	열왕기상 19:1-20:21 갈멜 산상의 대승으로 우상을 타파하고 야웨 신앙을 재건할 수 있으리라 기대했던 엘리야는 오히려 이세벨이 더 혹독한 보복 행위에 나서자 심히 낙심하여 도피하였다. 실의와 비탄에 잠겨 있던 엘리야는 호렙 산에서 하나님을 만나 위로를 받고 새로운 힘과 사명을 부여받았다. 한편 아람 왕 벤하닷이 사마리아를 침공했지만, 아합군은 한 선지자의 도움으로 대승을 거두었다.

	호렙 산에서 하나님을 만남(19:1-19:21)

아합이 자기 아내 이세벨에게 엘리야가 행한 모든 일과 그가 바알의 예언자들을 죽인 사실을 말하자

그녀는 엘리야에게 이런 전갈을 보냈다. '내가 내일 이맘때까지 반드시 너를 죽여 네가 죽인 내 예언자들처럼 되게 하겠다. 내가 만일 그렇게 하지 않으면 신들이 나에게 무서운 벌을 내리기 원한다.'

그래서 엘리야는 두려워서 자기 사환을 데리고 유다의 브엘세바로 도망하였다. 그는 사환을 그 곳에 머물러 있게 하고

하루 종일 혼자 광야로 들어가 싸리나무 아래 앉아서 죽기를 바라며 '이제 더 바랄 것이 없습니다. 내 생명을 거둬 가소서. 내가 내 조상들보다 나은 것이 아무것도 없습니다.' 하였다.

그리고서 그는 그 나무 아래 누워 잠이 들었다. 갑자기 한 천사가 그를 어루만지며 '일어나 먹어라.' 하였다.

Now Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.

Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So may the gods do to me and even more, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time."

And he was afraid and arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.

But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree; and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, "It is enough; now, O LORD, take my life, for I am not better than my fathers."

He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, there was an angel touching him, and he said to him, "Arise, eat."

그래서 일어나 보니 이제 막 불에 구운 빵 하나와 물 한 병이 머리맡에 있었다. 그는 그것을 먹고 마신 다음 다시 누웠는데

여호와의 천사가 또 와서 그를 어루만지며 말하였다. '일어나서 좀더 먹어라. 네가 갈 길이 너무 멀다.'

그래서 그는 일어나 먹고 마시고 힘을 얻어 40일 동안 밤낮 걸어 하나님의 산인 시내산에 도착하였다.

엘리야는 그 곳이 있는 어느 굴에 들어가 그 날 밤을 보내게 되었다. 여호와께서 그에게 '엘리야야, 네가 여기서 무엇을 하느냐?' 하고 물으셨다.

그래서 엘리야는 이렇게 대답하였다. '전능하신 하나님 여호와여, 나는 주를 위해 열심히 일해 왔습니다. 그러나 이스라엘 백성들은 주와 맺은 계약을 어기고 주의 제단을 헐며 주의 예언자들을 모두 죽이고 살아 남은 사람은 나 하나밖에 없는데 그들은 나마저 죽이려고 합니다.'

Then he looked and behold, there was at his head a bread cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again.

The angel of the LORD came again a second time and touched him and said, "Arise, eat, because the journey is too great for you."

So he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God.

Then he came there to a cave and lodged there; and behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and He said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

He said, "I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away."

그러자 여호와께서 '너는 나와서 내 앞에 서 있거라.' 하셨다. 바로 그때 여호와께서 지나가시고 무서운 강풍이 산을 쪼개며 바위를 부수었으나 여호와는 그 가운데 계시지 않았다. 바람이 그친 후에 또 지진이 있었으나 그 지진 가운데도 여호와는 계시지 않았으며

지진 후에 불이 있었으나 그 불 속에도 여호와는 계시지 않았다. 그런데 그 불이 있은 후에 부드럽게 속삭이는 소리가 있었다.

엘리야가 이것을 듣고 자기 겉옷으로 얼굴을 가리고 굴 입구에 나가 서자 '엘리야야, 네가 여기서 무엇을 하느냐?' 라는 음성이 들려왔다.

그래서 엘리야가 대답하였다. '전능하신 하나님 여호와여, 나는 주를 위해 열심히 일해왔습니다. 그러나 이스라엘 백성들은 주와 맺은 계약을 어기고 주의 제단을 헐며 주의 예언자들을 모두 죽이고 살아 남은 자는 나 하나밖에 없는데 그들은 나마저 죽이려고 합니다.'

그때 여호와께서 말씀하셨다. '너는 오던 길로 광야를 지나 다마스커스로 가서 하사엘에게 기름을 부어 시리아 왕이 되게 하고

So He said, "Go forth and stand on the mountain before the LORD " And behold, the LORD was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.

After the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing.

When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave And behold, a voice came to him and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

Then he said, "I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away."

The LORD said to him, "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus, and when you have arrived, you shall anoint Hazael king over Aram;

님시의 아들 예후에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘의 왕이 되게 하며 아벨-므홀라 출신 사밧의 아들 엘리사에게 기름을 부어 너를 이을 예언자가 되게 하라.

하사엘의 칼을 피하는 자를 예후가 죽일 것이며 예후의 칼을 피하는 자를 엘리사가 죽일 것이다.

그러나 내가 이스라엘 사람 가운데 아직 바알에게 무릎을 꿇지 않고 그 우상에게 입을 맞추지 않은 사람 7,000명을 남겨 두었다.'

그래서 엘리야는 가서 사밧의 아들 엘리사를 만났는데 그는 열 두 겨리의 소로 밭을 갈고 있었다. 그때 엘리야가 그에게 가까이 가서 자기 겉옷을 벗어 엘리사에게 던지자

엘리사는 자기 소를 버려 두고 엘리야에게 달려가 말하였다. '먼저 가서 내 부모에게 인사나 하고 오게 해 주십시오. 그 후에 내가 당신을 따르겠습니다.' 그러자 엘리야는 '좋다. 갔다오너라. 내가 너를 말리지 않겠다.' 하고 대답하였다.

and Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place.

"It shall come about, the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall put to death.

"Yet I will leave 7,000 in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal and every mouth that has not kissed him."

So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, while he was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth. And Elijah passed over to him and threw his mantle on him.

He left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, "Please let me kiss my father and my mother, then I will follow you." And he said to him, "Go back again, for what have I done to you?"

그래서 엘리사는 돌아가서 소 두마리를 잡고 그 소의 도구로 고기를 삶아 사람들에게 나누어 주어 먹게 한 다음 엘리야를 따라가서 그의 제자가 되었다.

So he returned from following him, and took the pair of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the implements of the oxen, and gave it to the people and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah and ministered to him.

	아람과의 전쟁(20:1-20:21)

시리아의 벤-하닷왕이 그의 모든 병력을 소집하였다. 그는 마병과 전차 부대를 이끌고 온 동맹국들의 왕 32명과 함께 이스라엘의 수도 사마리아를 포위하고

성 안에 있는 아합왕에게 이런 전갈을 보냈다.

'너의 은과 금, 그리고 너의 아름다운 아내들과 가장 건장한 네 자녀들을 내놓아라.'

그래서 아합은 '좋습니다. 대왕의 말씀대로 내가 가진 모든 것을 대왕에게 드리겠습니다.' 라는 회답을 보냈다.

그러나 벤-하닷은 다시 이런 전갈을 보냈다. '나는 너에게 너의 금은과 아내들과 자녀들을 내놓으라고 명령하였다.

Now Ben-hadad king of Aram gathered all his army, and there were thirty-two kings with him, and horses and chariots And he went up and besieged Samaria and fought against it.

Then he sent messengers to the city to Ahab king of Israel and said to him, "Thus says Ben-hadad,

'Your silver and your gold are mine; your most beautiful wives and children are also mine.'"

The king of Israel replied, "It is according to your word, my lord, O king; I am yours, and all that I have."

Then the messengers returned and said, "Thus says Ben-hadad, 'Surely, I sent to you saying, "You shall give me your silver and your gold and your wives and your children,"

그러나 내일 이맘때에 내가 신하들을 보내 너의 궁전과 네 신하들의 집을 샅샅이 뒤져 그들의 마음에 드는 것은 모조리 가져오게 하겠다.'

그래서 아합은 자기 보좌관들을 불러모으고 말하였다. '너희도 알겠지만 이 사람이 우리를 못 살게 굴려고 한다. 그가 내 아내들과 자녀들, 그리고 금과 은을 요구했으나 나는 거절할 수가 없었다.'

그러자 그들이 '왕은 절대로 그 요구에 응하지 마십시오. 그에게 굴복해서는 안 됩니다.' 하고 조언하였다.

그래서 아합은 벤-하닷에게 이런 회답을 보냈다. '왕이 처음에 요구한 것은 내가 들어줄 수 있으나 두 번째 요구한 것은 응할 수가 없습니다.'

그러자 벤-하닷은 다시 이런 전갈을 보냈다. '내가 수많은 부하들을 보내 순식간에 사마리아성을 잿더미로 만들어 버리겠다. 내가 만일 그렇게 하지 않으면 신들이 나에게 무서운 벌을 내리기 원한다.'

but about this time tomorrow I will send my servants to you, and they will search your house and the houses of your servants; and whatever is desirable in your eyes, they will take in their hand and carry away.'"

Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land and said, "Please observe and see how this man is looking for trouble; for he sent to me for my wives and my children and my silver and my gold, and I did not refuse him."

All the elders and all the people said to him, "Do not listen or consent."

So he said to the messengers of Ben-hadad, "Tell my lord the king, 'All that you sent for to your servant at the first I will do, but this thing I cannot do.'" And the messengers departed and brought him word again.

Ben-hadad sent to him and said, "May the gods do so to me and more also, if the dust of Samaria will suffice for handfuls for all the people who follow me."

그래서 아합왕은 '길고 짧은 것은 대봐야 아는 법이오.' 라는 회답을 보냈다.

벤-하닷은 동맹국들의 왕들과 천막에서 술을 마시다가 이 말을 듣고 자기 부하들에게 공격 준비를 하라고 명령하였다. 그래서 그들은 성을 향하여 공격 태세를 취하였다.

바로 그때 한 예언자가 아합왕에게 가서 말하였다. '여호와께서는 왕에게 이 많은 군대가 보이느냐? 내가 오늘 이들을 네 손에 넘겨 주겠다. 그러면 너는 내가 여호와인 것을 알게 될 것이다 라고 하셨습니다.'

'누구를 통해서 그렇게 하겠소?' '여호와께서는 각 지방 장관들의 젊은 부하들을 통해 그렇게 할 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다.' '그러면 누가 먼저 공격을 개시해야 하겠소?' '그것은 왕이 해야 합니다.'

그래서 아합은 각 지방에서 젊은 병사들을 소집했는데 그들은 모두 232명이었다. 그런 다음 그는 7,000명의 다른 병력도 동원하여

Then the king of Israel replied, "Tell him, 'Let not him who girds on his armor boast like him who takes it off.'"

When Ben-hadad heard this message, as he was drinking with the kings in the temporary shelters, he said to his servants, "Station yourselves." So they stationed themselves against the city.

Now behold, a prophet approached Ahab king of Israel and said, "Thus says the LORD, 'Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I will deliver them into your hand today, and you shall know that I am the LORD.'"

Ahab said, "By whom?" So he said, "Thus says the LORD, 'By the young men of the rulers of the provinces.'" Then he said, "Who shall begin the battle?" And he answered, "You."

Then he mustered the young men of the rulers of the provinces, and there were 232; and after them he mustered all the people, even all the sons of Israel, 7,000.

그 모든 군대를 이끌고 정오에 벤-하닷을 치러 나갔다. 이때 벤-하닷과 그 32명의 왕들은 천막에서 술을 마시며 흥청거리고 있었다.

각 지방에서 뽑은 젊은 병사들이 먼저 나오자 벤-하닷의 정찰병들은 '사마리아성에서 사람들이 나옵니다.' 하고 보고하였다.

그러자 벤-하닷은 '그들이 화친하러 나오든지 싸우러 나오든지 무조건 생포하라.' 하고 명령하였다.

아합의 전 군대가 성에서 달려나가

각자 적군을 쳐죽이자 그들은 당황하여 도망하기 시작하였다. 그래서 이스라엘군은 그들을 맹렬히 추격하였는데 벤-하닷은 몇몇 마병들과 함께 말을 타고 도망하였다.

They went out at noon, while Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the temporary shelters with the thirty-two kings who helped him.

The young men of the rulers of the provinces went out first; and Ben-hadad sent out and they told him, saying, "Men have come out from Samaria."

Then he said, "If they have come out for peace, take them alive; or if they have come out for war, take them alive."

So these went out from the city, the young men of the rulers of the provinces, and the army which followed them.

They killed each his man; and the Arameans fled and Israel pursued them, and Ben-hadad king of Aram escaped on a horse with horsemen.

그 전투에서 아합왕은 수많은 말과 전차를 쳐서 빼앗고 시리아군을 무수히 죽이는 대전과를 올렸다.

The king of Israel went out and struck the horses and chariots, and killed the Arameans with a great slaughter.
