- In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
- The same was in the beginning with God.
- All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
- In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
- And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

- 한처음, 천지가 창조되기 전부터 말씀이 계셨다. 말씀은 하느님과 함께 계셨고 하느님과 똑같은 분이셨다.
- 말씀은 한처음 천지가 창조되기 전부터 하느님과 함께 계셨다.
- 모든 것은 말씀을 통하여 생겨났고 이 말씀 없이 생겨난 것은 하나도 없다. 생겨난 모든 것이
- 그에게서 생명을 얻었으며 그 생명은 사람들의 빛이었다.
- 그 빛이 어둠 속에서 비치고 있다. 그러나 어둠이 빛을 이겨본 적이 없다.

- There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
- The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
- He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
- That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
- He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

- 하느님께서 보내신 사람이 있었는데 그의 이름은 요한이었다.
- 그는 그 빛을 증언하러 왔다. 모든 사람으로 하여금 자기 증언을 듣고 믿게 하려고 온 것이다.
- 그는 빛이 아니라 다만 그 빛을 증언하러 왔을 따름이다.
- 말씀이 곧 참 빛이었다. 그 빛이 이 세상에 와서 모든 사람을 비추고 있었다.
- 말씀이 세상에 계셨고 세상이 이 말씀을 통하여 생겨났는데도 세상은 그분을 알아보지 못하였다.

- He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
- But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
- Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
- And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
- John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

- 그분이 자기 나라에 오셨지만 백성들은 그분을 맞아주지 않았다.
- 그러나 그분을 맞아들이고 믿는 사람들에게는 하느님의 자녀가 되는 특권을 주셨다.
- 그들은 혈육으로나 육정으로나 사람의 욕망으로 난 것이 아니라 하느님에게서 난 것이다.
- 말씀이 사람이 되셔서 우리와 함께 계셨는데 우리는 그분의 영광을 보았다. 그것은 외아들이 아버지에게서 받은 영광이었다. 그분에게는 은총과 진리가 충만하였다.
- 요한은 그분을 증언하여 외치기를 "그분은 내 뒤에 오시지만 사실은 내가 나기 전부터 계셨기 때문에, 나보다 앞서신 분이라고 말한 것은 바로 이분을 두고 한 말이다." 하였다.

- And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.
- For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
- No man hath seen God at any time, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
- And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?
- And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

- 우리는 모두 그분에게서 넘치는 은총을 받고 또 받았다.
- 모세에게서는 율법을 받았지만 예수 그리스도에게서는 은총과 진리를 받았다.
- 일찍이 하느님을 본 사람은 없다. 그런데 아버지의 품 안에 계신 외아들로서 하느님과 똑같으신 그분이 하느님을 알려주셨다.
- 유다인들이 예루살렘에서 대사제들과 레위 지파 사람들을 요한에게 보내어 그가 누구인지 알아보게 하였다. 이 때 요한은 이렇게 증언하였다.
- "나는 그리스도가 아니오." 그는 조금도 숨기지 않고 분명히 말해 주었다.

- And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
- Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?
- He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.
- And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.
- And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

- 그들이 "그러면 누구란 말이오? 엘리야요?" 하고 다시 묻자 요한은 또 아니라고 대답하였다. "그러면 우리가 기다리던 그 예언자요?" 그들이 다시 물었을 때 요한은 그도 아니라고 하였다.
- "우리를 보낸 사람들에게 대답해 줄 말이 있어야 하겠으니 당신이 누군지 좀 알려주시오. 당신은 자신을 누구라고 생각하고 있소?" 이렇게 다그쳐 묻자
- 요한은 그제야 "나는 예언자 이사야의 말대로 '주님의 길을 곧게 하여라.' 하며 광야에서 외치는 이의 소리요." 하고 대답하였다.
- 그들은 바리사이파에서 보낸 사람들이었다.
- 그들은 또 요한에게 "당신이 그리스도도 아니요 엘리야도 아니요 그 예언자도 아니라면 어찌하여 세례를 베푸는 거요?" 하고 물었다.

- John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;
- He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.
- These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

- 요한은 이렇게 대답하였다. "나는 다만 물로 세례를 베풀 따름이오. 그런데 당신들이 알지 못하는 사람 한 분이 당신들 가운데 서 계십니다.
- 이분은 내 뒤에 오시는 분이지만 나는 이분의 신발 끈을 풀어드릴 만한 자격조차 없는 몸이오."
- 이것은 요한이 세례를 베풀던 요르단 강 건너편 베다니아에서 일어난 일이었다.
