출애굽기 32:1-33:23

 모세가 시내 산에서 계명을 받는 동안 백성들은 금송아지를 만들어 숭배하는 죄를 짓고 있었다. 이러한 백성들을 본 모세는 십계명이 기록된 두 돌판을 깨뜨리고 레위인들과 함께 우상 숭배자들을 처단하였다. 이스라엘 백성들에 대해 진노하시는 하나님께 모세는 자신의 생명을 내놓고 끈질기게 중보 기도를 드렸다. 그리하여 결국 하나님과 이스라엘의 관계는 다시 회복되었다.
  
  금송아지 숭배(32:1-32:35)    
 
  1. And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
  2. And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.
  3. And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.
  4. And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
  5. And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD.
  1. 백성은 모세가 오래도록 산에서 내려오지 않자, 아론에게 몰려와 청하였다. "어서 우리를 앞장설 신을 만들어주시오. 우리를 이집트에서 데려온 그 어른 모세는 어떻게 되었는지 모르겠습니다."
  2. 아론이 그들에게 "너희 아내와 아들 딸의 귀에 걸린 금고리를 나에게 가져오라." 하고 대답하자
  3. 백성이 모두 저희 귀에 걸린 금고리를 떼어 아론에게 가져왔다.
  4. 아론이 그들의 손에서 그것을 받아 수송아지 신상을 부어 만들자 모두들 외쳤다. "이스라엘아, 이 신이 우리를 이집트에서 데려내온 우리의 신이다."
  5. 아론은 이것을 보고 그 신상 앞에 제단을 만들고 "내일 야훼 앞에서 축제를 올리자." 하고 선포하였다.
  1. And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
  2. And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:
  3. They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
  4. And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
  5. Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.
  1. 이튿날 그들은 일찍 일어나 번제를 드리고 친교제물을 바쳤다. 그리고 나서 백성은 앉아서 먹고 마시다가 일어나서 정신없이 뛰놀았다.
  2. 야훼께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. "당장 내려가 보아라. 네가 이집트에서 데려내온 너의 백성들이 고약하게 놀아나고 있다.
  3. 저들이 내가 명령한 길에서 저다지도 빨리 벗어나 저희 손으로 부어 만든 수송아지에게 예배하고 제물을 드리며 '이스라엘아, 이 신이 우리를 이집트 땅에서 데려내온 우리의 신이다.' 하고 떠드는구나!"
  4. 야훼께서 계속하여 모세에게 이르셨다. "나는 이 백성을 잘 안다. 보아라, 얼마나 고집이 센 백성이냐?
  5. 나를 말리지 마라. 내가 진노를 내려 저들을 모조리 쓸어버리리라. 그리고 너에게서 큰 백성을 일으키리라."
  1. And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?
  2. Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.
  3. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.
  4. And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.
  5. And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.
  1. 모세는 그의 하느님 야훼의 노기를 풀어드리려고 애원하였다. "야훼여, 당신께서는 그 강하신 팔을 휘두르시어 놀라운 힘으로 당신의 백성을 이집트 땅에서 데려내오시지 않으셨습니까? 그런데 어찌하여 이 백성에게 이토록 화를 내시옵니까?
  2. 어찌하여 '아하, 그가 화를 내어 그 백성을 데려내다가 산골짜기에서 죽여 없애버리고 땅에 씨도 남기지 않았구나.' 하는 말을 이집트인들에게서 들으시려 하십니까? 제발 화를 내지 마시고 당신 백성에게 내리시려던 재앙을 거두어주십시오.
  3. 당신의 명예를 걸고 '너의 후손을 하늘의 별처럼 많게 하고, 내가 약속한 이 땅을 다 너의 후손에게 주어 길이 유산으로 차지하게 하겠다.' 하고 맹세해 주셨던 당신의 종 아브라함과 이사악과 이스라엘을 기억해 주십시오."
  4. 이 말을 들으시고 야훼께서는 당신의 백성에게 내리겠다 하시던 재앙을 거두셨다.
  5. 모세는 두 증거판을 손에 들고 돌아서서 산에서 내려왔다. 그 두 판 양면에는 글이 새겨져 있었다. 이쪽에도 저쪽에도 새겨져 있었는데,
  1. And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.
  2. And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.
  3. And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.
  4. And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.
  5. And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.
  1. 그 판은 하느님께서 손수 만드신 것이었다. 그 판에 새겨진 글자도 하느님께서 손수 새기신 것이었다.
  2. 백성들이 떠드는 소리를 듣고 여호수아가 모세에게 말하였다. "진지에서 들려오는 저 소리를 들으니 전쟁이 터졌나 봅니다."
  3. 모세가 말을 받았다. "그것은 승리의 노래도 아니요, 패전의 곡성도 아니다. 나 듣기에 저것은 화답하는 노랫소리다."
  4. 모세가 진지에 가까이 이르러보니, 무리가 수송아지를 둘러싸고 춤을 추고 있었다. 모세는 격분한 나머지 손에 들었던 두 판을 산 밑에 내던져 깨뜨렸다.
  5. 그는 그들이 만든 수송아지를 끌어다가 불에 태우고 빻아서 가루를 만들어 물에 타 이스라엘 백성에게 마시게 하였다.
  1. And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them?
  2. And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief.
  3. For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
  4. And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.
  5. And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)
  1. 모세가 아론을 나무랐다. "이 백성이 당신을 어떻게 했기에, 당신은 그들이 이토록 큰 잘못을 저지르게 하였소?"
  2. 아론이 변명하였다. "우리의 영도자여, 노여워 마시게. 이 백성이 얼마나 악에 젖어 있는지 당신도 잘 알지 않는가?
  3. 그들이 나에게 와서 우리를 이집트 땅에서 데려내온 그 어른 모세가 어떻게 되었는지 모르겠다고 하면서 우리를 앞장서 인도할 신을 만들어달라고 조르더군.
  4. 그래서 내가 금을 가진 사람이 없느냐고 했더니, 금을 가진 자들이 몸에서 금을 떼어다가 주기에 그것을 불에 넣었지. 그랬더니 이 수송아지란 놈이 나오더군."
  5. 모세는 백성이 굴레 벗은 말처럼 날뛰는 것을 보았다. 아론이 백성을 멋대로 날뛰게 해서 원수들의 조롱거리가 되게 하였던 것이다.
  1. Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD's side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.
  2. And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.
  3. And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.
  4. For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves today to the LORD, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.
  5. And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the LORD; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.
  1. 모세는 진지 어귀에 서서, 야훼의 편에 설 사람은 다 나서라고 외치자 레위 후손들이 다 모여들었다.
  2. 모세가 그들에게 일렀다. "이스라엘의 하느님 야훼께서 명하신다. '모두들 허리에 칼을 차고 진지 이 문에서 저 문까지 왔다 갔다 하면서 형제든 친구든 이웃이든 닥치는 대로 찔러 죽여라.'"
  3. 레위 후손들은 모세의 명령대로 하였다. 그 날 백성 중에 맞아 죽은 자가 삼천 명 가량이나 되었다.
  4. 모세가 일렀다. "오늘 너희가 자기 아들과 동기마저 희생시켜 가며 야훼께 충성을 다하였으니, 오늘 너희 위에 복이 내릴 것이다."
  5. 이튿날 모세가 백성에게 일렀다. "너희가 이토록 잘못을 저질렀는데, 그 잘못을 용서받을 수 있을지 나 이제 야훼께 올라가 보아야겠다."
  1. And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.
  2. Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.
  3. And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.
  4. Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.
  5. And the LORD plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.
  1. 모세가 야훼께 되돌아가서 아뢰었다. "비옵니다. 이 백성이 금으로 신상을 만들어 큰 잘못을 저질렀습니다.
  2. 하지만 이제 그들의 죄를 용서해 주셔야 하겠습니다. 만일 용서해 주지 않으시려거든 당신께서 손수 쓰신 기록에서 제 이름을 지워주십시오."
  3. 야훼께서 모세에게 대답하셨다. "나에게 잘못을 저지른 자는 누구든지 그의 이름을 나의 기록에서 지워버린다.
  4. 너는 이제 곧 내가 말한 곳으로 백성을 데리고 가거라. 내 천사가 앞장서 갈 것이다. 내가 그들을 찾아가 그들의 잘못을 따질 날이 반드시 오리라."
  5. 그 뒤에 야훼께서는 백성이 아론을 시켜 수송아지를 만든 데 대한 벌을 내리셨다.
 
  모세의 중보 기도(33:1-33:23)    
 
  1. And the LORD said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it:
  2. And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:
  3. Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way.
  4. And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.
  5. For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.
  1. 야훼께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. "내가 이집트 땅에서 데려내온 이 백성을 이끌고 여기를 떠나, 내가 약속한 땅으로 올라가거라. 그 땅은 내가 아브라함과 이사악과 야곱에게 '너의 후손에게 주겠다.'고 맹세한 땅이다.
  2. 내가 천사를 보내어 너의 앞에 서게 하고 가나안족, 아모리족, 헷족, 브리즈족, 히위족, 여부스족을 쫓아내리라.
  3. 너희는 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 그 땅으로 들어가거라. 너희는 고집이 센 백성이기 때문에 동행하다가는 내가 도중에 너희를 없애버릴지도 모르니, 너희와 함께 올라가지는 않겠다."
  4. 이렇듯 가슴 아픈 말씀을 듣고 온 백성은 통곡하였다. 패물로 몸을 단장하는 사람은 하나도 없었다.
  5. 야훼께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. "이스라엘 후손들에게 전하여라. '너희 고집이 센 백성아, 내가 한 순간이라도 너희와 같이 올라가다가는 너희를 멸종시킬 것이다. 그러니 이제 너희는 모든 패물을 몸에서 떼어버려라. 그러면 내가 무엇이든지 알아서 해주리라.'"
  1. And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.
  2. And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.
  3. And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.
  4. And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moses.
  5. And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.
  1. 호렙 산을 떠난 다음, 이스라엘 백성은 몸에 패물을 두 번 다시 붙이지 않았다.
  2. 모세는 장막을 거두어가지고 진지 밖으로 나가 진지에서 멀리 떨어진 곳에 그것을 치곤 하였다. 모세는 그것을 만남의 장막이라 불렀다. 야훼께 여쭈어볼 일이 생기면 누구든지 진지 밖에 있는 만남의 장막으로 나가야 했다.
  3. 모세가 장막으로 행차할 때마다 모든 백성은 자기 천막 앞에 서서 모세가 장막으로 들어갈 때까지 그 뒤를 지켜보곤 하였다.
  4. 모세가 장막에 들어서면 구름기둥이 내려와 장막 문간에 섰고 야훼께서 모세와 말씀을 나누셨다.
  5. 구름기둥이 장막 문간에 서 있는 것을 바라보면, 모든 백성은 각기 자기 천막 문간에 일어섰다가 엎드려야 했다.
  1. And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.
  2. And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.
  3. Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.
  4. And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
  5. And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.
  1. 야훼께서는 마치 친구끼리 말을 주고 받듯이 얼굴을 마주 대시고 모세와 말씀을 나누셨다. 모세가 진지로 돌아온 뒤에도 모세의 젊은 시종인 눈의 아들 여호수아만은 장막을 떠나지 않았다.
  2. 모세가 야훼께 아뢰었다. "이제 당신께서는 저에게 이 백성을 이끌고 올라가라고 하셨습니다. 하지만 당신의 파송을 받아 저와 같이 갈 분이 누구신지 아직 가르쳐주시지 않으셨습니다. 당신께서는 저에게 '너는 잊을 수 없는 이름, 너는 내 눈에 든 사람'이라고 하셨는데,
  3. 제가 정녕 당신의 눈에 드셨다면, 저의 갈 길을 부디 가르쳐주십시오. 제가 당신을 잘 앎으로써 항상 당신 눈에 들게 해주십시오. 이 민족이 당신의 백성인 것을 기억해 주십시오."
  4. 야훼께서 대답하셨다. "내가 친히 너를 데리고 가서 너를 편하게 하리라."
  5. 모세가 야훼께 다짐하였다. "만일 당신께서 함께 가지 않으시려거든, 우리도 여기를 떠나 올라가지 않게 하십시오.
  1. For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.
  2. And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.
  3. And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
  4. And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.
  5. And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
  1. 당신께서 우리와 함께 가지 않으신다면, 저와 당신의 백성이 당신의 마음에 들었는지 어떻게 알 수 있겠습니까? 함께 가셔야만, 세상의 모든 백성보다 저와 당신의 백성을 우대하신다는 것이 증명됩니다."
  2. 야훼께서 모세의 말을 받아주셨다. "너야말로 과연 내 마음에 드는 자요, 잊을 수 없는 이름이다. 지금 네가 청한 것을 다 들어주리라."
  3. 모세가 "당신의 존엄하신 모습을 보여주십시오." 하고 간청하자
  4. 야훼께서 대답하셨다. "내 모든 선한 모습을 네 앞으로 지나가게 하며, 야훼라는 이름을 너에게 선포하리라. 나는 돌보고 싶은 자는 돌보아 주고, 가엾이 여기고 싶은 자는 가엾이 여긴다."
  5. 그리고 다시 말씀하셨다. "그러나 나의 얼굴만은 보지 못한다. 나를 보고 나서 사는 사람이 없다."
  1. And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
  2. And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:
  3. And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
  1. 야훼께서 이르셨다. "여기 내 옆에 있는 바위 위에 서 있어라.
  2. 내 존엄한 모습이 지나갈 때, 너를 이 바위굴에 집어넣고 내가 다 지나가기까지 너를 내 손바닥으로 가리리라.
  3. 내가 손바닥을 떼면, 내 얼굴은 보지 못하겠지만 내 뒷모습만은 볼 수 있으리라."
