- And he put forth a parable to those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them.
- When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him;
- And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room.
- But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee.
- For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

- 그리고 예수께서는 손님들이 저마다 윗자리를 차지하려는 것을 보시고 그들에게 비유 하나를 들어 말씀하셨다.
- "누가 혼인 잔치에 초대하거든 윗자리에 가서 앉지 마라. 혹시 너보다 더 높은 사람이 또 초대를 받았을 경우
- 너와 그 사람을 초대한 주인이 와서 너에게 '이분에게 자리를 내어드리게.' 할지도 모른다. 그렇게 되면 무안하게도 맨 끝자리로 내려 앉아야 할 것이다.
- 너는 초대를 받거든 오히려 맨 끝자리에 가서 앉아라. 그러면 너를 초대한 사람이 와서 '여보게, 저 윗자리로 올라 앉게' 하고 말할 것이다. 그러면 다른 모든 손님들의 눈에 너는 영예롭게 보일 것이다.
- 누구든지 자기를 높이는 사람은 낮아지고 자기를 낮추는 사람은 높아질 것이다."

- Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.
- But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind:
- And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
- And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.
- Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many:

- 예수께서 당신을 초대한 사람에게 말씀하셨다. "너는 점심이나 저녁을 차려놓고 사람들을 초대할 때에 친구나 형제나 친척이나 잘사는 이웃 사람들을 부르지 마라. 그렇게 하면 너도 그들의 초대를 받아서 네가 베풀어준 것을 도로 받게 될 것이다.
- 그러므로 너는 잔치를 베풀 때에 오히려 가난한 사람, 불구자, 절름발이, 소경 같은 사람들을 불러라.
- 그러면 너는 행복하다. 그들은 갚지 못할 터이지만 의인들이 부활할 때에 하느님께서 대신 갚아주실 것이다."
- 같이 앉았던 사람 중의 한 사람이 이 말씀을 듣고 "하느님 나라에서 잔치 자리에 앉을 사람은 참으로 행복하겠습니다." 하고 말하자
- 예수께서 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "어떤 사람이 큰 잔치를 준비하고 많은 사람들을 초대하였다.

- And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.
- And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.
- And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused.
- And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
- So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind.

- 잔치 시간이 되자 초대받은 사람들에게 자기 종을 보내어 준비가 다 되었으니 어서 오라고 전하였다.
- 그러나 초대받은 사람들은 한결같이 못 간다는 핑계를 대었다. 첫째 사람은 '내가 밭을 샀으니 거기 가봐야 하겠소. 미안하오.' 하였고
- 둘째 사람은 '나는 겨릿소 다섯 쌍을 샀는데 그것들을 부려보러 가는 길이오. 미안하오.' 하였으며
- 또 한 사람은 '내가 지금 막 장가들었는데 어떻게 갈 수가 있겠소?' 하고 말하였다.
- 심부름 갔던 종이 돌아와서 주인에게 그대로 전하였다. 집주인은 대단히 노하여 그 종더러 '어서 동네로 가서 한길과 골목을 다니며 가난한 사람, 불구자, 소경, 절름발이들을 이리로 데려오너라.' 하고 명령하였다.

- And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
- And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.
- For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.

- 얼마 뒤에 종이 돌아와서 '주인님, 분부하신 대로 다 했습니다. 그러나 아직도 자리가 남았습니다.' 하고 말하니
- 주인은 다시 종에게 이렇게 일렀다. '그러면 어서 나가서 길거리나 울타리 곁에 서 있는 사람들을 억지로라도 데려다가 내 집을 채우도록 하여라.
- 잘 들어라. 처음에 초대받았던 사람들 중에는 내 잔치에 참여할 사람이 하나도 없을 것이다.'"
