- These are the words of the covenant, which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, beside the covenant which he made with them in Horeb.
- And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them, Ye have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land;
- The great temptations which thine eyes have seen, the signs, and those great miracles:
- Yet the LORD hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.
- And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot.

- 모세는 온 이스라엘을 불러모으고 말하였다. "야훼께서는 이집트 땅에서, 너희가 지켜보는 가운데, 파라오와 그의 신하들과 온 나라를 해치우셨다. 너희는 그것을 다 보았다.
- 그들을 괴롭히시며 굉장한 표적과 기적을 행하시는 것을 너희는 목격하였다.
- 그러나 야훼께서는 이날까지 너희에게 깨닫는 마음, 보는 눈, 듣는 귀를 주지 않으셨다.
- 그래서 나는 사십 년 동안이나 광야에서 너희를 이끌고 다녀야 했다. 그러나 너희가 걸친 옷은 해어지지 않았고 발에 신은 신발은 닳아지지 않았다.
- 너희는 남이 먹는 양식을 먹지 못하고 포도주나 술을 마시지 않고도 살 수 있었다. 그렇게 한 것은 야훼께서 너희 하느님이신 줄 깨우쳐주려는 것이었다.

- Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink: that ye might know that I am the LORD your God.
- And when ye came unto this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out against us unto battle, and we smote them:
- And we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half tribe of Manasseh.
- Keep therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that ye may prosper in all that ye do.
- Ye stand this day all of you before the LORD your God; your captains of your tribes, your elders, and your officers, with all the men of Israel,

- 너희가 이 곳에 이르렀을 때에 헤스본 왕 시혼과 바산 왕 옥이 나와서 우리를 맞아 싸웠지만, 우리는 그들을 쳐부술 수 있었다.
- 우리는 그들의 땅을 점령하고 그 땅을 르우벤과 가드와 므나쎄 지파 반에게 유산으로 떼어주었다.
- 그러니 너희는 이 계약의 조문들을 지켜 그대로 실천하여라. 그래야 너희가 하는 모든 일이 뜻대로 될 것이다.
- 너희는 지금 야훼 너희 하느님 앞에 서 있다. 너희 각 지파의 어른들과 장로들과 관리들을 비롯하여 온 이스라엘 사람,
- 너희의 어린이들이나 부녀자들, 장작을 패주는 사람뿐 아니라 물을 길어주는 사람, 너희의 진지 안에 몸붙여 사는 떠돌이까지도

- Your little ones, your wives, and thy stranger that is in thy camp, from the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water:
- That thou shouldest enter into covenant with the LORD thy God, and into his oath, which the LORD thy God maketh with thee this day:
- That he may establish thee to day for a people unto himself, and that he may be unto thee a God, as he hath said unto thee, and as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
- Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath;
- But with him that standeth here with us this day before the LORD our God, and also with him that is not here with us this day:

- 오늘로서 너희 하느님 야훼와 계약을 맺고 그 벌칙까지도 지켜야 하는 사이가 된다.
- 야훼께서는 오늘 너희를 세우시어 당신의 백성으로 삼으시고 몸소 너희 하느님이 되어주시려는 것이다. 너희에게도 약속해 주셨지만, 너희 선조 아브라함과 이사악과 야곱에게 하신 맹세를 이렇게 지켜주시는 것이다.
- 이렇게 내가 벌칙을 붙여서 맺는 이 계약은 너희하고만 맺는 것이 아니다.
- 오늘 여기에 우리와 함께 우리 하느님 야훼 앞에 서 있는 사람들뿐 아니라, 오늘 여기에 우리와 함께 있지 않은 사람과도 맺는 것이다.
- 그렇다. 너희는 우리가 이집트 땅에서 어떻게 살았는지 안다. 또 그간 여러 민족들 사이를 우리가 어떻게 지나왔는지도 너희는 안다.

- (For ye know how we have dwelt in the land of Egypt; and how we came through the nations which ye passed by;
- And ye have seen their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were among them:)
- Lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood;
- And it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart, to add drunkenness to thirst:
- The LORD will not spare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven.

- 그들이 나무와 돌과 은과 금으로 구역질나는 우상들을 만들어 모시고 있는 것을 너희는 보았다.
- 오늘, 우리 하느님 야훼에게서 마음이 떠나 그 민족들의 신들을 따라가 섬기려는 자가 행여나 너희 가운데 없도록 해야 한다. 그 어떤 남자도 여자도, 문중도 지파도 그런 일이 없도록 해야 한다. 행여나 너희 가운데 그런 소태같이 쓴 열매를 맺는 뿌리가 있어서는 안 된다.
- 그런 자는 이 벌칙 조항들을 듣고서도 제 잘난 줄만 알고, '물이 콸콸 솟는 동산이든지 메마른 사막이든지 내 멋대로 마구 뒤엎어버려도 나에게는 아무 일 없으리라.' 하겠지만,
- 야훼께서는 그런 자를 용서하지 않으신다. 야훼께서는 그에게 당신의 분노와 질투를 터뜨리시어 이 책에 벌칙으로 기록되어 있는 모든 저주를 내려 덮치게 하실 것이다. 그리하여 야훼께서는 그의 이름을 하늘 아래에서 지워버리고 마시리라.
- 야훼께서는 그런 자를 이스라엘 모든 지파들 가운데서 갈라 세우시고 이 법전에 기록되어 있는 계약에 딸린 모든 벌칙대로 재앙을 내리실 것이다.

- And the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this book of the law:
- So that the generation to come of your children that shall rise up after you, and the stranger that shall come from a far land, shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses which the LORD hath laid upon it;
- And that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom, and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath:
- Even all nations shall say, Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this land? what meaneth the heat of this great anger?
- Then men shall say, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt:

- 너희 뒤를 이어 일어날 다음 세대의 자손들이나 먼 나라에서 온 외국인들이 야훼께서 이 땅에 내리신 재앙과 퍼뜨리신 병을 보고 물을 것이다.
- 야훼께서 화를 내시어 뒤엎으신 소돔과 고모라와 아드마와 스보임같이, 유황과 소금으로 다 태워버려 이 땅에 씨를 뿌릴 엄두도 나지 않게, 움이 틀 가망도 없게, 그리고 풀포기 하나 자랄 수 없도록 뒤엎으신 것을 보고
- 모든 민족들은 물을 것이다. '어찌하여 야훼께서 이 땅에 이런 일을 하셨을까? 이토록 혹심한 분노를 터뜨리셨을까?'
- 그러면 이렇게들 말할 것이다. '이 백성은 이집트 땅에서 구출되어 나올 때에 저희 선조의 하느님과 맺은 계약을 저버렸다가 이 모양이 되었단다.
- 듣지도 보지도 못하던 신들, 야훼께서 섬기지 말라고 하신 신들을 따라가 그들을 섬기며 절했지.

- For they went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods whom they knew not, and whom he had not given unto them:
- And the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this book:
- And the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger, and in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.
- The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

- 그러니 야훼의 분노가 이 땅에 터질 수밖에. 그래서 이 책에 기록된 모든 저주를 그 위에 내리셨던 것이다.
- 야훼께서 너무 노엽고 화가 나고 분하셔서 그들을 저희 땅에서 송두리째 뽑아다가 오늘날 저렇게 다른 나라에 쫓아버리신 것이다.'
- 숨겨진 것은 우리 하느님 야훼께서나 아실 일이다. 우리와 우리 자손들이 언제까지나 할 일은 이미 드러난 일이다. 그러니 우리는 이 법에 있는 모든 말씀대로 실천할 뿐이다.
