- 하나님의 종이며 예수 그리스도의 사도인 나 바울은 같은 믿음을 가진 나의 진정한 아들 디도에게 하나님 아버지와 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 은혜와 평안이 함께 하기를 기도합니다. 나는 하나님께서 선택하신 사람들을 믿게 하고 그들에게 경건하게 사는 진리를 가르치기 위해 사도가 되었습니다. 믿음과 진리는 영원한 생명에 대한 희망에 근거하고 있습니다. 이 영원한 생명은 거짓말을 하지 않으시는 하나님이 오래 전에 약속하신 것인데 정해진 때에 전도의 말씀으로 이것을 나타내셨습니다. 나는 우리 구주이신 하나님의 명령으로 이 전도의 직무를 맡았습니다.

- 그대를 크레테섬에 남겨 둔 것은 내가 끝내지 못한 일을 그대가 정리하고 또 내가 그대에게 지시한 대로 도시마다 장로들을 임명하도록 하기 위한 것입니다.

- Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;
- In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
- But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;
- To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.
- For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:

- 장로는 책망할 것이 없고 한 아내의 남편이어야 하며 방탕하다거나 불순종한다는 비난을 받지 않는 믿는 자녀를 둔 사람이어야 합니다.
- 감독은 하나님의 일을 맡은 사람으로서 책망할 것이 없고 제 고집대로 하지 않으며 성급하게 화내지 않고 술을 좋아하지 않으며 구타하지 않고 돈을 탐내지 말아야 합니다.
- 오히려 감독은 손님을 잘 대접하고 선한 것을 좋아하며 자제하고 의롭고 거룩하며 절제할 줄 알고
- 가르침을 받은 대로 진리의 말씀을 지켜야 합니다. 그래야만 바른 교훈으로 다른 사람들을 권면하고 반대하는 사람들을 책망할 수 있을 것입니다.

- If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.
- For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;
- But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
- Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
