- And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,
- Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:
- And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.
- And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.
- And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?

- 예수의 일행이 예루살렘으로 올라가는 길이었다. 그 때 예수께서 앞장서서 가셨고 그것을 본 제자들은 어리둥절하였다. 그리고 그 뒤를 따라가는 사람들은 불안에 싸여 있었다. 예수께서 다시 열두 제자를 가까이 불러 장차 당하실 일들을 일러주셨다.
- "우리는 지금 예루살렘으로 올라가는 길이다. 거기에서 사람의 아들은 대사제들과 율법학자들의 손에 넘어가 사형 선고를 받고 다시 이방인의 손에 넘어갈 것이다.
- 그러면 그들은 사람의 아들을 조롱하고 침뱉고 채찍질하고 마침내 죽일 것이다. 그러나 사람의 아들은 사흘 만에 다시 살아날 것이다."
- 제베대오의 두 아들 야고보와 요한이 예수께 가까이 와서 "선생님, 소원이 있습니다. 꼭 들어주십시오." 하고 말하였다.
- 예수께서 그들에게 "나에게 바라는 것이 무엇이냐?" 하고 물으시자

- They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.
- But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?
- And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:
- But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.
- And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John.

- 그들은 "선생님께서 영광의 자리에 앉으실 때 저희를 하나는 선생님의 오른편에 하나는 왼편에 앉게 해주십시오." 하고 부탁하였다.
- 그래서 예수께서는 "너희가 청하는 것이 무엇인지나 알고 있느냐? 내가 마시게 될 잔을 마실 수 있으며 내가 받을 고난의 세례를 받을 수 있단 말이냐?" 하고 물으셨다.
- 그들이 "예, 할 수 있습니다." 하고 대답하자 예수께서 다시 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "너희도 내가 마실 잔을 마시고 내가 받을 고난의 세례를 받기는 할 것이다.
- 그러나 내 오른편이나 왼편 자리에 앉는 특권은 내가 주는 것이 아니다. 그 자리에 앉을 사람들은 하느님께서 미리 정해 놓으셨다."
- 이 대화를 듣고 있던 다른 열 제자가 야고보와 요한을 보고 화를 냈다.

- But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.
- But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:
- And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.
- For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

- 그래서 예수께서는 그들을 가까이 불러놓고 "너희도 알다시피 이방인들의 통치자로 자처하는 사람들은 백성을 강제로 지배하고 또 높은 사람들은 백성을 권력으로 내리누른다.
- 그러나 너희는 그래서는 안 된다. 너희 사이에서 누구든지 높은 사람이 되고자 하는 사람은 남을 섬기는 사람이 되어야 하고
- 으뜸이 되고자 하는 사람은 모든 사람의 종이 되어야 한다.
- 사람의 아들도 섬김을 받으러 온 것이 아니라 섬기러 왔고, 또 많은 사람들을 위하여 목숨을 바쳐 몸값을 치르러 온 것이다." 하셨다.
