈과 빈 무덤과 웅덩이를 찾아 숨었고

어떤 사람들은 요단강을 건너 갓과 길르앗 땅으로 도망치기도 하였다. 그러나 사울은 아직 길갈에 머물러 있었고 그와 함께 있는 사람들은 다가올 위험을 생각하며 무서워서 떨고 있었다.

거기서 사울은 사무엘의 지시대로 그를 7일 동안 기다렸으나 사무엘은 그때까지 오지 않았다. 그러자 남아 있던 사람들마저 하나씩 둘씩 뿔뿔이 흩어지기 시작하였다.

그래서 사울은 번제물과 화목제물을 가져오게 하여 그것을 직접 불로 태워 드렸다.

그러나 그가 막 제사를 다 드렸을 때 사무엘이 도착하였다. 사울이 나가 그를 맞았으나

When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait, (for the people were distressed,) then the people did hide themselves in caves, and in thickets, and in rocks, and in high places, and in pits.

And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.

And he tarried seven days, according to the set time that Samuel had appointed: but Samuel came not to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.

And Saul said, Bring hither a burnt offering to me, and peace offerings. And he offered the burnt offering.

And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might salute him.

사무엘은 '도대체 에게 무슨 일이오?' 하고 오히려 왕을 꾸짖었다. 그러자 사울이 이렇게 대답하였다. '내 부하들은 내 곁을 떠나고 당신은 오기로 약속한 날에 오지 않고 게다가 블레셋군은 믹마스에서 전투 태세를 갖추고 있는 것을 보고

블레셋 사람들이 나를 치려고 오는데 나는 아직도 여호와의 도움을 구하지 않았다는 생각이 들었소. 그래서 내가 당신을 더 이상 기다릴 수가 없어 하는 수없이 번제를 드리고 말았소.'

이때 사무엘이 사울에게 말하였다. '당신은 어리석은 짓을 하였소! 당신은 왕으로서 당신의 하나님 여호와의 명령에 불순종했단 말이오. 여호와께서는 당신과 당신의 자손들을 영원히 이스라엘의 왕으로 삼을 작정이었소.

그러나 이제 당신의 나라는 길지 못할 것이오. 여호와께서는 이미 자기 마음의 드는 사람을 찾아서 자기 백성을 다스릴 왕으로 세웠소. 이것은 당신이 여호와의 명령에 순종하지 않았기 때문이오.'

그리고서 사무엘은 길갈을 떠나 베냐민 땅의 기브아로 가 버리고 말았다. 사울은 남은 병력의 인원을 점검했으나 600명 정도밖에 되지 않았다.

And Samuel said, What hast thou done? And Saul said, Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that thou camest not within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered themselves together at Michmash;

Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the LORD: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering.

And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever.

But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee.

And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present with him, about six hundred men.

사울과 그의 아들 요나단과 남은 백성은 베냐민 땅의 게바에 진을 치고 블레셋 사람은 믹마스에 그대로 있었다.

블레셋군은 3개 부대의 특공대를 조직하여 블레셋 진지에서 나왔다. 한 부대는 수알 땅의 오브라로 향하였고

또 한 부대는 벧-호론으로, 나머지 한 부대는 광야 부근의 스보임 골짜기가 내려다보이는 국경 지대로 향하였다.

그 당시에는 이스라엘 땅에 철공이 하나도 없었다. 블레셋 사람들은 히브리 사람들이 칼이나 창을 만들어 가지는 것을 두렵게 여겨 히브리 사람들에게는 그런 것을 만들지 못하게 했기 때문이었다.

그래서 이스라엘 사람들은 보습이나 도끼나 괭이나 낫을 벼릴 때마다 그것을 블레셋 대장장이에게 가지고 갔는데

And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.

And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth to Ophrah, unto the land of Shual:

And another company turned the way to Bethhoron: and another company turned to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.

Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears:

But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, and his mattock.

보습이나 삽을 벼리는 값은 동전 두 개였고 도끼나 낫이나 쇠채찍을 벼리는 값은 동전 한 개였다.

그래서 그날 사울과 요나단을 제외한 이스라엘 전군인에게는 칼이나 창이 하나도 없었다.

그리고 블레셋군은 일부 병력을 투입하여 믹마스 고개를 지키도록 하였다.

Yet they had a file for the mattocks, and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, and to sharpen the goads.

So it came to pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan: but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found.

And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the passage of Michmash.
