욥기

본서는 공의로운 하나님께서 불의를 방관하신 이유와 의로운 자가 고난받는 원인이 무엇인지를 밝혀 주며, 고난을 통하여 하나님을 더욱 의지해야 한다는 것을 보여 주고 있다. 특히 하나님, 인간, 창조, 사단, 죄, 의, 고난, 정의, 회개, 믿음의 개념을 성경적으로 올바르게 정리하는 데 공헌하고 있다.

본서는 서론인 1, 2장과 본론인 3:1 - 42:6, 그리고 결론인 42:7-17로 명확하게 구분되어 있으며 상호 논리적 필연성으로 연결되어 있다. 즉 서론은 문제의 발단을 기록하고 있으며, 본론은 욥이 당한 고난에 대하여 욥과 친구들의 변론 및 하나님의 메시지를 통하여 다양하게 해석하고 있고, 결론은 하나님의 은혜로 모든 것이 회복된 상황을 보여주고 있다.

	욥기 1:1-3:26 욥은 순전하고 정직하여 하나님을 경외하며 악에서 떠난 자였다. 그러나 사단의 참소로 인해 욥은 그의 모든 소유물들과 자녀들을 잃고 온몸에 악창이 생겼다. 그렇지만 욥은 하나님께 입술로 범죄하지 않았으며, 이 소식을 듣고 찾아온 친구 엘리바스, 빌닷, 소발은 욥의 상태를 보고 7일 동안 말을 걸지 못하였다. 절망한 욥은 자신의 생일을 저주하였다.

	사단의 시험(1:1-1:22)

우스 땅에 욥이라는 사람이 살고 있었다. 그는 진실하고 정직하며 하나님을 두려운 마음으로 섬기고 악을 멀리하는 사람이었다.

그에게는 일곱 아들과 세 딸이 있었으며

그의 소유는 양 7,000마리, 낙타 3,000마리, 소 1,000마리, 암나귀 500마리였다. 그리고 그는 많은 종도 거느리고 있어서 사실 동방에서 제일 가는 부자였다.

욥의 아들들은 각자 생일이 돌아오면 자기 집에 잔치를 베풀고 형제들과 누이들을 모두 초대하여 함께 먹고 마시며 즐겼다.

그 잔치가 끝날 때마다 욥은 그의 자녀들을 불러다가 그들을 성결하게 하고 아침 일찍 일어나 자녀 수대로 불에 태워 바치는 번제를 드렸다. 이것은 그가 '혹시 내 아들들이 범죄하여 마음에라도 하나님을 떠나지 않았을까?' 하고 생각했기 때문이었다.

There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; and that man was blameless, upright, fearing God and turning away from evil.

Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.

His possessions also were 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and very many servants; and that man was the greatest of all the men of the east.

His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day, and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

When the days of feasting had completed their cycle, Job would send and consecrate them, rising up early in the morning and offering burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, "Perhaps my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." Thus Job did continually.

어느 날 천사들이 여호와 앞에 나와 섰을 때 고소자인 사탄도 그들 가운데 와 있었다.

그때 여호와께서 사탄에게 물었다. '네가 어디서 왔느냐?' '땅을 두루 돌아다니다가 왔습니다.'

'네가 내 종 욥을 주의하여 보았느냐? 그처럼 진실하고 정직하며 나를 두려운 마음으로 섬기고 악을 멀리하는 사람은 세상에 없다.'

'욥이 하나님을 두려운 마음으로 섬기는 데는 어찌 이유가 없겠습니까?

주께서는 항상 그와 그 가정과 그의 재산을 보호하고 그가 하는 모든 일에 축복해 주셔서 그의 가축이 온 땅을 덮을 만큼 부자가 되게 하셨습니다.

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.

The LORD said to Satan, "From where do you come?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it."

The LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil."

Then Satan answered the LORD, "Does Job fear God for nothing?

"Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.

그러나 그가 소유한 모든 것을 한번 빼앗아 보십시오. 그러면 당장 그가 정면으로 주를 저주할 것입니다.'

'좋다. 네가 그의 소유를 네 마음대로 하여라. 그러나 그의 몸에는 손을 대지 말아라.' 그래서 사탄은 곧 여호와 앞에서 물러갔다.

하루는 욥의 자녀들이 맏형의 집에 모여 식사를 같이하며 포도주를 마시고 있었다.

이때 한 종이 욥에게 달려와서 말하였다. '우리는 소로 밭을 갈고 있었고 나귀는 주변 목초지에서 풀을 뜯어 먹고 있었습니다. 그런데

갑자기 스바 사람들이 우리를 기습하여 소와 나귀를 다 빼앗아 가고 종들을 죽였습니다. 그래서 나만 이렇게 간신히 살아나와 주인께 보고하러 왔습니다.'

"But put forth Your hand now and touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face."

Then the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him." So Satan departed from the presence of the LORD.

Now on the day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house,

a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them,

and the Sabeans attacked and took them. They also slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."

그의 말이 미처 끝나기도 전에 또 한 종이 와서 말하였다. '하나님의 불이 하늘에서 내려와 양떼와 종들을 모조리 태워 죽였습니다. 그래서 나만 이렇게 간신히 살아나와 주인께 보고하러 왔습니다.'

그의 말이 미처 끝나기도 전에 또 한 종이 와서 말하였다. '갈대아 사람들이 갑자기 우리를 기습하여 종들을 죽이고 낙타를 모조리 끌어갔습니다. 그래서 나만 이렇게 간신히 살아나와 주인께 보고하러 왔습니다.'

그의 말이 미처 끝나기도 전에 또 다른 한 종이 와서 말하였다. '주인의 자녀들이 맏아들의 집에서 식사를 같이하며 포도주를 마시고 있었는데

갑자기 사막에서 태풍이 불어와 집 네 모퉁이가 무너져내려 그들이 다 죽고 말았습니다. 그래서 나만 이렇게 간신히 살아나와 주인께 보고하러 왔습니다.'

그러자 욥은 일어나 자기 옷을 찢고 머리털을 밀고 땅에 엎드려 여호와께 경배하며

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you."

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three bands and made a raid on the camels and took them and slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house,

and behold, a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people and they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you."

Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped.

이렇게 말하였다. '내가 태어날 때 아무것도 가져온 것 없었으니 죽을 때에도 아무것도 가져가지 못하리라 주신 자도 여호와시요 가져가신 자도 여호와시니 여호와의 이름이 찬양을 받으시기 원하노라.'

이 모든 일을 당하고도 욥은 범죄하거나 하나님을 원망하지 않았다.

He said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked I shall return there The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the name of the LORD."

Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God.

	사단의 두번째 시험(2:1-2:13)

어느 날 또 여호와의 천사들이 여호와 앞에 나와 섰을 때 사탄도 그들 가운데 와 있었다.

그때 여호와께서 사탄에게 물었다. '네가 어디서 왔느냐?' '땅을 두루 돌아다니다가 왔습니다.'

'네가 내 종 욥을 주의하여 보았느냐? 그처럼 진실하고 정직하며 나를 두려운 마음으로 섬기고 악을 멀리하는 사람은 세상에 없다. 네가 나를 자극하여 아무 이유 없이 그를 해치게 하였으나 그는 여전히 진실을 간직하고 있다.'

'가죽은 가죽으로 바꾸는 법입니다. 사람이 자기 생명을 구하기 위해서는 무엇이든지 포기할 것입니다.

이제 주의 손을 펴서 그의 살과 뼈를 한번 쳐 보십시오. 그러면 당장 그가 정면으로 주를 저주할 것입니다.'

Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD.

The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it."

The LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man fearing God and turning away from evil. And he still holds fast his integrity, although you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause."

Satan answered the LORD and said, "Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life.

"However, put forth Your hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh; he will curse You to Your face."

'좋다 네가 그를 네 마음대로 하여라. 그러나 그의 생명만은 해하지 말아라.'

그래서 사탄은 여호와 앞에서 물러가 욥을 쳐서 그의 발바닥에서부터 머리 끝까지 악성 종기가 나게 하였다.

욥이 재 가운데 앉아서 기와 조각을 가져다가 자기 몸을 긁고 있는데

그의 아내가 와서 말하였다. '당신이 이래도 진실을 고수할 셈이오? 하나님이나 저주하고 죽으시오.'

그러나 욥은 이렇게 대답하였다. '당신의 말은 어리석은 여자의 말과 같소. 우리가 하나님께 복도 받았는데 재난을 당하지 말라는 법이 있겠소?' 이 모든 일을 당하고서도 욥은 입술로 하나님께 범죄하지 않았다.

So the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, he is in your power, only spare his life."

Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.

And he took a potsherd to scrape himself while he was sitting among the ashes.

Then his wife said to him, "Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die!"

But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

그때 욥의 세 친구들은 욥이 당한 모든 일을 듣고 서로 연락하여 그를 찾아보고 위로하고자 각자 자기 집에서 출발했다. 그들은 데만 사람 엘리바스와 수아 사람 빌닷과 나아마 사람 소발이었다.

그들은 멀리서 욥을 바라보고 알아 볼 수 없을 만큼 그가 변한 것을 보자 소리 높여 울며 슬픔에 못 이겨 자기들의 옷을 찢고 하늘을 향해 티끌을 날려 자기들의 머리에 뿌렸다.

그리고서 그들은 밤낮 7일을 꼬박 그와 함께 땅바닥에 앉아 있었으나 욥의 고통이 너무 큰 것을 보았기 때문에 말 한마디 하는 자가 없었다.

Now when Job's three friends heard of all this adversity that had come upon him, they came each one from his own place, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to sympathize with him and comfort him.

When they lifted up their eyes at a distance and did not recognize him, they raised their voices and wept. And each of them tore his robe and they threw dust over their heads toward the sky.

Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights with no one speaking a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.

	자기의 생일을 저주하는 욥(3:1-3:26)

드디어 욥은 침묵을 깨뜨리고 입을 열어 자기가 태어난 날을 저주하며

이렇게 외쳤다.

'내가 태어난 날이여, 저주를 받아라. 내가 임신이 되던 그 밤도 저주를 받아라.

그 날이여, 영원히 자취를 감추어 버리고 하나님의 기억에서 사라져 버려라. 빛이여, 다시는 그 위에 비치지 말아다오.

흑암아, 사망의 그늘아, 그 날을 너의 것이라고 주장하여라. 구름아, 그 위를 덮어 빛이 비치지 않게 하여라.

Afterward Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth.

And Job said,

"Let the day perish on which I was to be born, And the night which said, 'A boy is conceived.'

"May that day be darkness; Let not God above care for it, Nor light shine on it.

"Let darkness and black gloom claim it; Let a cloud settle on it; Let the blackness of the day terrify it.

그 밤이여, 짙은 어두움에 휩싸여 버리고 달력에서도 삭제되어 그 해의 달과 일수에 계산되지 말아라.

차라리 그 밤이 적적하고 기쁨의 소리가 들리지 않았더라면 더 좋을 뻔하였다.

날을 저주하는 데 익숙한 자들아, 그 밤을 저주하여라.

그 날 밤은 새벽 별도 빛을 내지 말고 기다리던 빛도 나타나지 말며 아침 동녘도 보이지 않았더라면 좋았을 걸.

나를 태어나게 하여 이처럼 큰 슬픔을 당하게 한 그 날을 저주하고 싶구나!

"As for that night, let darkness seize it; Let it not rejoice among the days of the year; Let it not come into the number of the months.

"Behold, let that night be barren; Let no joyful shout enter it.

"Let those curse it who curse the day, Who are prepared to rouse Leviathan.

"Let the stars of its twilight be darkened; Let it wait for light but have none, And let it not see the breaking dawn;

Because it did not shut the opening of my mother's womb, Or hide trouble from my eyes.

내가 어머니 뱃속에서 태어날 때 차라리 죽었더라면 좋았을 걸!

어째서 어머니가 나를 무릎에 받아 젖을 빨게 하였는가?

내가 그때 죽었더라면 지금쯤은 평안히 잠들어 쉬고 있을 텐데.

그것도 으리으리한

궁전을 짓고 살던 고대 왕들과 고관들, 그리고 금은 보화로 집을 채운 황태자들과 함께 있을 것이 아니겠는가!

"Why did I not die at birth, Come forth from the womb and expire?

"Why did the knees receive me, And why the breasts, that I should suck?

"For now I would have lain down and been quiet; I would have slept then, I would have been at rest,

With kings and with counselors of the earth, Who rebuilt ruins for themselves;

Or with princes who had gold, Who were filling their houses with silver.

내가 그때 죽었더라면 죽어서 나와 세상 빛을 보지 못한 아이처럼 땅 속에 묻혀 있을 것이 아니겠는가!

그 곳은 악한 자들이 말썽을 부리지 못하고 피곤한 자들이 쉴 수 있는 곳,

죄수들까지도 평안을 누리고 포학한 간수들의 간섭을 받지 않는 곳,

그 곳은 높고 낮은 자의 차별이 없고 종이 주인에게서 해방되는 곳이다.

어째서 고난당한 자에게 빛을 주고, 마음이 괴로운 자에게 생명을 주었는가?

"Or like a miscarriage which is discarded, I would not be, As infants that never saw light.

"There the wicked cease from raging, And there the weary are at rest.

"The prisoners are at ease together; They do not hear the voice of the taskmaster.

"The small and the great are there, And the slave is free from his master.

"Why is light given to him who suffers, And life to the bitter of soul,

이런 자들은 죽기를 기다리고 감추인 보화를 찾는 것보다 더 간절히 죽음을 찾아도 그것이 오지 않는구나!

이들은 죽어서 땅 속에 묻혀야만 행복한 사람들이 아닌가?

하나님에게 둘러싸여 앞날이 아득한 사람에게 어째서 생명이 주어졌는가?

먹기도 전에 탄식이 먼저 나오고 물같이 쏟아지는 신음 소리는 막을 길이 없구나.

내가 두려워하고 무서워하던 것이 결국 나에게 닥치고 말았으니

Who long for death, but there is none, And dig for it more than for hidden treasures,

Who rejoice greatly, And exult when they find the grave?

"Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden, And whom God has hedged in?

"For my groaning comes at the sight of my food, And my cries pour out like water.

"For what I fear comes upon me, And what I dread befalls me.

평안도 없고 안식도 없이 나에게 남은 것은 오직 고난뿐이구나!'

"I am not at ease, nor am I quiet, And I am not at rest, but turmoil comes."
